Phnom Penh - Six villagers died one after another after entering a well filled with diesel fumes in east-central Cambodia, national media reported Tuesday.
The villagers had decided to use a diesel pump rather than buckets for the annual task of removing contaminated water from the well, the Cambodia Daily newspaper said.
Commune chief Men Sarun was quoted as saying the first man climbed into the well and installed the diesel pump above the waterline, about 2 metres below the top of the 9-metre-deep well. However, he succumbed to the fumes shortly after starting the motor, Men Sarun said.
Another two men then climbed into the well and managed to stop the engine but died too. As the others descended one after another to investigate, they were also overcome, the commune chief said.
The last to die managed to call out a warning before falling unconscious. His action prevented a seventh villager from going into the well.
'Due to these deaths caused by the old well, many villagers who currently use water from the well will never use it again,' Men Sarun told the newspaper.
The incident happened in Kampong Cham province, east of Phnom Penh. Cambodia has limited infrastructure, particularly in rural areas, where the majority of its people live, and many Cambodians source water from wells and rivers.

Their poor decision....so let them be!
lesson to be learned. sounds like they all suffocated from lack of oxygen due probably to carbon monoxide gas poisoning which can kill in only a few minutes. never use diesel engine in a confined space like in a deep well, etc... the exhaust hume is very toxic, really! this is probably lack of education as people in rural area don't really understand the danger of carbon monoxide gas poisoning.
May all six Rest In Peace.
Our country is undeveloped and our people do what they can, making improvise solutions that are dangerous sometimes.
Many practices are dangerous and can be stop with government awareness program. For example, pesticide avoidance, chemical fertilizer problems, and better farming practices such as programs that are enacted by our neighbor Vietnam for their citizens can also benefit our people when our government put effort to improve the agriculture practice.
I been to Vietnam several times, i observed they have practices of sending delegates to study the latest farming practices who become responsible for passing on to their hamlets.
Cambodia new more of this model. Anything good from different nations we must adapt, anything bad we must ignore.

People needed to be educated about how dangerous the carbon monoxide. One carbon one oxygen molecule and that is deadly in a confind place. That come out from the cars, anything that burn a fire, a fuel. It is the by products of combustion.

People die due to carbon monoxide poisining all the time in the US, especially during cold winter months. So stop picking on Cambodians as being uneducated.
People died in the US are those people who just immigrated to the US and they don't know how dangerous the carbon monoxide.
Not just fume from the diesel or gas engine that can kill you, folks. If you dig the ground or trench for your personal use, make sure you don't jump into that trench. You might die from underground gas too. It happens to maintenance workers in the US. They workded in trench and got kill by the gas from underground.
So be careful.
Don't operate your generator inside enclosed area. Leave it outside or open your garage door if you operate inside the garage.
Sorry to heard the tragic story like this one in Cambodia.
no one is picking on Cambodia for being uneducated. People need to be informed reguardless of where they are from or their level of education about the dangers of carbon monoxide. Try not to be so defensive. People are trying to help.

2:29 PM,
Fuck you too! You thug....!
2:29 PM,
Regardless as to whether or not the developes, unless people are total dumb to make such decision otherwise! That is why, Cambodians are moving back to stoneage!
i know, in the usa, there are signs to warn and educate people everywhere, e.g. not to dig the ground in some area as they can get hurt or damage underground cable, etc, etc... so it is good for everybody, even in cambodia, whether in the cities or in rural areas to beware and be careful. the more we are educated the better we can avoid unnecessary injury or harm, or even death and so on, really! look, listen and learn, and don't be so defensive when someone is trying to educate and help those who are less fortunate due to lack of opportunity, etc, etc. people who try to make a difference are not personal with you or anybody, they are only trying to help people see, learn and understand the danger, really! please wake up.
we don't look down on ignorant individuals, we see they are just lack of education and wanted to help pass the education to everyone in the rural area and everywhere in cambodia, that's all.
