Response to an irate anonymous reader

Wednesday, March 03, 2010

In regards to a post of an article on "toxic makeup and natural look" from the Phnom Penh Post, an anonymous KI-Media reader posted:
You people are f___ing so stupid. It's unbelievable. He [Hun Xen] specifically said that he only "appeal" not "order" that Khmer women should stick to their natural look. He even said that things like hair coloring and sh_t like that is fine with him. It's the nose job and plastic surgery thing that he is appealing for Khmer women to not be crazy about it.

KI, you are a group of manipulative a__holes. You guys are opportunists that take things out of context and twist it into something you can use to serve your agenda. No wonder the Khmer government wants to shut you down. I was supportive of your site because I saw it as a constructive criticism but stunt like this has been happening repeatedly to the point that you guys lose any support I have left.

You are no critical opposition. You are manipulative political opportunist. Put that on your banner if you want to be true to yourselves and your readers.

2:37 AM
Dear Sir/Madam,

We would like to thank you for your comment and we welcome your explicitly constructive criticism. However, with all due respect and as we indicated in our posting, the article (minus the photo) was written by reporters Cheang Sokha and Mom Kunthear from The Phnom Penh Post. We did not alter any words from the original article which clearly states that Mr. Hun Xen ‘ordered the Ministry of Health to strictly monitor the use of toxic chemicals in cosmetics and urged Khmer women to project their “natural beauty”’. In spite of our limited knowledge of English, we did not read in the article any statement supporting your claim that Mr. Hun Xen issued any “order” for Khmer women to stick to their natural look. Nevertheless, we stand to be corrected should we miss the claim you made.

The original article can be found here:

http://www.phnompenhpost.com/index.php/2010030333011/National-news/hun-sen-warns-of-toxic-makeup-urges-emphasis-on-natural-look.html

Furthermore, should you believe that the Phnom Penh Post article strayed from your personal understanding of the true fact, you can write a letter to its editors at the following e-mail addresses:
  • Michael Hayes, Senior Editor, michael.hayes@phnompenhpost.com
  • Seth Meixner, Editor in Chief, sd_meixner@yahoo.com
  • Philip Bader, Managing Editor, Philip.bader@phnompenhpost.com
  • Kay Kimsong, Editor in Chief Post Khmer, kimsong.kay@phnompenhpost.com
  • Neth Pheaktra, Managing Editor Post Khmer, pheaktra.neth@phnompenhpost.com
As for the autocratic regime in Phnom Penh wanting to shut us down, this is beyond our control and there is nothing much we can do. However, to be honest, sites like KI-Media are “dime a dozen”, re-starting our work merely requires signing up another new free account.

Finally, regarding political manipulation, we have to admit that, even if we are, we would merely be "childish amateurs" when compared to the well-oiled, well-heeled and well-funded machinery on display in Phnom Penh. Surely, we wouldn't be able to afford a “prestigious” crew such as the “Press and Quick Response Unit” set up the Council of Ministers, nor can we afford to pay mouthpieces like the “illustrious” Messrs. Phay Siphan, Khieu Kanharith, et al. More importantly, we surely wouldn't be able to sue anybody and everybody with "defamation and disinformation" after grabbing away their land, would we? Therefore, to credit us with “political manipulation” is to give us more credit than we actually deserve.

We remain grateful of your past support of KI-Media.

Yours truly,

KI-Media team

KI,
THIS READER COMMENTS JUST OVER REACTED. HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE PROPER AND SINCERE.

ALSO YOU HAVE DONE A GOOD JOB ON THIS QUICK REPLY. SOMETIME SOME OPINION IS BEST TO IGNOR. IT IS IMPOSIBLE TO ACCOMODATE EVERYONE AS THEY PLEASED.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! THERE ARE 999,999,999 OTHER READERS SUPPORTING YOU (MINUS THIS PERSON).

in fact, that's not hun sen job. i've never heard any leaders in the world care about their peoples personal affairs.oh cambodians you're very very bad luck to have this kind of shit person to run your country.

I am not 2:37 but I believe his comments was directed at the posters whom replied to the article. The whole situation is very hilarious, I could not stop laughing. Our PM made a one gesture that I can finally agree with him but then the posters turn it into a comedy. Oh my gosh, it was funny as hell. I know that Hun Sen only meant to direct this toward cosmetic surgeries but not at the dermatologic make-ups. But damn, that wife of his have some serious layers of make-up.

2:37AM

Lost one supporter to Ki-Media is not a big deal. We still have million of Ki-Media supporters out there like myself.

I read Ki-Media 10 times aday to find the article about Hun Shit or Hun Kwak's bad behavior. I'm ready to attack Hun Sen at any course. He deserved to be shit on his head and his families. He deserved to be hung from the tree. I'm telling you "If Hun Sen happens to be in Palestine or Middle East, he won't last this long". People over there will bomb him in second.

You, 2:37AM, should defect to CPP as you wish. I won't defect to CPP (Corrupted Power Party) as some of my countrymen from abroad. I'm not selling myself to hurt Cambodia and her country to serve the Vietnam's interest. If one works for Hun Sen, one also works for Vietnam. I'm talking about people from abroad and inside the country.

Get lost, dude and don't read Ki-Media anymore. We don't welcome you in this forum.

Kiss my ass. Ah Hun Sen can only shut down the media outlets in Cambodia, not outside Cambodia.

He has no authority to shut down our freedom of speech, First amendment.

Get lost Ah Hun Zen and your supporters.

In a free country, everyone has the rights to do anything to themselves, including cosmetic surgery. Hun Sen can voice his opinions, but not order. In Cambodia, Hun Sen's "opinions" have always become his orders. If no one follow his "opinions" and "advices", he or she will be in trouble.

One man, one state, one party with an absolute power. This is a characteristic of a dictatorship. Hun Sen orders this; Hun Sen orders that. It seems the whole would stifles without Hun Sen's orders. Why? Because nobody dares to do anything without this man's permission. This is no different than Pol Pot in terms of leadership. This is all about a country run by tyranny. It's so sad indeed for the Khmer people.

KI should not worry about responding to that irate reader. Just keep up with your good works. The majority of us support you. Thanks.

K-I should also practice professionalism by being mature news people, meaning stop writing Hun Xen, Heng Xamrin or Xoc An etc. Please write as you would any other Khmer names. Hun Sen, Heng Samrin, Sok An, etc. Regardless of your disagreement in any and all political issues, please be mature and professional. Write your criticism in a professional way. Next round of election my vote still go to Sam Rainsy. All Khmers must unite, regardless. Or I'll kick all asses - meaner than Pol Pot. Thank you.

KI Media,

You have done a great job already.

You have lots of readers who really appreciate all the works you have done to bring them news.

You force nobody to read your posted news and everyone should be smart enough to think independently and verify the fact.

Keep up the wonderful works you have done.

Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for the news you have postd on your site.

One thing I love about KI media is that the information regularly updated and we can find huge amount of good information. I am a neurtal one normally. At the sametime that KI media is good, I often see some dirty phrase or words is not professional at all, more importantantly it does not represent the real Khmer that many claimed to be the best and beautiful culture. The other thing is that in KI media, I rarely see that KI media posted thing which is good about the government in which it is true the despite what the goverment doest badly, there still be many other thing good about that should be publicized/posted.

Very well responsed KI! I would suggest that you do not waste your time with this individual. He/she is not different from Hun Sen, especially the whole CPP members. They are always right. You cannot prove them wrong.

LOL when I saw the acticle about Hun Sen put his nose in the 'cosmetics' thing. It reminds me that I used to hear Sihanouk was the father of everything. Now, Hun Sen is similar to Sihanouk. He put his nose on everything. Are Cambodians living in a democratic country?

Please just stop blaming my God father Hun Sen, I will be happy. Why I pray for leadership because he got only one eye but he can see the dollars clearer than other 2 eyes people. That is why he can stay in power much longer and I can share from him US$1200 per month plus young girl.

KI,

If you brand yourselves as "childish amateurs," does that mean you don't want to be taken seriously or are you just playing dumb with things like "In spite of our limited knowledge of English..." You have not read any article supporting my claim? Well, you understand Khmer. I saw Hun Sen's speech and it was "appealing" not "ordering."

Unless you just want to stick to your playing dumb, you should next time verify your news article before posting them. But if knowing act dumb and post things that only serve your purpose is what you like to do, that is fine with me too. It just gives you a bad reputation and the issue of you manipulating things will reoccur again and again.

I understand that you only post things that serve your purpose and that is totally cool because you have that right. I haven't seen any positive news about Hun Sen's government that I found elsewhere posted on here. You guys have an agenda and that is cool. Yes, the CPP have more money and larger influence on broadcasting their agenda. That I am with you. I don't hate critics of Hun Sen blindly like some people but you got to be objective rather than subjective. Be a critic of Hun Sen for the right reason not just personal attack. The line there is thin between objectivity and subjectivity of things like criticism. You can make the call yourself.

I want you guys around but at the same time I hate it when I come to your site and I see smart-ass add-on to the article of the news. If you want to voice your opinion so much, why don't you stop these silly article title add-on and just write a commentary instead. That way it is clearer. You get what I'm saying? Don't be so ambiguous. You know what you are. Be that openly and stop acting dumb.

Mr. Hun Sen is the young Khmer generation's protector of not allow a potential poisonous women make-up transmiting to the Khmer osprings(Khmer childrend).
You're comment is rigt, only the cosmetics industries are not quite happy about your comment. Dear KI-MEDIA team do not worry to lose that reader, as long as Khmer in and out side are happy though, the KI media is still popular.

I can see to many of your points, as another reader of KI however, I disagree bit. I personally like the provocative add-ons. Because KI repost so many articles so rapidly, I only have time to read articles that I may find interesting through the headline.

These headlines provoke me to dissect the news further by reading the full article. It is unfortunate however that there are many readers who do not do their own readings for themselves. Many rely solely on the provocative titles which purpose are to highlight the absurdity, not to give you a whole reflection on the article.

Those that depend on others to summarize the readings for them tend to be very irate, offensive, and far violent in their conclusions then people who take the time to do critical reading.

Of course, I am not saying that you are one of those people, obviously your points and argument showed that you are one of those people who actually read the entire article before posting like others, whether it be on this topic or another. There are always people who post virulently, perhaps probably based solely on the title to the articles alone.

Anonymous said...

11:43 AM,
Very reasonable comment. However, I don't think when the KI adds additional title to the article will cause a misunderstanding to the article. Usually, those articles posted by the KI were available somewhere else a few hours or a half day already. Most readers knew the article already. Also, I believe the majority of readers who are living outside the country or who are not side with any party will not mind about this. Except those who side with the CPP and praise for the CPP, they feel a bit of disturb about this.

So, what is a big deal with this? KI only add a flavor to the title, but they never change or twist the story. On the other hand, I saw many cases of the CPP actions that they twisted the fact and made the right thing become wrong.

The "angree reader" is a typical CPP mouthpiece in the mold of Phay Siphan, Khiu Khannarith, Om Yitieng (pardon the spelling). They come from the same school of debate club. Be little your opponents as much as possible.

As for KI anecdotol title, I though its pretty clever.

KI Media,

You partly have yourself to blame as well. In the past, you had strayed into the innuendo territory on the border line of mislead and misdirect the readers. Many readers were alarmed with your own titles/headlines and augmented comments to and in the original articles. They let you know on many occasions. Incorrect and poor translation is another issue to be noted for you. So you or anybody CAN NOT really blame this particular irated individual for his outburst.
