PHNOM PENH (AFP) - Cambodian premier Hun Sen on Monday said the head of Southeast Asia's regional body was unsuitable for the job, accusing him of "crazy work" for reportedly questioning a recent rocket drill.
Hun Sen was responding to comments printed in local newspapers attributed to Surin Pitsuwan, the secretary-general of the 10-member Association of Southeast Nations (ASEAN) and a citizen of Thailand, with which Cambodia has tense relations.
"I think that his excellency Surin Pitsuwan is not suitable as ASEAN secretary general," Hun Said said during a speech on national radio, adding: "if you are stupid, don't do it".
Cambodian newspapers carried reports by Malaysia's Bernama news agency quoting Surin as saying that
"Cambodia might have signaled as though the region was unstable" by firing rockets last week during a border dispute with Thailand.
But Hun Sen said Cambodian troops were merely testing equipment when they fired some 200 rockets last Thursday at an airfield 180 kilometres (about 110 miles) from the Thai border.
His speech to disabled Cambodian military veterans in southern Kampot province went on to accuse Surin of "crazy work" interfering in Cambodian affairs.
The premier pointed out that leaders of other Southeast Asian countries, including Thailand, showed no concerns about the test, and called for Surin to retract his statement or face a confrontation when leaders meet next month in Hanoi.
"If he doesn't make a correction I will attack this secretary general during the ASEAN meeting," Hun Sen said.
Addressing Surin directly in the speech, he added: "You must make a correction... The rockets did not hit your head."
Hun Sen has recently made a number of fiery speeches railing against Thai "invaders" and "thieves" in disputed territory around an 11th century temple on their border, where there have been deadly clashes in the past two years.
Cambodia and Thailand have been locked in nationalist tensions and a troop standoff at their disputed border since July 2008, when Cambodia's Preah Vihear temple was granted UNESCO World Heritage status.
Four soldiers were killed in clashes in the temple area in 2008 and three more in a gunbattle last April. Smaller flare-ups continue to be reported between troops in the area.

This kid who is deliberately and determined to misspell the name Hun Sen as "Hun Xen" is a naked shame to Khmer race.
The shame may look minimal but it still is. He is a striker chucklehead and should not be working for a Khmer prominent website like KI which is read by both locals and foreigners.
He himself is unknowingly serving and doing a favor for the enemies and to enrich the psychological strength of foreigners. And that is a pure stupidity. Was Pol Pot so bad when he killed any known "stupid intellectual"? He killed them all, the good and the stupid, didn't he?

I know at this moment you have the right to be mad and write bad about Hun Sen. I've the same feeling. But whatever Hun Sen said at this time is absolutely correct and I'm supporting him. I don't like him too but the stupid Surin Pitsuwan is not a good model for ASEAN. Hun Sen is mad now I'm supporting 110%. Surin shouldn't made any remarks toward Cambodia. You can hate Hun Sen now or before but at the moment we must united with him so the outsider like Surin can't look down on Cambodia anymore.

I'm not writing bad about Hun Sen but about a kid working for KI who continues to spell the name Hun Sen as Hun Xen which is childish to me. And I'd like to see decent and more professionalism in a fine Khmer website like KI. It's for the image of the Khmer race as well.

Hun Sen was so mad at his challenger, the current Thai government, and he cursed him to release his fume of anger. But that is another issue between the two funny governments - the gov't of the Khmer and of the Thai. I could care less for the moment about their quarrels in hope that soon they'll find good solution and get along better.
Here I'm talking about the Khmer journalists working for KI. I would like to see their strong stance at professionalism. A stance that would eventually lead to their good reputation and thus they'd get respected and admired. After all we are Khmers and I feel good when any Khmer citizen earns honor of any kind. But I'm getting heartburn and embarrassed when I see constant childishness in a fine news source like KI. Feel like kicking some asses.

I've been a regular KI-media reader since its inception. In spite of my respect , the only thing I don't like about this website--which makes it look totally unprofessional--is the way KI staff and readers express themselves in their writing, changing people's names and articles' titles, and calling people all sorts of names.
They should have been more decent and should have learned to be respectful of others. It's just sad!
