Long Beach Press Telegram (California, USA)
Press-Telegram staffers and a former reporter have been honored in the California Newspaper Publishers Association 2009 Better Newspapers Contest.
Writer Greg Mellen received Second Place in the Writing category among newspapers up to 75,000 circulation for "Davik's Odyssey," the story of a sick Cambodian girl brought to Long Beach by a local group, Hearts Without Boundaries, to have a quarter-sized hole in her heart repaired. Mellen was also a Daily Blue Ribbon Finalist for his series, "Exiled to Cambodia," the story of Long Beach deportees who found despair and redemption in the land of their birth.
Staff photographer Stephen Carr was honored with a Second Place for his portrait, "A Feast for Families," showing a man and his grandson sharing a Thanksgiving dinner, sponsored by the Salvation Army and Ristorante daVinci.
Former P-T reporter Wendy Thomas Russell won a Blue Ribbon Finalist award for"Judging Kids," a part of the Press-Telegram's series "Kids and Crime: Inside Juvenile Justice."
"These awards reflect the Press-Telegram's continuing commitment to strong local news coverage," said publisher Linda Lindus. "We are proud of the staff's achievements. They deserve the recognition."
