Several Cambodian citizens came to look at the attempt to pull out a powerful Buddha statue from the river in Kandal province. The attempt to save the statue that people believe was dumped into the water by the Khmer Rouge was not successful even though a religious ceremony accompanied by three Buddhist and Brahman prayers was conducted.

Khmer! if you want people to be serious about us please stop this nonsense, if you don't have enough strength to pull out the statue out praying will not help.

While I respect Buddha being ignorance and perform such act is just embarassing and show sign of weakness for people like Hun sen to take advantage off.

With all due respect, sir, it is my believe that these people are not attempting to pull Mary, Joseph, or Jesus out of the river.

War is peace

It is the reality in Cambodia. There are many people who are very superstitious, especially the country folks. Unfortunately, Khmer newspapers and magazines help spread the unreasonable belief.

Boudha was clear, he is in Nirvana, he cannot come back anymore, he want to say, don't ask him for help, he can't, follow his DHAMA.
Khmers seem don't understand. Why ? Long road to do.

it's just a cultural or tradition thing that some khmer people hang on since from ancient time. it may not be scientific, but spiritually, it is soothing, etc, good for the peace of mind, etc... i don't think there is anything wrong with it; however, in a modern, competitive world, though, it is not considered significant any more. it's just people are so rooted in ancient tradition. let them be. it is spiritually healthy for them this way. but make sure to keep it separate from governing, keep it separate from school, keep it separate from state affairs, keep it separate from science, etc... we all have to accept them and respect their believe that may not be the same as yours. that's called learning to live together without so much problems. god made us all different, even in our thinking, belief, etc... who to say what they do it wrong; it is more like outdated, but not wrong, really. the key it to keep it all separated from gov't, teaching, state affairs, etc... it just their personal belief! just like some of us belief in jesus or other god. well, for them, they belief in buddha statue, superstition, animist spirit, etc... we all have to respect that for all god's children are as diverse as all life forms on this planet, ok! god bless all. study the psychology branch called culture and mental illness by professor richard j. castillo and you will understand this very philosophy of different believes, etc, on this earth. in america, they emphasize to keep religion separate from the states. this is the same concept with cambodia, too, you know. if it serves people well, then let them be! you have to be educated to understand and be tolerant about all of this going on in our planet. we all share the same planet, by the way.

If praying and the result comes true then why Khmer Rouge have killed millions and Hun Sen still continues to suffers poor citizens!

Do people ever think? Should they have at lease some basic concience, sense of rghts and wrong! Pathetic! Disgraceful! This is 21st century....

it's about the peace of mind, alright! whatever makes people happy and feel soothe, etc is good for them. some people may not agree with their believe, however, who to judge that what these khmer people are doing is wrong? in fact, it is peaceful and interesting to observe this ancient traditon. it's like people on the outside are observing and seeing ritual of the ancient world. be proud of it for we are seeing what our ancestors from thousands of years ago are doing the same thing these villagers are doing right now. have you ever wonder how the great khmer angkor are celebrating and living their lives? well, this may be that tradition from that era and beyond, that most of the world never understand or never saw. well, in villages in cambodia, these same old traditionn is still well and alive, believe it or not. accept it and let people be in their ancient belief. we cannot judge others like this, ok!

Let Khmer believe in their own religion. You are her free to believe in nothing then don't believe in anything. But if you go to church/mosque/synagoue to pray to an invisible man in the sky somewhere then you have nothing to say about modern times or in this age - you are just as much superstitious.

The majority of the world population live in superstition- sometimes labeled as monotheism . Only a select few are truly living in a free of religion world.

Anonymous said...

i think it's about choices. people will choose to belief in anything they want. just like some chose atheist, some chose jesus, muslim, christianity, islam, catholic, etc... it think religion is just another word for different philosophies of the world, really. instead of judging their belief, why not try to study and understand it! it makes the world goes around and colorful, too, you know!

Anonymous said...

i think people's belief like this is due to isolation and staying ignorant from the world. those of us who are lucky enough to travel the world and see other countries, people, etc, will change; while people like this who never even set foot outside of their villages, commune, country, etc, will hang on to old ways like this. see, it's all about isolation and ignorant. now ignorant isn't always a bad word, it just a word to describe those of us who are not educated to understand about the world around us. i think to change people's perception or perspective, we have to encourage them to travel the world, to learn from others from all over the world, to be educated and learn from everybody in the world, friends, enemies, strangers, foreigners, etc...; to expose them to the outside world, etc... otherwise, they will hang on to their old beliefs if they never get a chance to learn about the other side of the world out there, really! believe it or not, education will make all of us think openly, really!

IF! people beleived that catolic take side with Hitler and all Gods and religion not helping them but guns! THe FUCKING COMMUNIST SHOULD CONTROLE THE WORLD BY NOW, NOT DISOLVE LIKE THE FUCKING SOVIET!

And you think like the fucking Moe Tentong and ah Ho Chi Minh!!!!

Anonymous said...

10:37 PM, you're wrong,
belief has nothing to do with education, you belive or you don't belive, I know personaly educated persons, engineers, with Master degree, they belive, it's stupid for me but they really belive.
May be you're wrong, I'm wrong, who knows ?
No one has proved that god exists but no one has proved that doesn't exist either..
Scientifically none is wrong or right.

some people who think outside or them being traveler of the world made them modern and open their eyes in term of spirituality to "not" believe anymore.

When i reality, the countries they will go to or live in, are also country who are by these people's own term, if they truly see, "ignorant".

These countries outside of Khmerland are known to be either "Christian nation", "Muhamod nation", or "Yaweh" nation, or even "Brahman" nation.

Where have you travel mr. traveler? That you have truly seen a country that does not observed the belief in supernatural?

Whether it be in the salvation of a final judgement day where all the deads will rise, or the religion of five times a day prayer to only one direction, or the religion where still living people are worship as living gods?

Can you find any where in this world Mr. Traveler?

Anonymous said...

Just because u travel the world doesn't make u a clever person. U can be stupid and travel the world. A bunch of these rich Khmer here travel the world, but they're still ignorant. There's no correlation between your belief and your intelligence. People will believe what they want to believe. As long as your belief doesn't hurt anybody else, then the hell with it. Believe whatever u want. So don't give us that bullshit.

All,
This is not about religion, really Buddhism teaches people not to be ignorant, not to blindly believe what people said but to observe and learn. I conceder myself a Buddhist but I don;t go to pray for the stone to pop up, it's no miracle it's just pure ignorant. Having said that I do not mean to put down a religion rather to highlight the fact that we are so foolish by some idiot that we are prone to be taken advantage of.
Embarrassing....!

let religion be a private matter. keep it separate from state affairs. that's all! there's a good reason to keep it separate; i think we all know that! of course, people belief or superstition can be ridiculous to some who may have different belief, however, it is their rights to belief in whatever religion as long as it's not infringing on other's belief or rights, and as long as they don't impose it as a state religion or use that philosophy to guide the country or lead the country of cambodia. that's where the line is drawn, really! keep it to themselves! it's not a national belief, a private ceremony only.

just don't make it mandatory at in school, though! i like to observe the the scene, but i don't belief in it like these elderly, although i'm khmer. i accept people's rights, but i don't belief in it!

All churches in Cambodia must be abolished.

All Christians must not allow to work or live in Cambodia.

This is a Buddhist land. All the dirty Christians must remove their God's houses out of Cambodia.

Fuck Jesus! Fuck the Christians.

Anonymous said...

People have a right to believe whatever they want to believe. However, in this case, they went to bit far. If you want to remove Buddha statue, just take a freakin crane and remove it. What with all that stupid chanting. If it didn't work before, it will never works here. Look at the poor people, who always give money to Wat and try to do good deeds, what do they get in return? Nothing, zero! In addition , they are suffering even more than before. The poor and suffering people are usually those who are spirituals. Do god, (Jesus, Buddha) help them? I don't think so! Rich people don't give a craps about religion, still the money keeps coming. And the spiritual? that's question? Wake up? and ask yourself, any miracle happens to you lately?

A bunch of ungreatful human beings--what do you have that were not given to you from someone else?

Did you give yourself live to start your own living? Weren't the house prepared before you came to be? Wasn't the wind (breath) there before you took your first breath?

If your answer is 'no' then you talk without knowledge--full of arrogant.
