Laura Mam: A Khmer Youtube sensation?

I just have come across Youtube music videos of Laura Mam, a young Khmer woman whom I think is quite talented, sings and performs exceptionally well. I hope she makes it into Hollywood or the American musical chart. I hope Khmer people, regardless of who they are and where they live, will support Laura wholeheartedly. Good luck, Laura.

Laura Mam - Smoke Weed

LauraMamMusic April 28, 2008This is a song I wrote after an interesting weekend filled with fun adventures. Hope you can enjoy it! Here are the lyrics:

Laura Mam - Khmer Song Chnam Oun 16 Cover

LauraMamMusic November 19, 2008So I was sick of writing and I decided to make an impromptu mini vlog and a cover of Chnam Oun 16! I miss youtube video making and can't wait to continue. Enjoy! Thank you Guitar Pikz for sending the tabs to Chnam Oun 16!!!

Laura Mam - L'Amour Cover by Carla Bruni

LauraMamMusic May 13, 2008Hey loves,

This is a French song called L'Amour by Carla Bruni. My dear cousin Steven requested this song quite some time ago and I would like to dedicate this video to him.

Btw, I wrote the solo in the middle of the song, so please excuse my only recently experimented solo skills. Highly enjoyable however!

Steven, je t'aime mon amour. Tu es mon coeur!

Sorry for the bad sound quality.

Laura sound like Kampuchia Krom. Making the true spirit of Khmer look so stupid. Anybody can do that!! post stupid video clip on Youtube.

I'm Khmer next to Hak Heng Restaurant. talk to me all of your suckers who don't know how to listen to real khmer song instead wasting their life way with this "baby step voice" LOL

Laura, great performance. You are much better than some of the singers in Cambodia, like Meng Pich Chenda who sound very high-pitched which irritates me a lot. Just ignore all the negative comments and strive for success. I recommend you go to Cambodia and perform on TV or live to Khmer audience, they will be proud of you. Go for it girl!

If her cd and dvd made it to Cambodia it will only be sold to the youn for ey chaiy!! That's garbage..

Wow, I can't believe you all made a disrespecting comments toward this young girl.

Instead of encourage her, you're all are putting her down!

Wow, no wonder Cambodian/Khmer has no place to go in this world. No wonder we don't have intelligent people.

Please don't do that!
I really proud of her and admire her that she has the guts to stand up for Khmer.

Laura, you're doing the best. Please keep up the good work girl.

Dear Sir/ Madame,

I believe that some of you who made comments on Laura Mam's song do not speak French.

I can assure you that her French is impeccable/ perfect. This lady is talented. She speaks French without accent, though is brought up in US.

You can believe me. I am a CPP member, who speaks Khmer, English, French and Russian (and also wrote books in those languages).

Congratulation Laura. I can't not be more proud of you. Your talent in music is exceptional and I hope to hear more of you.

Many old Khmer chauvinist pigs out there are terrified to see a young khmer girl take the lead in anything.

This old Khmer/US paratrooper had jumped parachutes many times with girl ahead and behind.

Have seen a Khmer Rouge female soldier still cursing and kicking while lay wounded in a pool of blood, not wanting help from the Khmer Republic medic....wow what a spectacle I could not forget. We need more girls/women of these type so we can start kicking ass.

Go Laura my dear teach these sissies what a breed you are!

Big Cheer for my girl, don't look back, and sing your heart out!!!!!!

What else is left of Khmer is a moron like you who still have a tube protruding from your nose to assist you for your last breath. I am not here to judge what you are or who you are, but I've seen enough of you in this blog that does nothing but depreciate a talented young woman who exposed her music for all of us to enjoy.
I hope you expired your last breath after reading my post.

Ms. Mam is a talented Young lady who step out of her
comfort zone and do things that many Cambodian parents deprived us from. She is so fortunate to have a good parenting who allowed her to exercise her ability to do what she likes......without boundary. She don't need to be reminded of her talent, but a little appreciation goes a long
way.
My advice to Laura is...sing your ass off and don't let a single of imbecile discourage you.
It won't be too long before she have fans all around the world clinging onto her. And...I am one of them.
I am proud to be Cambodian and you just make it even sweeter. patiently awaiting for your debute album.
Thank you for sharing!

Laura Prahok, Laura Mam, Laura Pa-ork. It all smells bad, yet it taste good but will kill your vocals before singing.

The bleaching of the skin in Cambodia is bun rany and her youn women associate's campaign to manipulate and make true khmer feel uncomfortable for being dark. Most of that product comes from vietnam. They are the one's whom are really inconfident and are descendents of the youns.

Music is universal language! It is nice to see Laura Mam sings to the world! Even if I don't like all her music but if I like just one of her music and I would still buy the whole CD!

I would say to Laura Mam and don't discourage by any of the negative comments if one day you become successful and it will be your determination and ambition! People who say negative about you because they can't be like you! And for those who can do and why don't they do so the whole world can judge them!

Awesome Laura. Keep on going and good luck on your singing career.

Disregard on the negativity.

You are very attractive Laura, I dream to have you like a daugther in law because of the beauty spot on your left jaw..

Anonymous said...

I agree with you 8:06, I can not stand Pich Chanda voices. It just plain irritating, annoying and the list go on. The high pitch from her nostril is unbearable. I hate it. She is the worst singer in any Cambodia song and also the famous ones. I do not get it.
I think Laura is very talented. She plays piano, write songs, sing and going to school for master or could be a PHD. She mentioned in one of the clip about writing thesis. Her accent is a typical asian kids who born and raise in America. I think she has a smooth and pleasant voice. It sound a lot like American blue jazz. Good luck to whatever you do, but do not smoke weed.

Anonymous said...

Laura, a true Khmer beauty. You are very talented but also very beautiful. Your "Sva Ram Monkiss" performance in the video clip is wonderful. Just ignore all the negative comments and keep singing and performing because you are great, girl!

Anonymous said...

She could not be even 1/100 of Meng Pich Chanda. why so excited?
I'd rather listen to real khmer, but not vietnamese accented shit!

We all love you.

Keep it up.

You make Cambodia proud.

6:46 PM, I hate Keo Meng Pich Chenda's high-pitched and nasal voice too. Her high-pitched voice irritates me, but I hate her nasal voice to death. Laura's voice in "Sva Ram Monkiss" in the video clip is very sexy.

Anonymous said...

Now we're beginning to really see Cambodia in 2010. Something that is also really cool and stylist ( except the weed part ). Can we all agree to push the word lag behind to the corner for the moment? :)

OK

Only the stupid people and jeolous people who don't give her support. For the first comment, your stupid 5 years old daughter can't even talk right. Even you can't speak Khmer perfectly.

Khmer never help Khmer, but admire Youn helps each other. What're these stupid people?

You're doing fine, Laura, and you sing better than some Khmer karaoke singers in Cambodia or the US.

At least you can play guitar and piano. Most Khmer singers don't know the instruments. And you also know how to write song too.

Congratulation, Laura.

Yeah, Laura Man's monkey definitely get spanked overnight!

6:46PM
I can shed a little light as to why most people like Keo Pich Chanda's voice and some doesn't.
Most Cambodians prefer high pitch voice over soft voices. Take speakers for example. Some speakers tend to push out hard blaring tweeters called "horn tweeter." Which is harsh to the ears of some listener and soothing to others. My favorite is...Touch Sreynich...very soothing and natural. Her voice is natural and she doesn't have to force it to hit a low note. Hope this help!

Anonymous said...

I am not sure, why some of you are so stupid and blame Laura.
She is not a perfect person, but she still has a good personality, she love our country Cambodia like we all did.

You're absolutely right! When it come to jealousy/envy...I think Khmer is at the very top. This does nothing but divide our people and alienate us against one another. So sad to see these poster's who grew up in foreign land and lack the ability to bring our people together. What these moron does is divide us so others can conquer. Help the enemy...sort of speak.
Nevertheless, let us challenge 12:04PM to post his 5 year old on YouTube so we can be the judge.

How the hell is this dumb abnoxious broad gonna even be a role model if she's singing a song about smoking weed(marijuana) smoking? Is this her way of promoting drug use to our next Khmer generations? I don't know why there's all these comments condoning this "pothead culture".

Anonymous said...

PEOPLE, PLEASE STOP TALKING ABOUT LAURA MAM, OK!... I KNOW SHE IS SUCKY SUCKY LONG TIME. SO FINAL VERDICT IS THAT SHE IS SUCK AND THAT SHOULD BE FINAL. NOW GO LAY DOWN!

Anonymous said...

Dear Insecure Dude,

Funny how you call her a dumb, abnoxious broad.

Dumb = Abnoxious is spelled obnoxious
Obnoxious = The same person keeps posting the same hater remarks and everyone hates you
Broad = referring to weak and ignorant behavior

Huh! All of the terms you used strangely match your behavior. How odd!

Anonymous said...

To the guy/girl who just posted, brilliant observation

To the ignorant person previous post is referring to:

The song about smoking weed if you were smart enough to listen, which you obviously aren't, is about saying goodbye to temptation in order to be real to oneself. It's about understanding life and understanding the self. It's about not having fear.

You don't have to live in fear. And you don't have to live in fear of her movement since it asks you to take a good hard look at yourself and think about who you really are. She's basically asking people, even scared ones like you, to not fear themselves. Not trying to offend your precious pride.

Anonymous said...

Sheesh so many haters for your own people. Talking about Khmer Krom, you give more love to other culture than yours. You have no pride!!! U should be ashame. As for Laura, she's giving some positive light of Khmer. The percentage of Khmer at higher education is very low compare with Vietnamese and it's probably because so many Khmer won't support one another.

Anonymous said...

Laura marry me. Please..

Anonymous said...

Laura I am so proud of you my dear! Sadly khmers aren't that supportive of their own peopl...there is a lot of jealousy amongst khmers in general. Please ignore the negative comments. People please learn to give constructive criticism rather than insults. Khmer still have a long long long way to go in terms of loving and supporting one another.

She is khmer-american so of course she will have an accent, I am too and I am proud of my cute accent. Do not deny her of her khmer heritage because she might not look or fit your view of a typical khmer. Be or learn how be more open minded. Appreciate different musice, genre, etc etc. We are not in "Year Zero", society move forward and we all need to incorporate new ideas to compete with the outside word. Laura brings fun and funk to a culture and society that has suffered and is still not over their dark past. If chinese, korean, japanese, vietnamese.thai, etc etc can appreciate change then Khmers should too. We did once remember??? It was called "Sangkum Rirh Niyum"...khmer arts/music/culture/cinema coexisted in harmony and peace with its western influences. (Moral of the story is...) Don't hate appreciate, luv your Khmer sister! :-)

PS: luv ya Laura love that u re so down to earth and have so much fun! Luv your style too in fashion...simple and not too sexy like some others who have no talent and sell more of their body or looks. Luv that you guys respect yourself, Real Artist! Also khmer music lately is very repetative in terms of MV styles and it is kinda all over the place. U re style is fresh and modern. I luv that u resing oldies in a more modern edge and sway. Bring back songs that has been forgotten by the youths, definitly do what u do girl! Khmer music from the 60s and 70s were heavily influenced by latin music, bolero, blues, rock, etc so no worries. You re not changing anything, ure just tweaking it to fit modern taste! But I hope to see more of your own music soon, doesn't have to be your writing but something new and fresh. I wished khmers had a modern day Voy Ho or etc who can write music beautifully. Until then u rock laura!

Kmuy Laura Mam is overated in my opinion. Her singing not very good just mediocre and I think she is famous in Srok Khmer because a lot of people in Srok Khmer love all things from America, good or bad. When kmuy Laura sing Khmer, I dont understand her very well, i think she butchers our beatiful Khmer language. Her and Kmuy Bosba Panh both do that beacus they both use their foreign privilges and exploit Cambodia and go on tours so they can be famous even they both know there are more talented singers and artists out there both in Cambodia and America who can perform better but dont have chance because they are too poor or do not have connection. Kmuy Bosba Panh sings poros than Kmuy Laura (Opera songs of mostly) but that is because Kmuy Bosba had professional trainer since she was in diapers(probably from a privilaged background to afford that). I am not surprised if both kmuys were granted access to perform at Angkor Wat due to connections with either the Royalty family or other big peeps in Srok Khmer becuase Kmuy Bosba is the niece of filmmaker Rithy Pan and Laura's mom Thida Buth, I heard shes from well-off family before the war.(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jir3L5mcy1A). If you bong poun want to hear really good music from overseas Khmer/Cambodian American artists, google or youtube the following:
-April Nhem, Panharee Thang, Natalie Mam, Chantha Ouk, Kevin Thach, Bochan Huy, Sokhom Thoeun, Po Kim, Vannara Chim, Sarath Yun, and and a whole lot more but can only remember this much for now. These people are not popular because they don't try hard, but their music speaks for itself, that is why they have fans that understands real music. Kmuy Laura, Pu do not hate you, Pu think your singing is not very good thats all, but Pu think you and Kmuy Bosba posses other musical talents like ability to play musical instrument(s) and compose songs. Pu also think Laura is very pretty, so maybe go into modeling instead ok? and just do singing on the side or at kareoke house parties, nah?

Good luck,
Pu Sok from Texas

Saw her at Hard Rock Cafe Phnom Penh for Smart Event. So amateur ! I can understand that she wants to live her dream to be a music star but, she doesn't bring anything new/good to Khmer music. Especially in Cambodia where there are so many good musicians and singers. Good network in Phnom Penh but really poor music.
