Hun Sen Statue Removed After Dust-Up

Chun Sakada, VOA Khmer
Phnom Penh Friday, 18 June 2010

“I would like make a public apology and would like Samdech Prime Minister Hun Sen to pardon me favorably.”
A senior government adviser removed a statue of Prime Minister Hun Sen from the Anti-Corruption Institute Friday following strong criticism by the premier’s cabinet chief.

The cabinet chief, Ho Sithy, told VOA Khmer Friday the statue ran counter to Cambodian culture, where general practice is to honor the dead, not the living, with statuary.

The adviser, Om Yentieng, who is also head of the nascent Anti-Corruption Unit, said in a statement Friday he had the statue erected “without prior permission and by my own decision.”

“I completely removed a statue of the prime minister, Hun Sen, from display at the Anti-Corruption Institute,” Om Yentieng said. “I would like make a public apology and would like Samdech Prime Minister Hun Sen to pardon me favorably.”

Meach Pon, an adviser for Khmer traditions at the Buddhism Institute said that typically statues are erected for Cambodian heroes, like Lady Penh, the woman of legend from whom the capital draws its name, and others.

Ho Sithy said Friday he wanted “all state institutions and the public to stop displaying or selling statues of top Cambodian leaders from now on.”

Hun Sen loves his statues, but his fortune teller doesn't. The fortune teller has his way AGAIN.

Last year, Hun Sen refused to attend the Grand Opening ceremony for the completion of the brand newly constructed Council of Ministers Office. The Chinese government paid $20,000,000 for the building; Hun Sen reviewed and approved the building plan.

BUT after completion, Hun Sen's fortune teller told Hun Sen that he can't work in that building because it looks like a Chinese "mong" (Chinese burial).

So, Sok An got blame for it--constructing an unsafe building due to corruption (luckily it was before the passing of the Anti-corruption law). Hun Sen ordered the construction for another building adjacent to the "mong" because the "mong" building is "UNSAFE" and it's for housing the staff. So, now we have a grandeur building for the professional staff and a smaller (side-line) building for the jungle man and his merrymen.

The point is: Hun Sen doesn't want to work in the MONG and now he doesn't want people to "worship" him DEAD while he is alive.

Hun Sen's fortune teller is the most powerful person in Cambodia. Hun Sen is the "decho seecho"--he loves his busts displayed in public.

Hun Sen:
No, I don't pardon you if your wife doesn't have sex with me.

Om YinTeang:
My daugther has already with your son.

Hun Sen:
My son with the daugther and me with the mother.

Om YinTeang:
O..K

The point is: Hun Sen is AFRAID of DEATH. He doesn't want to associate with DEATH/MONG or his own STATUES.

The irony is that the person who is responsible for so many death is afraid of death himself.

A fortune teller foretold the death of Hok Lundy so accurately that would an unbeliever like me believe. This fortune teller also foretells that Hun Sen will join Hok Lundy within three (3) years of Hok Lundy's death.

Om Yentieng will sell his body too if Hun Sen ask to do. That how ignorant and some case stupid some Cambodian political slaves are... These are the kind of people that making Hun Sen worse... and average Cambodians and the future generations are paying the price for their ignorance.

That expression of "the emperor has no cloth on" is fitting perfectly. When a leader is surrounded by sycophants, he put himself in isolation from reality, and that usually would lead to the demise of the leader's own self.

Bad omen for Hun Sen! Sooner or latter he will be forced to remove from power.

Om Yen Tieng is a real sycophant being good for nothing.

You can see how far he is willing to go to kiss his boss's ass.

Shame on you, Om Yen Tieng!

Look at yourself in a mirror; your father cannot be proud of you at all!

This idiot is incredibly idiotic!

For year was Khmer Rouges involved with the Killing fields in Cambodia, Now is Xmer Sdech or Khmer Dictator?
That is the CPP King, not for all Khmer Nation.

Is the Sdech Korn?
In Cambodia, they make black to white but the white to black. They create the Lay but they seat on the law, How powerless people can live in this this country?

In my view, that is a politic played and agreed in advanced by all that CPP strategists. It has already run into the blind supports of CPP that King Hun Sen deserve that statue. In CCP, to my experience, every individual prominent member is impermissible to do sth without prior approval from the its leaders; otherwise, he or she would face a disciplinary punishment.

Imaginatively, statue of King Hun Sen at the Corruption Institute would ironically arrests the public attention that this is the statue of the most corrupt leader....

CPP is too strong to challenge that all truly democratic parties must unite in one in the upcoming election.

SenVarman's fortuneteller is Da Viet, the simple Reason why SenVarman ain't use the new Chinese building, because his fortuneteller is afraid of Chinese spy. SenVarman is honestly obeyed to his fortuneteller, he ain't like Hok Lundy!

I realise that it is an integral part of Cambodian culture to show respect to those of higher status. However, in a democracy in which representatives are chosen from the people by the people to represent the people's interests, such fear and cringing of the wrath of the prime minister seems completely out of place.

Such an attitude seems very inconsistent with equality and public service inherent in a modern democratic system.

Showing respect is important to those who deserve it but prostrating yourself in the manner of a subject and his king reminds me of numerous historical similarities with monarchies throughout history not modern democracies.

Would a different prime minister or minister or other elected official receive the same level of respect and fear? Would we all be bowing and scraping to Sam Rainsy if he became prime minister? Would officials scuttle for cover and beg forgiveness from him? Is that the sort of society we want? A society where the people fear their representatives??

Should an elected official receive the same respect as a divine king or even be thought of as having the power of a king? I notice now that people no longer petition the king - it is the prime minister they rest their hopes on, yet no-one is discussing how this is fundamentally changing Cambodian culture and structures of power. Ideally, a king is for life but prime ministers come and go - returning to their private lives and private interests.

Are we in danger of creating a new breed of 'royals'? New 'royals' who will demand the same level of respect and fear as the historical old royals but will only be able to keep this respect and fear if they remain in office. This would also be inconsistent with a democracy.
