Antagonism between Cambodia and Thailand is intensifying in the run up to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting in Brazil this weekend, over the management of World Heritage Site Preah Vihear Temple. Led by Thai government supporters Chamlong Srimuang and Chaiwat Sinsuwongse, about 1,000 protestors arrived at UNESCO’s Bangkok office this morning to oppose Cambodia’s unilateral management plan that will be submitted during the meeting.

In 2008, UNESCO approved the Preah Vihear Temple as a World Heritage Site in Cambodia. Opposition to Cambodia’s management plan comes from a murky resolution by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in 1962. While the ICJ granted the temple to Cambodia, it did not settle the ownership of a 4.6 square kilometer piece of land next to the structure.

Tul Sitthisomwong from the Thai position was quoted in the Bangkok Post as saying, "It is the right direction for the government not to accept the Cambodian-made plan until the process of the land demarcation is complete."

From January to June this year, the Preah Vihear Temple attracted 46,400 visitors. “In the future, Preah Vihear Temple will become the second-largest tourist destination after Siem Reap’s Angkor Wat -- as roads and infrastructures around the temple have been developed,” Hang Soth, director general of the Preah Vihear National Authority (PVNA), told the Phnom Penh Post.

Tul notes the necessity of the two nations to develop the World Heritage Site together, but Cambodia is not expected to let go of its sole proprietorship to the major tourist attraction easily.

why should we share with a nation who has a history of looking down to us with contempt? Calling us enemies and savages and disloyal nation in their history textbooks?

Do you think that Khmer can work and co-managed side by side with a group of racist and opportunist who have continuously plunder our cultural wealth and heritage while attempting to mask to the world and put off our artifact and ancestor's handicraft as Thais?

It is unacceptable. If Thailand comes out and say okay, we love and respect Cambodia and we appreciate the rich culture it's civilization has endowed on us and we promised to change our nation's attitude and our history textbooks and animosity and contempt for Khmer life - then maybe we can put our indignation aside for a moment and act out of understanding that Thailand is perhaps a younger brother in terms of culture to Cambodia and we can get a long. So far as the status quo remains and the Thai attitude towards Khmer stay, it is LOUD AND CLEAR! NO THAILAND! STAY AWAY FROM OUR CULTURAL HERITAGE! YOU ARE NOT KHMER or KHOM!

Since Hun Sen was a Khmer Rouge commander, now a Khmer Rouge leader and had many of his political opponents and journalists assassinated, I wonder if he have any plan to assassinate the Thai Prime Minister (Ahbullshit Vejjajiva)?

Hor Nam Hong added that Thai leaders wanted to review about registering Preah Vihear temple (of Cambodia) with the Committee of World Heritage of UNESCO and also wanted to register jointly for Preah Vihear temple. "Preah Vihear temple and land surrounding areas belongs to Cambodia not Thailand according to the verdict of World Court's rule in 1962," Hor stressed.

"It is big mistake and serious one that were created by Thai leaders," he said, adding that they have spoken without thoughts.

"If they want to have armed conflicts for third time, we welcome," he said, adding "today we have known that Thai command for second region put their troops on alert, our troops also is ready for fighting, but so far the situation there is calm."

Moreover, Hor Namhong said "the border tension was caused by Thai side. We (Cambodia) want to resolve the border issue peacefully and friendly. But our effort made no result."

"Military tension has not occurred yet today, but tomorrow I do not know," Hor said, adding that Preah Vihear temple already registered as cultural and humanitarian matters for all people.

"We are ready to deal border issue with Thailand by using peaceful resolution, international law, military, or diplomatic ways," he noted.

Many foreign presses covers Preah Vihear's issues. These coverages, unfortunately, are biased as they have been fed by misinformation from Bangkok. Non of the press quoted any infromation from Cambodia...What are the responsible Khmer's officials are doing? Has Khieu Kanarith been drunk all these day-long?
