Prime Minister Hun Sen met with his Thai counterpart, Abhisit Vejjajiva, on Friday, as both agreed to move toward peaceful resolution of a contentious border issue that has turned into a nearly intractable row.

Speaking to VOA Khmer ahead of the meeting Saturday afternoon, Abhisit said he hoped for a “good conversation.” He declined to comment on whether Thailand would seek concessions from Cambodia in order to solve the border issue.

Both sides claim a small stretch of land west of the clifftop temple of Preah Vihear and have heavily armed troops entrenched along the border. Only recently did the two sides restore diplomatic ties, after a spat last year over the hiring of ousted Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra as an economic adviser to Hun Sen.

On Friday afternoon, Hun Sen arrived ahead of Abhisit at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel's room for border talk at the sideline of US-ASEAN Summit. The two men greeted each other warmly, and Abhisit requested they talk one on one. In a small sideroom, the two men talked as their foreign ministers waited outside for approximately half an hour.

Prior to the meet, Surin Pitsowan, the secretary-general for Asean, told VOA Khmer it was a “good sign” the two had decided to meet at the “highest level.”

Abhisit declined to comment following the meeting, and Hun Sen was walled off by security.

But Prak Sokhon, a close adviser to Hun Sen, told reporters the meeting had been positive. Both men agreed to avoid confrontation and not to add more troops along the border. They also agreed to strengthen agreements and cooperation to alleviate the border tension, he said.

The two are expected to meet again early next month in another Asean meeting in Europe, as well as Hanoi.

What is up with Hun Sen this time? He has become soft. Is this his political survival strategy with Abhisit who is never afraid of Hun Sen militarily? Hahaha. Hun Sen said he had slept 9 hours. That is more than the average person can get. No wonder Hun Sen always need advisors to tell him what is going on. You should watch him getting lost during Obama's welcoming speech. Lol. Hun Sen was so lost that instead of focusing on the message, he kept pulling out something that looked like cards after cards. Hahah. Hun Sen is only a top dog in Cambodia where everyone hate his ugly azz, but on world stage, Hun Sen is simply a nobody. In addition, look Hun Sen getting lost in the building as well. You see when he has no advisors around he is completely lost. He is like a struggling student in politics who never get better as the years go by. Hahhaha.

PM Abhisit spoke to VOA Khmer...should our PM Hun Sen have spoken to VOA Khmer too? Sometimes, when you speak to a free press (not CTN), it gives you credibility and strength because you cannot spin, evnen better if our PM Hun Sen agrees to sit down with RFA or VOA and have people call in with any questions.

Interesting how you have a highly educated graduate of Eton & Oxford University on one side while you have an ignorant & traitorous jungle monkey peasant Khmer Rouge on another side. I feel so embarrassed having ah k'bot chiet hun sen as our leader. To Abhisit and Obama, please use hand sanitizer after shaking hands with that chain-smoking asshole who prostitutes himself to Hanoi (aka Hun Sen).

Abhisit is a real Thai Prime Minister
unlike Hun Sen is just an ugly Vietnamese dog. Vietnamese are very smart by using their dog to bite Abhisit in order to gain more territory for themselves.

10:10 AM,

I agree. The Viets are smart. They are using Hun Sen as a proxy to create massive civil unrest in Thailand by making the Thai leadership appearing incompetent in terms of the Preah Vihear issue. The Preah Vihear issue and other border issues cause the Thais to become divided and thus a whole country slips into turmoil with an unstable government.

Unstable governments are not popular with tourists and international corporations. As a result, foreign investments and tourism redirects itself into Vietnam. Vietnam gains what Thailand loses. Vietnam increasingly tries to overtake Thailand as mainland southeast Asia's economic and military powerhouse. In the mean time, Hun Sen becomes more depended on Viet economic and political advising, strengthening Cambodia's slave bondage with Vietnam as a master. The world sees this only as one country being charitable to another. This makes it easy for Vietnam to control Cambodia and thus infusing Cambodia into Vietnam's sphere of influence. Vietnam's state controlled telecommunication & energy companies monopolizes Cambodia through deals made with Hun Sen. And the fact that there are millions of illegal Viets in Cambodia, you might as well consider Cambodia as a large province of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

You should have seen Hun Sen speaking English. It is a mess I tell you. Hun Sen can't even enunciate Khmer words properly. Lol. Now he wants to tackle English, nice try. You are not even close. Hahah. Do you know that Hun Sen can't even enunciate the Khmer letter r. How sad. Remember back in the day of the his days as a simple slave of the YUONs, he even added tones to the word Kampuchea. Hahahah. What a stupid jerk Hun Sen was. Then after seeing other proper Khmer speaking people, he started to enunciate the way others did. He is one incompetent speaker of the human langauge. Actually he is only good for being a dog slave for ah YUONs who can't even speak anything correctly. Hahah.
