“The United States intends to play a leadership role in Asia. So we've strengthened old alliances; we've deepened new partnerships, as we are doing with China; and we've reengaged with regional organizations, including Asean.”
In his meeting with Asean leaders in New York last week, President Barack Obama vowed to deepen ties with the 10 Southeast Asian nations, including Cambodia.

“The United States intends to play a leadership role in Asia,” Obama said during the first US-Asean Summit on Friday. “So we've strengthened old alliances; we've deepened new partnerships, as we are doing with China; and we've reengaged with regional organizations, including Asean.”

Obama said the US is focusing on economic trade and growth with Asean—a bloc of about 600 million people.

“As a Pacific nation, the United States has an enormous stake in the people and the future of Asia,” he said. “The region is home to some of our largest trading partners and buys many of our exports, supporting millions of American jobs. We need partnerships with Asian nations to meet the challenges of growing our economy, preventing proliferation and addressing climate change.”

The US also needs to bolster its political and security cooperation with Asean, he said.

Analysts say Asean is increasingly playing a leadership role in Asia and has the potential to be a positive force in global economics. But China has had heavy influence here for a long time, and the US has some catching up to do.

Last week's meetings, among Asean leaders including Prime Minister Hun Sen, came as tensions brewed between China and Japan over disputed areas in the South China Sea. Some Asean countries have similar disputes.

America seem to walk the tight robe right now, because of trying to build great relation with China. We all know that china is a man eater country or don't we? Wait until the republican party takes over in the US. That may give many people some hope for the real thing. The republican don't take shit like the Obama admin. does.. Hopefully the UN too will be running by America the greater Europe and Japan. Right now there is too much sympathy giving to those assh.le communist countries like vietnam cuba and china. It just make you vomit.

contrary to mr anonymouse in comment #1 its the right wing dictatorships that are most problem for the people of the world

the US is barely left of extreme right and really does not seem to care about human rights in the rest of the world, and even hardly ar home

the leadership ASEAN needs is real, non-military, encouragement to move to and maintain democratically elected governments

Indonesia is there but needs support otherwise their military may take over again

Thailand is in the grip of the royals and military which need to be suppressed before the country decays down to Burmas situation

Burma needs all the pressure everyone can place to suppress their military rape of the country

Agree with almost all, but if there had not been 2 millions Cambodian dead between 1975 and 1979 by the hand of Communist china and vietnam, perhpas there won't be anyone like comment #1.

Remember this normal or ordinary country and even the great America, are people. People have sympathy and compassion toward anotherr human being. Communist doesn't. It may run by people, but those people are running by gun point and Communist's doctrine or C revolution or Angkar. They are not people. They don't care for you. They will kill you if you stand in their way. It's too bad there are a lot of people in this world are being fool into it. That one, you can tell it to the bird. President Obama's people are mostly poor. That explains it. Poor people always lean toward Communist. They will pay later just like the Cambodian people do. Don't say no one tells you about it.

I can't wait to see this Obama and his Administration get kicked out of the Whitehouse by the Republican Party because they say one thing and do the other. It's just like sending aid to the Cambodian Military even they knew that that Military unit has commited crimes against civilians and human rights abuse .
