The ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MoEYS) along with a number of NGOs and international organizations conducted a survey on school age youths regarding the consumption of alcohol, drugs and sex.

The survey dubbed the MoEYS and NGOs’ investigation on 2,400 youths between the age of 10 to 24, which includes 1,253 boys and 1,236 girls, found that 91% of the boys consume alcohol or alcoholic beverages, whereas 70% of the girls said that they have consumed alcohol or alcoholic beverages.

Regarding sex, 41% of the boys and 23% of the girls indicated that they had sex and some even had abortions. In regards to the consumption of drugs, 15% of the boys and 4% of the girls said they have used drugs.

The survey was conducted in 8 provinces and municipalities: Phnom Penh, Battambang province, Kampong Cham province, Siem Reap province, Banteay Meanchey province, Svay Rieng province, Koh Kong province, and it took place at the beginning of 2010.

Pen Saroeun, director of educational health at MoEYS, said on 05 November that the survey was conducted during a period of 1 year in order to collect various statistics and the questions were asked to Cambodian youths along a number of hot spot areas where there are large crowds and where diseases could be easily spread.

Pen Saroeun added: “The areas are places where there are bars, karaoke parlors, massage parlors, street corners, soccer fields, attraction parks, public parks, snooker parlors, computer game parlors etc…”

Pen Saroeun indicated that after collecting the survey results, MoEYS called for cooperation between the authority and the NGOs in order to educate the youths so they may understand about the various dangers from consumption of drugs, alcohol and sex.

Dr. Um Sopheap, president of the Khmer HIV/AIDS NGO Alliance (KHANA), who uses the results of the survey, indicated that the survey is useful for Cambodia in regards to youth involvement in the use of drugs, alcohol and sex.

Um Sopheap said that the results of the survey could be used to set up new programs to educate the youths about the protection of their health: “This if the first time in Cambodia that there is such level of study, and we obtained this much scientific information. This is very needed information for programs to set up policies for the youths.”

The survey was conducted with the participation of UNICEF, WHO, UNFPA, UNESCO, UNAIDS, SRP, USAID and PRASIT etc…

in the past, they used the words "genocide, ethnic cleansing, and killed because of war, etc." Today, drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, glue, ett., this is nother form of ethnic cleansing, especially, it is so volunerable because of Phnom Penh Gov't makes it easy!

This is the exact results that dictator Hun Sen want to see in Cambodia, so that dictator Hun Sen and his Vietcong masters can easily control Khmer. Khmer Rouge(or Yuon Rouge better fits) is still at work under the Hun Sen regime, just a different version of it.

KHMER Angkor.

9:38 AM, I agree with you.

9:49 AM, I agree with you.

It is all about poisoning our youths which is the future backbone of our country.

It is part of Ho Chi Minh Indochina Federation.

Yesterday(Sunday, Nov. 7), the military junta in Burma held an election in 20 years.

For Burma who win who lose the election their country still on the world map.

For Cambodia Hun Sen win the election ( 2013 )our country still on the world map on paper only.

Hun Sen'v gov't CANNOT make anyone to become an alcoholic. It is a person's individual choice.

I thought Buddhism prohibit alcohol drinking. Perhaps need to start questioning this religion closely.

Cambodia will be taken over the Viet because Cambodians are weakened through these addictions. Cambodia has a very pitiful culture. Stop believing Buddha, and the worship of demons. Perhaps there is still hope.

If this bad behavior does not change, Cambodia's will be destroyed from within. Foreigners will just take over the whole country. Don't blame Yuon, don't blame Hun Sen. No one put a gun to your head to make you drink alcohol, do drug, get involve in illicit sex.

The more I read what is coming out of Cambodia, I see more and more perversion in society. Read Phnom Penh Post's police Blog and you can see for your selves the type of crimes going on in Cambodia. Children getting raped. Sexual again women on the rise.

Very, very sad the perversion that goes on and sometimes accepted as normal by society.

Vietnam, you can take over the perverted country. Perhaps too become perverted just like the people in there now.

Addicted behavior is in every country, in every culture.
But Cambodia get more than her share of these addictions. Rate of AIDS infection is coming back in Cambodia because of illicit sex.

Even in the US these addictions continue to grip Cambodian immigrants.

I have know Cambodian guy though married travel back to Cambodia just to indulge in illicit sex. This the type of behavior that destroy a nation from within.

I think most of these kid who involved in drug, alcohol and girls are theos students from the Students Federation Association and pourk ah Khmeng Wat students because they have money provides by Hun Sen. Real khmer kids never involve in stupid thing like this at all. In 80s and 90s we have lot of good Cambodian students. They help to defend the country but most of the students in Cambodia right now are the tools of Hun Sen. They are used to fight and harm their own people.

One correction to the post, Veitname migration did not start in the mid 80's, it started right after 1979, their migration were disguised by inflated number of population conducted by the then Heng Samrin regime, they cllected the statistics by providing ration free to people and at the same time encourage them to lie about the number of people in the fammily. We had 5 members of the family added to get more ration only now realize that statistics were collected and now used by the UN and scholar the like. In the mean time Veitnamese flowing in free to fill up these missing figures

It is very interesting to see many KI blogger blame just about everything on Hun Sen, drug addiction, alcoholism problems are no exception.

These people must think Hun Sen is the great khmer/yuon god responsible for every problem in Cambodia. I didn't know he is that powerful!

7:13PM,

I hope Vietnam can afford to build millions of cages. While they at it, they can build cages for the Viet immigrants now in Cambodia as well. They probably start to have Khmer minds by now. And who knows, perhaps one day they will turn against their own race in Viet land.

Regular young Khmers cannot afford to do that, only CPP members children can, leave them alone and let them die..
