After reading online article of "Neatee Koun Khmer" posted in ki-media.blogpsot.com, I would like to write something about how Buddha's teachings should be applied to the term "responsibility" as the discussion moderator, Koun Khmer, has focused on this week. Further more, the responsibility being discussed in the forum linked to the disaster occurred on Koh Pich during the Water Festival of Cambodia on the 22th of November, 2010.
Buddhism has been well-known for its rational explanation of all phenomena. And the core teaching of Lord Buddha substantially rests on the Four Noble Truth ie:
- the truth of the problems,
- the truth of the causes of those problem,
- the truth of those causes have its end, and
- the truth of methods using to end those causes
Repeatedly, Buddha articulated the responsibility of individuals in caring oneself and caring others. By nature, people have shared this common caring with one another by family line, associations or duties.
Dhamma literally means "responsibility". Buddha explained that whenever each of us take responsible for what we are assigned for or doing for, the people and society will be peaceful and experiencing justice. It is joyful to see a mother take care her son with responsibility; it is joyful to see a policeman patrolling the zone he is assigned to prevent crimes with responsibility; it is joyful to see a judge fairly hands a verdict to the accused with responsibility; and it is joyful to see Water Festival organizers be more rigid and responsible for what was happening on Koh Pich etc. In the law of Kamma stresses on both individual actions and associative responsible persons.
Cambodian people and their society have deeply been embedded by the culture of impunity, and this impunity has distorted their self-esteem and confidence. It has also prolonged their trauma or PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder" to a long term unhealable syndromes.
Below is the collection of some video clips of the Koh Pich tragedy for our CONDOLENCE and REMEMBRANCE

Regardless Buddha is a philosopher not a God? Why don't we give God a try! by unloading our problems and wishes to God and let God take care of Cambodia! instead trying the hard way, just leave it to God! but it's hard to change the regular Khmer/Cambodian mentality as it's already glued with Buddhism and take a look at us now! are we better off or not???? I don't know how to persuade the majority of us but I guess like the Buddha said: Khmean Krou Achar Na, Prodao Preah Ang Bannn Leuy!!!! and that is a big problem, indeed.
10:27 AM,
Do you really think that turning to Christianity is going to solve Cambodian problems?
A lot of Christians died and suffered tremondously in Cambodia during the KR as well and yet your Jesus was nowhere to be found.
Don't forget Pol Pot and Ta Mok may have repented and asked your Jesus to be their personal saviour before they died so they are now waiting for you in heaven.
Correction of above: tremendously
10:27 AM,
"Buddha said: Khmean Krou Achar Na, Prodao Preah Ang Bannn Leuy!!!!"
Buddha did not say the above sentence. You did!
Japanese people also practise Buddhism and yet their society is prosperous! Should they all be converted to Christianity to get better life?
Just worry about your own salvation!
If your Jesus is that powerful, then one day, everyone will believe in him. Perhaps you should try to convince the Jews first to believe in Jesus since he is also a Jew.
Thanks Heng Soy for sharing this article.
But as I can see that our bloggers seem to think that if Khmer could Change from Buddhism to Jesusism - all the problems will be solve...what is your respond on that? How about the buddhist pratic in Sigapore, China, Taiwan, S. Korea, and others?
Of course, the comment on changing Cambodia from Buddhist to Christianity or other to be more pro-active is just his personal thought and it will not affect to us at all as we have deeply understood Buddhism.
Like the author of this article stated, Buddhism is the most vibrant and realistic...not merely believe on redemption or god (in reverse d-o-g).
Of course, many Cambodians including monks are not practicing Buddhism correctly, that why Cambodia is still cheated by less educated people.
Thanks
The Buddha was a human being. He taught people to do good deed, not evil deed.Where is the Heaven and where is the hell?
The Heaven is in someone heart and hell is still in someone heart also.
Jesus christ is human being. He was not God.
These two religion leaders have three things:
The Buddha,the Dharma,and the sangha.
Buddha means full of knowledge; Dharma means laws or rules of living;and Sangha means disciples or monks ,preach the words of Buddha.
And about Christianity: God=God father living in Heaven;the son of God,the Jesus christ who preaches the words of God,and the Spirit,Ghost who lives in human body.
The Buddha is on Earth to Heaven, but Jesus Christ from Heaven down to Earth.
These two teaching founders have same goal.teach people to be good, not to do evil deed.
