PHNOM PENH — Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Thursday defended his son's recent military promotion, a move that has fuelled speculation the young man is being groomed to succeed his father.
Hun Manet, 33, is already chief of the ministry of defence's anti-terrorism unit as well as deputy commander of Hun Sen's personal bodyguard unit.
He was promoted to a two-star general in a ceremony earlier this month, and critics have said his rapid career progression could be seen as an attempt by Hun Sen to consolidate his political power.
But the premier has hit back, saying his son -- who graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point in 1999 and earned a doctorate in economics at Britain's University of Bristol -- was well-qualified for the roles.
"He joined the army in 1994. He has been in army for 16 years, and there is promotion within the army ranks," Hun Sen said in a speech broadcast on national radio.
Chea Vannath, a Cambodian independent political analyst, said Hun Manet's latest appointment was an attempt to "maintain political stability" in the country.
"I think that this promotion is to prepare for a smooth succession," she said, explaining that if Hun Sen ever wanted to quit politics "at least he has paved the way for his son to have a smooth transition, but I cannot tell in what capacity."
Hun Sen, 59, has ruled Cambodia since 1985, making him Asia's longest-serving prime minister. He has vowed to remain in power until he is 90 years old.

Some of my friends admired Hun Manet who graduated from the West Point. To me he just is nonething. West Point just pulled him in to make sure he understand democracy. In reality, he is not qualified to attend West Point, period. So don't brag about his West Point graduation with me.

Please explain to me how this monky can gain his PhD when he hasn't got even his bachelor degree. How the college in west point military training has to do with economic studies? Usually if you have a PhD degree, your name will be available at Google. Here I couldn't find his name at all. Can any body tell me about this PhD saga?

I have no idea about the promotion of Hun Maneth in terms of his qualification, study backgrounds and achievements just for such a short time. What I may understand is HUN ＳＥＮ is trying to even strengthen his post in power which will be guarded by his son. Phnom Penh Post reports this today as the successor of Hunsenism. According to his speech in Kompong Cham last two days, he would not set his son to get involved in politics. But can you trust the words of politician especially such a tricky Cambodian leader? Even a young child can guess for sure he is preparing his son to be his successor after 2022 when he gets too old in power. Cambodia will always be covered in Hunsenism while Hun Sen's family is rooting everywhere. TELA is belonged to one of his daughters, Cannadia Bank is belonged to his wife, LHR is belonged to his nephew, the national armed force is under control of his oldest son. All important infrastructures are under the hands of HUN SEN's family. How can common Cambodians survive even now or in the long future? Hun Sen's leadership is all linked with strong network of Hunsenism. Cambodians don't have guns, don't have armed forces, don't have money, don't have power and don't have rights to do like Hun Sen's family does. What can we do? Who can help change this for us? People say at least for 300 years until the clan of Hunsenism family depletes, then we can have something changed. But can we wait and survive until that long? We are worried and feel poor about the children in next generation... Living under political pressure, having no job and little thing to survive when compared to Hun Sen's family, they are rich and have lots of money to pay, to buy servants and dogs to protect them...What Cambodians can do now is just crying, watching VN and Chinese coming to run business over us...Oh, poor Cambodians and out children from generation to generation. Note jumping up to get the post in power is to start with military first. HUN SEN from the beginning was not awarded his post by election but by this achievements in military affairs using guns and armed forces. When his son is promoted under the military aspect, there will be no doubt it is a sign of successor from HUN SEN. I don't trust all words of HUN SEN. Before trusting his words, we have to think deeply from word to word and link those considerations to the related backgrounds and excuses he had made last time. Example, during the war of words with Thai government, he arranged military rehearsal. Why that time? The reason was to show Thai that he was not afraid of Thai but by his words he said Training his military soldiers so that they did not forget their military lessons. Hun Sen is good at making reactions or excuses against criticism but not consideration and open solutions. Example, reports from Human Rights, he didn't study on their fact-findings, consider recommendations and solutions, in tern, he wanted to close its office. Disappointment from HR envoy, he did not grasp what it was reported during HR envoy's visit but was caught by the disappointment issue....Lots of things happen in the same way and style of Hun Sen until even children can guess what Hun Sen's gesture in politics is like. He is very tricky and always hides something black inside and behind him. If you are clean, please Cambodians be careful with his words, admiration and luring. He will kick you behind if you are not careful....That is what his natural talent has taught him. I always spend time to watch and listen to his speech on TV....He is always good at making speech even with all activities, gestures, sound, facial expression and style of speaking. Of course, Cambodian wants to change the regime. But how? Who can help? We don't want our country to be plagued by Hunsenism in such too long period. Hun Sen already declared until 2022 - that means until he is probably 72 years old, and then his son continues for another 72 years and the next is his grandson.....How poor! What I don't like about the regime is corruption, bribery, partnerism, unemployment, freedom of expression...I remember I was fined by traffic police so many times which all cases were too far to be accepted. My mother gave me R10,000 for school picket but I was fined by the police of R10,000. They were extorting me when I suppose it was not from R2,000 to R3,000 as I read in the traffic law. Police, RCAF, MP and other authorities in power are always seeking excuse to extort ordinary people for money. But if you are one of them and know anyone of them, you have no problem. If the world also feels poor about Cambodians, please help us.....Please......Please help us survive in more advancement than this.....Please HELP!!! Please put any pressure on the government to change something which provide real advantage to the common people more than himself and his officers....Please the World HELP!!!
