Prime Minister Hun Sen lashed out at opposition figures on Wednesday who criticised the country’s celebration of January 7 as a day of liberation from the Khmer Rouge, again emphasising the importance of the day in Cambodian history.
Speaking at a high school inauguration in Kampong Cham’s Memot district two days ahead of the national holiday, the premier claimed all criticisms of the event were motivated by politics.
“I would like to say that January 7 liberated everything, including ghosts and evil spirits and even liberated the heads of those who are cursing January 7,” Hun Sen said.
The holiday, commemorating the anniversary of the overthrow of the Khmer Rouge by the Vietnamese army in 1979, prompts an annual debate in Cambodia about the extent of Vietnamese influence that was ushered in by the event.
After Pol Pot’s overthrow, Vietnamese troops remained in Cambodia, battling resistance factions including remnants of the Khmer Rouge, until their withdrawal in September 1989.
But Hun Sen said that if there was no January 7, there would be no Khmer Rouge tribunal and the country would not have made any progress.
“Those who consider January 7 as their enemy, would they dare say if there was a genocidal regime of Pol Pot or not?” Hun Sen said.
Ke Sovannroth, secretary general of the opposition Sam Rainsy Party, said that the SRP did not consider the day as one of liberation, seeing it rather as the birthday of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party – the successor of the communist People’s Revolutionary Party of Kampuchea that took power in 1979.
She said the country should instead mark the anniversary of the 1991 Paris Peace Accords as the day of the country’s liberation.
“We do not welcome this celebration,” Ke Sovannroth said.
“We consider only the October 23, 1991, peace agreement as the day that brought an end to the country’s disputes and brought development.”
Hun Sen said, however, that without the toppling of the Khmer Rouge, the Paris Peace Accords would never have been signed.
“I would like to put the question at this point: If Pol Pot had continued to have power until 1991, would Pol Pot [have] agreed to sign it?” he said.

01/07th/1979 Saved lots Cambodian life, including my relatives, one of my relative when to VN in 1975 then he was joined with VN soldier, he was fight KR at the end, also he got the honor with his sacrfile for life.
It depends on how you look at it; January 7th can be viewed as a day of either invasion or liberation. There is no doubt that the viet invaded Cambodia on that day and some people think that the aftermath of the invasion was the liberation.
In the grand scheme of thing, however, we should ask ourselves the bigger question whether the liberation was in fact the pretext for the invasion? To take it a step further, if liberation was the intiontion then how come the viets did not widthraw from Cambodia voluntarily? Only after suffering huge casualties did the viets withdraw from Cambodia in the early 1990s.
Thus we can conclude that the viets manipulated the situation in Cambodia and used liberation as the excuse for the invasion.

Only uneducated people think January 7 as a liberation day. there is no free lunch in this world. yuon has its own agenda and interest to invade cambodia: first to protect its own border security frequently attacked by the khmer Rouge, Second to place cambodia as its saterlite state like Laos,and third to fullfiel Ho Chi Minh's dream of future Indochina federation under Hanoi control such as former Soviet Union under Moscow. In political scientist term, invasion and humanitarian intervention can put to test for january 7th. Did Vietnam honestly come to liberate Khmer when they saw PolPot killed Khmer? based on what we have seen from the past to present day, Vietnam did not come to liberate Khmer from the killing field but to invade and colonize Cambodia. Thus, there is no humanitarian intervention on January 7th, but the full invasion .
Hun Sen has more Crimes than any other in Cambodia' history.
His Crime as follows :
1)- Brought Yuon to Invade Cambodia.
2)- Created K-5 plan.(Aprox. 600,000 Killed)
3)- Bombast in front of the old ASS.
4)- Coup D'etat 1997 (Aprox. 13,000 Killed)
5)- Koh Pich Murder (Aprox 400 Killed)
6)- Cut land to Yuon Enemy
All these crimes are enough evidences for International Prosecution.
I ask all khmer to file International lawsuit against Hun Sen for his "Axis of Evil" on Khmer People. And make The CASE "OO4" for KRT. backed by United Nation.

Vietnam reason to invade Cambodia to drive out the Khmer Rouge was irrelevence. The deaths of Cambodian was no important to Hanoi. The more Cambodian die, the easier it would be for the invasion. Hanoi impatience had clouded their judgement. They have miscalculated the timing of the invasion. If Hanoi had just waited a little longer, Khmer Rouge would killed more Cambodians and the taking over of Cambodia would have been a lot easier. Either way, the dirty job was done and the opportunity Hanoi had been waiting for so long had finally presented itself, and what an opportunity it was. It was almost like a perfect plan. HMMMM..........

Does it really matter what January 7 brings for Cambodian people?
For me January 7 is the day when communists killed each other! After the communists killed each other and Cambodia was occupied by another communists! As you can see the situation for Cambodia never change! From one communist to another communist!
