Q: Cambodia and Thailand engaged in armed conflicts in their border area lately. What role has China played in easing the tension? It is learned that the Security Council will hold a meeting on 14th to discuss the border situation between Cambodia and Thailand. Cambodia hopes the UN will send troops to the border area. What is your attitude on the involvement of the Security Council and the UN sending peace-keeping troops to the border area?
A: Both Cambodia and Thailand are friendly neighbors of China. Since the start of the conflicts, China has stayed in close contact with both sides and pushed for settlement of the dispute through consultation between them. China calls on both sides to keep calm and exercise restraint so as to avoid further escalation of the situation.
On your second question, we have taken note of the reports and will stay in communication with all relevant parties.

Do not let ethnic differences be the cause of disunity among the Khmer nation, particularly, in time of facing external threats as now.
Most Khmers are racially mixed as a result of centuries of interbreeding with other races, not least ethnic Chinese. Dark skinned or light skinned Khmers are no proofs of their racial purity or impurity. There are plenty of rural and urban Khmer families where most members are light brown of complexion, and then often we come across the odd member who is light skinned! And no, his/her parent had not had an affair with a light-skinned person - it's just that the racial melting pot of the parents themselves has retained, and from time to time releases, its eclectic and diluted constituents through DNA line across time and generations. Well, if in doubt, consult biologists on this.
Anyway, there should not be room for racial discord within the Cambodian community after what Khmer people - whatever their complexion or skin colour - have been through over the last 40 years, particularly, the racial xenophobia of Pol Pot's cum Saloth Sar's 'Original Khmer' politics in the 1970s.
Cambodia should be tolerant and embracing culturally or ethnically, but not to the point of being overwhelmed by any other country's hegemony or political influence. All Khmers - wherever they may be - are entitled to have a say in their home land's destiny and to have a meaningful input into the national rebuilding process. To stir up racial discord within the national community now is not what Cambodia needs at all.
As for China's foreign policy, I doubt very much if ethnic overseas Chinese have any sway on China's calculations, and Beijing turning a blind eye on Pol Pot's killings of ethnic Chinese in Cambodia was a case in point. More importantly, the onus is on Cambodians to carefully manage their country's political tie with China for their own people's security and benefit, rather than blaming or fearing Chinese influence due to unhappy past experiences via this relationship. Cambodia needs China more than China needs Cambodia, especially, in light of Cambodia's immediate neighbours and their expansionist designs towards her.
Hopefully, China (and Russia) can assist Cambodia a bit more in modernising her armed defence - it's what is really needed to balance things out in South East Asia and thus securing long term stability and growth which are the ultimate targets of China in her quest to rival other world economic super powers.
I think the poster(s) who promote ethnic confrontation hin this forum are yuon agents. Yuons hate China, because without China they would have swallowed Cambodia during when America lost the war in Indochina. Till today, China has been obstacle to Vietnam's expansioniste goal. That's why yuons hate China so much and they try to create division between Khmer and Chinese Khmer ethnics.
