Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said Wednesday the promotion of industrial sectors will be necessary to ensure the sustainable development of Cambodian economic growth.
"There is an urgent need for Cambodia to modernize its economy through promoting the development of industrial sector in order to achieve a sustainable growth," he said during opening the fourth Cambodian Economic Forum.
Cambodia's economic growth was 5.5 percent in 2010 thanks to garment manufacture, tourism and agriculture, he said, adding that the growth this year could be more than 6 percent.
The premier said that the development of the industrial sectors should be focused on capturing more value added of existing core sectors such as in garment industry through establishing raw material factories such as a buttons manufacturing factory and in agriculture via building processing plants.
Also on Cambodia's emerging industries such as furniture, handicrafts, paper/recycled paper, construction materials, household appliances, simple electronic equipment, oil and gas, mineral ores and fertilizer, he said.
"These industries need to be closely studied to assess whether they can be competitive in the domestic and export markets," he said.
"I am confident that Cambodia now has appropriate favorable conditions to move forward to the next higher development stage," he said.
Qimiao Fan, Country Manager of the World Bank-Cambodia, said during the opening ceremony that Cambodia has abundant land favorable for agriculture, tourism development, mining biodiversity conservation, housing, urbanization and infrastructure.
"With these potentials, Cambodia still lags in terms of skills - - both soft skills like attitude to work and technical skills," he said.
The two-day forum was under the theme "Cambodian Economy in post-crisis environment: industrial policy -- option toward a sustainable development".
It was attended by some 500, who are government's policy makers, economists, development partners, World Bank, Asian Development Bank and United Nations Development Program.

Cambodia needs good schools, Colleges, and Universities! Also Cambodia needs cheap electricity to jump start light, medium, and heavy industries!
Cambodia will get all that if get rid of Hun and Corrupted CCP. this "dictatraitorship" it not good for the country. Khmer should do better if as today. This 2 clown screw it up Hun and Ranaritt.
this is what going to Happen if Khmer dont changed regime. You have to believe what Hun Sen says, and do what Hun Sen wants.
you can't force a change by using force, you silly people! you demand reform and changes, even with leadership by making term limit law or forever shut up, ok! remember violence don't solve violence! why are they complaining here? cambodia has no term limit law, stupid! introduce to cambodia the term limit law, that should solve this so called staying in power forever or same people run the country, etc, ok! otherwise, stop whining here, ok!
If Cambodia has changed its leader there will be a lot of growth. We can't be stuck with same idea of those old farts CPP clans.
Khmer Inside,
are are crazy, ignorant, stupid, outdated thinking people talking about whining and bitching here, don't they know there is no term limit law in cambodia now! can't use force to oust or remove leaders, that is stupid in this day and age, really! not wise at all to think like think! they should introduce, talk about, debate, etc about making athe term limit law for cambodia. this would solve many so-called internal fighting for power, position, etc, etc, the law will prevent people from going back to the dark age era when people were fighting for power, position, etc by force, violence, and so on! i think term limit law should be discuss in cambodia in this century because it will help settle the so-called power hungry and fighting each other for power and position and so forth, ok! think about it! make it an exception to the rule, etc... it's key to solve many conflict in cambodia, really! of course, there are more to cambodia than you and i, really!
"With these potentials, Cambodia still lags in terms of skills - - both soft skills like attitude to work and technical skills,"
Does this mean that Khmer people are lazy since their soft skill like attitute to work is lagging?
Hey stupid 11:57PM!
We're aware of term limits! Why every election this guy HUN SEN frauds cheats, scams, steals vote every time when there was election going on. Look at Egypt, the reason why people ousted or overthrew Mubarak because this guy (Mubarak) stole vote counts all the time and people if there is election there is no way that they can't remove this guy because he always have way of winning the election just like HUN SEN. So people got fed-up and have to go to the street.
Khmer Inside,
12:08 AM, yes they are lazy and stupid too. In comparision to Chinese or Vietnamese or the Thais, Cambodians are about 100 years behind when it comes to attitude to work. Cambodians themselves don't see this as a problem so instead they prefer to blame someone else for all their problems where in fact their lazyness and stupidity is the actual problems making them way behind other countries when it comes to productivity. Until they change their attitudes, their country will always stay behind.
NOTHING CHANGE!
Battambang: flip flop
Phnom Bich: flip flop
much of khmer attitude has a lot to do with it! yes, attitude seems like 100 years behind most other regional countries. and their sympathizers are supporting this bad habit! unless they reformed their attitude too e.g. learned, be wised to change, learn to adopt and adapt to new way, new system, etc, they will be 100 years behind time, really! but don't worry, when those individuals died, they will take their bad attitude with them to the grave, thank god.
i always say smart and wise people learn from others better countries and better attitude people out there, the stupid ones are the one that don't learn at all, you know!
to me, attitude like that shows the lack of ecudcaton, of exposure to the bigger world view out there, shows the ignorance side of human being, etc, etc... it is time for khmer people from all walks of life to wake up and be enlightened by learning from the bigger world out there! stop being timid, afraid or limit your dream, your vision, your education, your curiosity, your thirst for worldly knowledge, etc, etc, ok! or khmer will stay behind siem, youn, chinese, etc forever! wake up and be educated without limit, ok! have the thirst for knowledge is my advice for khmer people from all walks of life. and get rid of that bad attitude that serves nothing useful for the country. leave your bad attitude to yourself, ok! god bless cambodia.
