A number of overseas Cambodian intellectuals researched and wrote that Cambodian is a race that is on the verge of extinction.
They based their claims on a number of facts, but nobody dare to speak directly due to a number of factors that could affect them personally.
What do these Cambodian-American intellectuals base their facts on? From Washington DC, Hassan is providing a short report on an article prepared by a former US university professor that will be presented at a meeting in France next month.
What former Economic professor Tith Naranhkiri writes for his seminar in France to be held in May 2011, some Cambodians may think that he wrote without knowing Cambodia too well, either that or he was writing in order to scorn his own race. In fact Dr. Tith’s writing reflects that he is a Cambodian who studied and now lives overseas, and it also shows his concerns for the future of the Cambodian people, a race that is inferior to their neighbors for a long period of time. Dr. Tith Naranhkiri used to teach at John Hopkins University and he used to work for the IMF in Washington DC, USA.
Cambodians do not understand the Viet strategy and they have many internal conflicts
Dr. Tith Naranhkiri raised a number of issues showing why Cambodia remained under the inevitable influence of Vietnam. These include the fact that Cambodians do not look deeply into the Vietnamese strategy: Vietnam maintains order and rule, Vietnam knows how to organize the ruling institution, and it also holds a long vision into the future, etc… As for the Cambodians, they have a lot of internal enemies, their society is weak and they can never respond quick enough to any change.
Furthermore, he said that there is also the issue of the king who assumes a very heavy and dangerous burden for the dictatorial regime – a regime that irresponsible, that is immoral, that is selfish, a regime whose leaders only think about their own interest. The Cambodian administration is filled with high ranking officials at the top, but it lacks middle men below them. The law and justice are unclear and high ranking officials can say whatever they want as long as they do not get involved in lese-majesty. Cambodia’s borders with neighboring countries are not well delimited. Officials’ promotion is not done based on merit and knowledge, but it is rather done through family and clan ties, through praises heaped on higher ranking officials. These are all traits that the Vietnamese do not follow, quite contrary to their Cambodians counterpart.
Barbaric and not advanced
Dr. Tith Naranhkiri quoted a Vietnamese author, Nguyen The Anh, who claimed that Cambodian is a race that is not very advanced, a race that is barbaric. Yang Bao Yun, a Chinese intellectual, and French author Jean de la Croix (known in Chinese as Joao da Cruz), wrote on the Vietnamese expansion, starting from the Annamite Nguyen dynasty in 1670. Based on these last two authors, Champa was the first kingdom that fell victim to this Viet expansion. Dr. Tith also brought up a number of examples involving the loss of [Cambodia’s] national sovereignty in subsequent years, and through them, he views that Cambodia is placed under the hidden yoke of the Vietnamese Imperialism and Communism with the tacit support of former hero-king Norodom Sihanouk and prime minister Hun Xen: first through the tight alliance between the ex-hero-king and North Vietnam, and second through the tight alliance between the hero-king and the Khmer Rouge, as well as the tight alliance between the ex-king and Hun Xen.
Dr. Tith Naranhkiri indicated that, since the day Vietnam invaded and occupied Cambodia in order to topple the Khmer Rouge regime, the Hanoi regime had taken all means to put into application its ethnicide or ethnocide policy, i.e. the elimination of a race through the destruction of its culture.

Every Cambodian generation still live in the dream of the past – Angkor’s era.
You cannot drive forward by constantly looking back into the rearview mirror.
Anybody can create their own theory in the past. I have not seen the strategies how to deal with these issus. what I want to know is how to deal with the problem by not create a pestimestic to the readers.

He shoots straight and he doesn't beat around the bush. He knows Cambodian history better than anyone I have met in my entire life. Professionally, he has achieved it all - second to none and at international level. I hope that younger generations will find his works useful as it may broadening their knowledge on our flawed characters in many ways he laid out in his critics.
Stupid. First, Cambodian is not a race, Asian is. Second, many ethnicities such as Khmers, Chinese, Vietnamese make up Cambodian, and Khmers are the majority group. Researches show that up to 90% of Cambodians are Khmers. Third, Khmers only go extinct if your families, my families, Sam Rainsy and his supporters' families all marry to Vietnamese or Thais. Fourth, Naranhkiri is an economist, so he's not in position to tell us about social issue. He can sticks to the market and economy where he knows more. I doubt how often this guy goes to Cambodia to know anything. And to any hater, please do research on what I talked about before showing your stupidity.
PROBLEMS WITH CAMBODIANS:
(1) Cambodians throughout history are so pathetically gullible to any type of rumor & propaganda.
(2) This distinct Cambodian mixture of Buddhism and folk religion has made many Cambodians heavily reliant on the belief of superstitions rather than scientific and logical knowledge. They would rather depend on "make-belief" and "lucky charms" rather than actually getting off their asses and solve the damn problem.
(3) Cambodians are extremely "passive-aggressive" when it comes to confronting their problems and facing challenge.
(4) Cambodians seem to only yearn for the past but never really get their ass to fight for a better future.
(5) Cambodians can never get along with one another. They can't unite. When they try to unite, there is always a problem within the leadership and factionalism within the mass.... this causes everything to become weaken collapse.
(6) They become so extremely jealous of their own neighbors, family members and friends.
(7) The belief of "god-king" within a personality. This was done to Sihanouk and also now with Hun Sen.
(8) Always blaming others, but never themselves.
I like his analizing style, so far as my opservation Cambodian internal conflict when we look back then 1954 and beyond, he got a reliable source of informations how Cambodian leaders mentally lead the county politically compar to the neigbering countries. The leaders mental political ego von't ever be found indepandent from the influent the neigbuors at least some signe of change. His analized is unic in style I like it but there is one of his word I would like to correct is EXTICNTION to Minority, because as you see nowaday in Cambodia Viet & Chin control all economic sectors, then they raiser their children more better than Khmer poor famers who are desperitly strogling to find food for daily survival.

You, sir, please tune down your rhetoric. Please use words wisely. An insult is the weapon of the ignorant and not of a scholar. You claimed to have done your research. However, you seem very complacent with the notion that it is okay for the Vietnamese to take Khmer land because you said Cambodia is made up of Khmers, Chinese, and Vietnamese, etc.
We Khmers know more than you think now. We cannot be fooled that easily. Even the ex-king Sihaknu knows that we no longer believe his lie. He was duped by Ho Chi Minh and his Vietnamese mother-in-law. Khmers were duped by him. That is why Vietnamese has the upper hand now. But, all that is about to change. Dr. Tith, if Khmer people are going to be extinction -- do you have any workable solution to divert the path! I want to repeat myself here... the workable solution given the environment in Cambodia. I will not hold your children responsibility to rebuild Khmer land, butr I hold you responsible fo help Khmer the way you know how! As you well have many experience of doing your research, especially in economics - your outcome need to be statistically significant, thus, in this case you can apply your scholarship to result Khmer problems. i know Dr Tith personally so i know he has a genuine concern for our people. i also know of his un compromising stance against corruption - right after the UN 1993 elections he has been courted personally by N Ranariddh to lead a high level think tank on national development, a post that he quickly turned down when he learned what was behind that facade. Having said that, i disagree with Dr Tith on race issues and how best to protect khmer national interest. If you exclude certain people from participating in the economy on the basis of their skin colour or language, you are putting a handicap on Cambodia's stock of human capital. every body knows it: Khmers and Vietnamese and everyone else eat and sh*t the same way. Why not take a positive attitude towards all minorities? Right now, our people have a lot to lose from South Koreans and new-arrival chinese (and other ex-pats) who are abusing our weak fiscal & institutional supertructure in their business dealings. No one is ringing an alarm bell here when we all should.

Sometimes, you can think of other country where you were born, you are not proud to be who you are in that country.
For examples, some Vietnamese people who live in the U.S. and who were born in the U.S. would think that it is a shame to be born as American, but those persons might have done something very bad and committed criminal for the U.S. and those persons were punished and put in jail. I left Cambodia in 1979 not because I like to run away from my country of my birth. But I have to force myself to run because Hun sen brought Vietnam with them to kill Cambodian. In 1979, Vietnam has brought millions of handcuffs to Cambodia? What those handcuffs were for? How many people have seen those handcuffs in Battambang? So please do not label people in overseas for betraying their Nation. Without these vietcong slaves, we wouldn't run at all. After 1991 peace agreement, Sok Kong shouldn't be in Cambodia at all because he was one of Vietnamese military expert. If he could stay in Cambodia, how many more vietnamese army are still in Cambodia? Where is the removal of all foreign troops in Cambodia? Who has monitor this removal?

I am very proud to be born as a Cambodian. Regardless where is my nationality at present, my birth is still being recorded in my passport as from Cambodia.
I am also not a racist. But I am very aware of ethnic cleansing by Vietcong in Cambodia through their agents within Khmer Rouge organisation.
You can ask every khmer victim of between 1975-1979, from Battambang to Pursat, These khmer rouge agents working for Vietcong wanted to kill all Cambodian through poisoning noodles before Vietnam army arrive.

This is just an article by an RFA reporter, not the actual analysis of Dr. Tith itself. But even by reading this article, most of Dr. Tith's claims are nothing new, it has been made by many people before. But what puzzles me is that the claims here have not been backed up by any proof and evidences, they are just Dr. Tith's claims, nothing else. I also agreed with the commenter above that Dr. Tith is an economist, he is not a historian or a philanthropist, so how much does he know about the Khmer race or how much research in philanthropy and Khmer ethnocentricity did he do? I doubt he did much research, but just make an assumption without concrete evidences to substantiate his claims. This is not academic, but a piece of opinion and assumptions only.

We never like to work with one another unless we profit from it. The Viets don't do this. This is the difference between us and them. This is why the Viets continue to succeed and we are the pieces of shit of Southeast Asia. Khmers need to stop being so damn ignorant and start to learn and adapt.

i think the former professor is writing based on his personal view and bias and hate and even scornful view of cambodia. you know, it is his personal opinion, maybe drew from history of cambodia and youn from during the dark ages, etc. however, i think cambodia today is a lot different as i like to call it a new cambodia and new era for cambodia. i think individuals like dr. narankhiri have a lot of bitter view or negative view on cambodia and our khmer people, not good. well, fortunately, it is his opinion only. i think people need to have a paradigm shift because as time goes on, cambodia too must reform and adjust to the changing world as well. of course, there are some aspect of cambodia as a nation that we all should help to preserve and conserve, even the natural environment and so forth. it is smart and wise and clever for cambodia and our educated leaders to view cambodia as a new beginning, new era which isn't all that gloomy and doomy and so forth, really! like in nature, too, those who can adjust and reform and accommodate, adapt, adopt, etc, etc will survive i.e. survival of the fittest or the strongest, you know! so, wake up and be smarter and wiser and do learn from everybody in the world, ok! may god bless cambodia and all our beautiful, intelligent khmer people and citizens.
This ex-professor is a loose canon, who more often than not would shoot any thing out of his mouth.
He is another typical expat with complex personality. His self-righteous and am-better-than-you attitude often puts him at odd with other fellow Khmers.

Yes, Cambodia was under the hidden yoke of Vietnam. But Vietnam did not make any alliance with Sihanouk or Hun Sen. Indeed, Hanoi installed Hun Sen as a puppet leader to serve its interest, and eventually to swallow the whole Khmer Nation. The relationship between Hanoi and Hun Sen is between the master and servant not between friend and friend or ally and ally. Hun Sen fallows all Hanoi orders without condition.

After 500 years,we Khmer have not come to grip with the situation. We are forever fighting neither the Thai/Siam or the Vietnamese. We have lost half of our territory .Can we move on ?
Cambodia and Japan are the only 2 countries on this planet which have a 90%plus of one ethenic group. We have a unique culture and the world at large have come to admire and appreciate more and more of our ancestor's legacy. We are the Rome of South East Asia.
We are as capable as anybody else. Can we just concentrate on building and strenghtening the economy and educating the next generation of our people. we all accept all race of people who embraced the Khmer culture and speak Khmer are Khmer regardless of his or her ethnicity or background. We must trying to think beyond the Thai or the Vietnamese. How about the Chinese? they all share borders as well. So you think only Cambodia is in the shit.......

This kind of utter culture should not only reject by Khmer but also all people who still consider themselves as human race with dignity and value. I appreciate Dr Tith for his initiative, courage and honesty to speak out the truth to denounce yuon culture and policy of atrocity and ethnocide against people who are not yuons in Asia. As a man of culture and dignity, it is his duty and responsibility to argue against yuon atrociousness to defend human society and value. Contrary, if he did nothing against this kind of crime and injustice, he will die with shame and guilt as average nothing man.

With 12 million people and one of the poorest nation in SE Asia. With attitude such as12.40 above,there is not much hope for Cambodia. we can feel the hatre and bigotry - the same sort of the KR kind displayed here. No rational argument here,just hissing foul language.must be because of low level of education. The Khmer empire will never be resurrected as long as we have Khmer people like the 12:40 kind.you must understand that your rivals are smart,better equipped and 8 times bigger in number. They had tested themselves against the mighty US war machine.

Many thank to professor and Dr. Narahkiri TITH for his seminar which will take place in France this sunday 1st May 2011. I'm looking forward to hearing him at this seminar. I've visited his site, "my professional background", it was a real pleasure. I've appreciated very much his following quote, "if one person is totally committed to the defense of the principles of justice, dignity, and freedom, he or she can do a lot to change any thing in this world". This quote, everyone shall "constantly, constantly and constantly" keep it in mind for a real happiness of man kind.

Khmer can never agree on anything. Khmer never accept their faults but always blame. Khmer is always in the shit holes which they have created by inviting, giving reasons for their neighbors to invade. It was our kings who invited the Siem or the Yuon to come to fight among ourselves to be kings. It was KR who crossed borders(legit or not), attacked & gave reasons for the Yuon to invade. Why can't we blame ourselves first?
