OPPOSITION leader Sam Rainsy has accused the Human Rights Party of trying to “break” his own Sam Rainsy Party and steal its members, even as the two parties remain in talks about a potential merger.
In a letter dated Monday, HRP president Kem Sokha wrote to Sam Rainsy to inquire about the terms of such a merger, which has been under discussion for months. Kem Sokha asked whether Sam Rainsy supported an option entailing the merger of the HRP and SRP under a new banner, or a second option in which the SRP would subsume the HRP.
“We support the first option and see that this is an opportunity for a union of patriots and democrats to arrange a democratic movement for change,” Kem Sokha wrote.
In response, however, Sam Rainsy wrote in a letter to his own supporters that the HRP was using the same “tricks” employed by the ruling Cambodian People’s Party to undermine the SRP and induce defections.
Sam Rainsy has lived abroad since 2009 to avoid a lengthy jail term handed down against him last year in connection with a protest he staged along the Kingdom’s eastern border against alleged Vietnamese encroachment. In recent weeks, Kem Sokha has appealed for SRP members to join the HRP, declaring last month that “the HRP will become the biggest opposition party in Cambodia if Sam Rainsy cannot return”.
Such rhetoric, Sam Rainsy said in his letter, is counterproductive in the face of the parties’ merger talks.
“Before choosing any FORMULA for a union, we must first show the required SPIRIT for a genuine and sincere union,” Sam Rainsy wrote.
“In fact, by adopting the CPP’s attitude toward us, the HRP is - willingly or not - serving the CPP interest and they have become a CPP de facto ally, at a time when the SRP is the main target for the CPP in the face of very serious national problems.”
In the 2008 national elections, the SRP won 26 seats while the HRP netted just three. Both opposition parties were dwarfed by the ruling party, which won 90 seats in parliament and serves as an effective rubber stamp for Prime Minister Hun Sen.
During a visit to the Kingdom last year, United States secretary of state Hillary Clinton encouraged the SRP and HRP to put aside their differences and form a united opposition against the ruling party.

Most Cambodian that involve in politic as politicians in Cambodia because they are try to get better position in government and plus better chance of corruption to gain millions of US dollars. That is the only one purpose of most politicians in Cambodia.

Examples:
Prince Norodom Ranariddh and Funcinpec Party, from 1979 to 1993, how many Khmer lives were dying or lost their limbs because of they believe in Dr. Prince Norodom Ranariddh and his Funcinpec Party. They were carry guns, bombs to fight with Vietnam. They don’t even have salary or proper foods. They were fighting because they believe they would have better chance to have better future as they promised them during they were using them as tool to gain power in serve their politic goal.
As they won the election 1993, Funcinpec Party and the party leaders slowly forget them and their suffering in severing Ranariddh and Funcinpec politics goal and purposes. They (disable veterans of war) lived like animals bag people for money on the street but the majority of top Funcinpec Party are living in Luxury lifestyle practice their European lifestyle and their Royal lifestyle. The disable veterans that were serve them before can’t even meet them ask for their charity because they simply have forgotten and order their bodyguard push them away like animals.
1997 Thousand of Khmer lives again were dying for serving Ranariddh and Funcinpec Party leaders but they have been simply forgotten by Dr. Ranariddh and Funcinpec Party again and again. They were dying for the sake of serving politic lead by the politicians as mention above.
So the question is “Are you Khmer people willing to die for they can be rich and famous and you be forgotten?”

In democratic fashion, no one can stop people from changing from one party into another unless their own party has a clear policy which meet with people expectation and people interest. When you call yourself as a Nationalist party, you need to scarify yourself as a role model of others before other pay their loyalty to you. Indeed these two parties shall not take that long to talk for working together.
The discussions should be divided into two steps.
1-Policy: Each party must put all their policies on the table. They have to collect all their common goals and try to extend as much they can to accommodate their different so that they can work together with harmony.
2-Power sharing if they can be elected as government.
A-Prime Minister position and deputy prime Minister
B-Ministerial positions.
C-Political appointment positions such;
a-Government officials such as State secretaries, Deputies State secretaries.
b-Local government governors
c-Overseas posts such as Ambassadors, Consulate General and consul staffs.
d-State enterprises: Board members, Directors of electricity board, National rails, TV stations, Radio, Banks, Water distribution, Transportations authority etc.. and etc.. which covered at least about 5000 positions.
Therefore each party could have quite a numbers of positions for their quota if they are elected.

I agree with Areak Prey. Let's focus changing the country. So what if Kem and Saim don't agree with each other. Let them sit in the room and argue until the cow come home. But, we the khmer people, shouldn't ! We can united ourself and pick a new leader to lead us. To me, uniting two into parties into one is easy task, comparing to run the country, with thousand of interest groups influences. I've admired Sam Rainsy for always fighting against Youn invaders who now represent 33% of the 14 millions people in Cambodia, while Khmers are 55% only (go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnic_groups_in_Cambodia).

It is time, Mr Sam Ransy has to decide for a reform in his party and re-shaft his party by endorsing Madam Mu Sochua as a new leader to lead for next campaign. If Mr Sam Ransy is still not recognize about the fallout of his party if his party is going to campaign without a leader. It will be noway his party can win any big support if he let his party to run without a leader inside the country. People have lost all his credibility if he is not staying in the country regardless what he has declared recently what he can do outside. The outside job is only for foreign Minister or a spokesperson of his party for foreign affairs and not for a leader. A leader must be a true leader and must stay with people. If he scares to stay in Cambodia, the leadership will not suitable for him.
Recently Madam Mu Sochua has proved herself as a true leader and it is time for this party to transfer their leadership. Please do not have wrong judgment on me. Rumour has circled that Mr Sam rainsy had a child with someone from Battambang, which has caused the couple growing apart: (see the Saumura interview given to Phnom-Penh Post in http://ki-media.blogspot.com/2007/05/tioulong-saumura-politician.html).
If the rumour turns out to be true, in my opinion, Mr Sam Rainsy is under pressure by "who?" to live outside Cambodia, which neutralizes him taking part in the next election.
As a good and trustworthy husband, Mr Sam Rainsy whose record of competence, patriotism, integrity, fighter is undeniable, may have no guts to confront this issue.
I beg him to reject the blackmail, to clarify the above rumour, and whatever the outcome, I am sure that khmer people keep trusting him, supporting him and wanting him to lead the party and reform it from top to bottom too.
