Cambodia sees spike in lightning deaths

PHNOM PENH — Lightning strikes have killed 56 Cambodians so far this year, twice as many as over the same period last year, an official said Thursday, blaming an early start to the rainy season.

Just 27 people were struck dead by lightning in the first five months of 2010, when 114 were killed over the whole year, according to the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM).

Unusually early rain fall this year had contributed to the rise in fatalities, NCDM spokesman Keo Vy told AFP.

"This may be related to the rain that started in early February this year, compared to April last year," he said. Cambodia's rainy season normally runs from May to October.

"Many people are more scared than ever of lightning strikes because they just happen more often," Keo Vy added.

Lightning deaths happen every year in Cambodia, especially in rural areas.

Many of the victims have been farmers and the government has warned people to stay indoors during storms.

Keo Vy said the government couldn't afford to distribute lightning rods but it had distributed information pamphlets to help communities in areas prone to lightning strikes.

"It's a natural disaster happening in other countries as well, but Cambodia can't afford advanced equipment to (protect against) lightning strikes yet."

The curses are working, but they are hitting the wrong people.

The government prefers the loss of lives, rather than spending the money to protect their people.

The people MUST be educated about the killing electrical storm (lightning).

I still surprise how some people, especially children, enjoy playing and working during rain. The worst-case scenario is that these people are staying beneath trees.

Again, the people must understand how lighting strike, and what to do to avoid this electrical lighting.

We have been struck many times (on the wings of our aircraft)when we were en route on our overseas (int'l)flight plan.

FYI: Lightning (electronical storm) is always associated with thunderstorm.

Education is the key to reduce the number of lighting death. Of course, education will unequivocally cost money, and that the problem with the government.

Learning how to protect from lightning is not difficult without the need of extreme education. It takes a little time as 5 minutes to teach and to learn. Like some said the life of the ordinary khmer citizen who toil in the rain for the benefit of the wealthy in the city is not important. The leaders like Dr. Hun Sen and Dr. Hun Sen Bun Rany are either careless or illiterate. The eletrical current of high volatage takes place in the sky as the air of element bounce to one another in great force. This current is looking for the ground to land. Sometimes it lands on human. So the idea is to bypass the electrical current so that it land on the ground instead of on the human.

Avoiding lightning:

First and foremost, ensure that you're surrounding with metal. For instance, if you're driving ensure that part of your body touches the metal part. If you have mobile phone, please it, or perhaps try eating using metal folk and spoon and knife for even more effective. And that's how you ward off lightning.

anyway, people should do something about it to curb this. how about build more lightening rods which were invented by the american statesman, benjamin franklin. cambodia needs more lightening rods to help this situation all over the country, really! everyone of us can help to make a real difference in regards to this, really! start research and do something to help, please, for god sake!
