HRP-SRP merger evaluated

The Kingdom’s two main opposition parties yesterday expressed willingness to continue merger talks following claims by Prime Minister Hun Sen that he has possession of additional secret documents that could further split the parties apart.

Hun Sen suggested on Monday that he was willing to disclose documentation of secret meetings with opposition leader Sam Rainsy.

The premier’s comments came after the Sam Rainsy Party appeared to call off all chances of an opposition merger after a 2007 conversation between Hun Sen and Kem Sokha, president of the Human Rights Party, was leaked.

Kem Sokha can be heard in the taped 2007 conversation asking for Hun Sen’s assistance in securing Olympic Stadium as a site for a party meeting. Hun Sen apparently suggested that Kem Sokha should “grab” some SRP members.

Pol Ham, spokesman for the HRP, said yesterday that Hun Sen’s warning that additional leaks could be on the way was merely part of a strategy designed to avert any possible competition from a merged opposition.

On whether the HRP favoured a merger, however, he said: “Under the shoulder of the SRP, under the structure of the SRP, we cannot accept.

“We want to create a big democratic movement that everyone can come to join in a large house,” he said.

“We cannot dissolve our party to live with the SRP.”

Yim Sovann, SRP spokesman, said his party “welcomes the principle of a merger”, despite comments to the contrary last week, as long as it was under the banner of the SRP.

“The principle is that we keep the same name but we divide the work to do from the national level to the grassroots,” he said.

“We cannot pull down a brick house to live in a hut.”

Ou Virak, president of the Cambodian Centre for Human Rights, said yesterday that the two parties could pose a formidable challenge to the ruling CPP, and even win, if they were not impeded by their immaturity.

“I regret that Khmer politicians do not have maturity,” he said. “As I see it, SRP does not seem to want to merge.”

After we found out that Kem Sokha is not a clean person, why do we want to merge ? We started with 0 seat now we have 26 seats without the help HRP .

It is right it does not make any sense to pull down a brick house and live in hut. But are they sure they have a brick house?

smart, wise, enlightened people always learned from their failure, i mean you have to, or you risk failing again and again, really! so think about it, if your political is a minority one, how can you win the majority one? you see, if you don't emerge, then forever, shut up, ok! if the law says it takes 51 to win, then, if you stay as a small, minority group, you have no hope of winning due to your small members, really! so, it's up to these small parties to merge into a bigger, more effective force of one political group. it makes sense, too, you know! i hope they learn from your past failure by now, really! otherwise, they must be stupid, thus, their leadership ability is questionable, really! wake up already, people! there are more to cambodia than you and i, ok! nobody stop you from participating in the national election, however, whether you can win or not is up to the voters to vote for the political party of their choice, ok! stop rankling like the siem thugs did on preah vihear temple, ok! stupid don't learn from stupid, stupid learn from wise people, ok!

Hun Sen seems to successfully discredit Kem Sokha, now he wants to use the same method to destroy Mr. Rainsy- secret meeting. I don't buy communist trick. Hun Sen learn from Viet.

I REALLY DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE CURRENT CRISIS IN MR. KEM SOKHA'S POLITICAL PARTY.
AFTER THE SO-CALLED SECRETE CONVERSATION BETWEEN HUN SEN AND KEM SOKHA CAME OUT TO LIGHT, MR. CHEAM YEAP, THE INNER CIRCLE MAN IN HUN SEN REGIME STATED THAT THE TAPE IS FAKE & MADE BY SOMEONE.

I THINK THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG IF SAM RAISY AND KEM SOKHA CAN JOIN FORCE TO BRING HUN SEN DOWN.

Lok Mom Yin & Ly Diep: I appreciate you as being yourself - a true unique Khmer. Believe in what you are doing, you will succeed!

To all SRP supporters & Khmers: it's time to learn some history. Youns/Viets always paint our Khmer nationalists and then we start biting each other without thinking.

You need to accept the truth that Sam Rainsy's political career almost comes to an end. I appreciate his courage and his commitment to changes, but when comes to Leadership, he is not the most charismatic leader for Cambodia yet.

I invite you to be open-minded and to re-assess all his deeds:
- Changing 2/3 majority to 50%+1 is the biggest mistake to exchange for his return
- Claiming to boycott the 4th-term assembly meeting today and switching to attend the meeting the next day is considered what?...
- Blaming others for not wanting him and SRP to unite with other democratic parties. What his rationale being a leader?
- Dropping case against Hun Xen in the US? Why need to drop?...
- Why running away from your loyal members? Look at MP Mu Sochua. What Hun Xen can do to her?
- SRP needs to solve the internal issues and stop painting the ones who offer the ideas/opinions
- Public debates among all opposition and self-claimed democratic parties should be held publicly and let the public judge.

I'm not a supporter of HRP, SRP and whosoever, but always attend those leaders' meeting. One solution for our nation is to UNITE, UNITE & UNITE. Don't use pretext/excuses.

Please learn to trust with vigilance.

Best Regards to all true Khmers!
