Zhou Yongkang's Recent Visit to Cambodia

Op-Ed By Khmer Academy

With Mr. Zhou Yongkang's recent visit to Cambodia, some supporters of the Cambodian main opposition party (SRP) rightly ask question why China foreign policy makers continue to ignore the relevance of their party in light of swift social changes taking place in the Arab world.

Traditionally, China does not interfere with internal politics of a friendly country, and her relationships with her allies are strictly government to government. SRP needs to adjust its political platform to the China’s reality. Rather than being critical of China-Tibet affairs, Mr. Rainsy needs to prove to China that in the long run, SRP is a more viable alternative to the ruling CPP. Only then, SRP can expect to gain China’s sympathy and eventually recognition.

With all the social changes happening in the Arab world, it is no surprise that China is strengthening the corporation with her key allies close to home. Given the strategic importance of Cambodia, it would be prudent for China to expand her relationship with Cambodia beyond the traditional government-to-government interactions. It would be in China best interest to nurture people-to-people relationship by sponsoring a number of activities such as building local trade schools and healthcare facilities, and funding various Sino-Khmer associations in rural Cambodia. Only strong people-to-people tie can ensure an enduring relationship between the two countries regardless which political formation wins the election in Cambodia.

The author must be someone, who understood very well about the national and international political situation.

Most of the members of the CPP, Sam Rainsy and other Cambodian parties in and outside of Cambodia did not really knew so well the different between national and internal politics of a country.

I lost faith with the blind justice symbol of america. America know how corrupted cpp government is but is not doing enough to help cambodia oppositions and ngos, instead seems to provide more support to the ruling party. Maybe its time to start kissing chinese ass, perhaps this is the only way out of youn control. Kissing chinese ass is better than continue to kiss youn ass.

What the hell are you talking about?
Wasn’t he the one who showed up at Viet border several months ago to protest about the erroneous border posts?
If you and the whole of Cambodian are only half of a man like him, Cambodia would be free of Vietcong.

About the visit of three days of About the official delegation of the Central Committee of Chinese Communist Party headed by Zhou Yongkang in Cambodia, we note that the Chinese Communist Party invites itself directly in the internal politics of Cambodia, by supporting publicly the FUNCINPEC on Cambodian soil to the great displeasure of the other political parties.
We have not yet heard the Chinese Communist Party publicly apologized on Cambodian soil about his responsibility in the genocide of the Cambodian population committed by the ultra-maoist Democratic Kampuchea that Beijing supported from beginning to end and may be even until now.
CPP is an ally of the Vietnam Communist Party, the Chinese Communis Party now chooses to openly support the FUNCINPEC.
It is the classic political rule to divide for better rule used by China.
The CPP is still as powerful without economic aid or against the will of Beijing?Wait and see.
We'll see in 2013 what will FUNCINPEC’s score with the support of Beijing.
This is a turning point in Sino-Khmer relation or rather between the FUNCINPEC and the Chinese Communist Party relation.
The Chinese Communist Party has signed several agreements with Cambodia, including coopération of defense.
Cooperation in defense between Cambodiaand China looks suspiciously like a relationship between the lord and his vassal or between the colonizer and the colonized.
Sino-Cambodian cooperation in the defense has been implemented concretely and diligently that twice during the recent history of Cambodia in which Beijing interests are at stake.

The first time, in the support provided by Beijing to the armed struggle against the Lon Nol Republic supported by the US and the second time in the military support of the Chinese Communists for the Democratic Kampuchea of Pol Pot against Vietnam in the ideological influence war between Communist China and the Soviet union.

In the recent conflict Khmer-Thai, Chinese, whose interests are not in question recommended Cambodia to exercise restraint and use peaceful resolutions and negotiations in front of the Thai military aggression.

It is the Chinese Communist Party who decides what to do for Cambodia. As Chinese Communist Party decided to drop Pol Pot when the international situation changed. Democratic Kampuchea was sacrificed by the Chinese Communist Party for the interests of Beijing.

In both cases, Cambodia had gone out bruised and destroyed. This cooperation in the defense took advantage especially China.
Cambodia lost everything.

The Chinese also asked Cambodia to use the Chinese currency Yuan in the economic relations between both countries. Here, the Chinese have nothing to lose and they have everything to gain becaufe trade with Cambodia is a large surplus in their favor.

Cambodia is a loser because it can not use the Chinese yuan which is undervalued to settle its imports from other countries than China because these imports become extremely expensive, plus the yuan is not convertible outside China and so It is less interesting to have the Yuan as reserve currency.
The only beneficiaries of the use of the Yuan in this bilateral economic exchange are Chinese businessmen and the products made in China.
