Mr. Lon Nol and the republicans tried to tell Khmer illiterates in the country how evil the communist was by radio, tv and dropping tons of flyers but not only no body believed him but some old folks smashed their radio when they heard his speech because they thought Lon Nol was lying and he was the traitor who dared to deposed their beloved god king.
Only 1.7 millions lives lost later....

Not only that he tried to save those Khmers by telling them the truth, the sinners including his young ruthless brother Lon Non decided to stay. On the first day of Pol Pot entered the city Lon Non was executed by KR death squad. Lon Non had his own death squad and when he died he died by the death squad.
Lon Nol got a chance to make a difference, but his administration became so corrupt and repressive that even students who helped him topple Sihanouk were later jailed and killed.
He lost the election in 1972 to a more competent and reasonable In Tam, but he refused to relinquish his power and the Americans did nothing about it.
His administration was also quite incompetent and Lon Nol was also too busy with a new much younger wife.
His regime in term of corruption turned out to be much worse than that of Sihanouk.
An incompetent leader who believed more in spirits is Lon Nol who had lost a very good chance to go into history as a saviour of the Khmer nation.
The Americans later on lost total hope for the Khmer Republic so they pulled out totally from Indochina and not just from Vietnam and Laos.
Nguyen Van Thieu and Prince Souvanna Phouma of South Vietnam and Laos respectively were also incompetent and corrupt so no wonder these Americans lost the war and pulled out completely from Indochina.
In South Vietnam and Laos the Americans did most of the fighting while the useless South-Vietnamese soldiers did nothing and in addition provided military information to the Vietcongs and they in turn gave it to the North Vietnamese regular armed forces!
i don't like lon nol, he and his administration were so corrupted right before the stupid KR took over power in 1975. thank god, it all is history now!
i don't like the KR either, they killed too many khmer people for nothing, you know!

Without them Kings/Queens, Cambodia did not exist. They built the Kingdom. The same as other nations in the past history around the world. King Sihanouk was more modern than Thai absolute monarchy that use power to punish the people if they don't bow or crawl.
Sihanouk made most difficult decisions while his people like Son Ngoc Thanh, Lon Nol, Sirimatak and the rest of leaders were so divided.
He was not only one to blame but all Khmer leaders. If Lon Nol did not do the coup but work together with all Khmer leaders, there was no genocide.
IF SIHAKNUK NOT PLANT TO BE COUP AND THAT WON"T BE HAPPEN.

Pol Pot loves Cambodians and Cambodia, killed Khmers and wanted to run the country all life long.
Hun Sen loves Cambodians and Cambodia and wanted to run the country all life long.
All of them are BAD.
from this conclusion, cambodia needs terms limit law so no leader can cling on to power for life without the people's voting them in, really! otherwise, look like the past again because people will always be people, they cling on to power because they can, i.e. no law to prohibit them from clinging on to power even though they did something wrong, etc, you know! that's why cambodia had so much problem because these people don't think in the national interest, only think about themselves and their clinging on to power. only educated cambodia and our khmer people will put an end to this type of injustice. use the rule of law to stop this act once and for all, ok!
make or create more qualified people so cambodia can have choices of leaders, by law, of course!
there's no such thing anymore as only one capable leader again! make more choices so people can choose whoever they see as qualified in their own rights, not so much through inheritance, heredity, dynasty, son or daughter or sister of brother of whoever, etc, ok! it shouldn't be this way at all, you know! that's why cambodia always suffered from having the wrong kind of people in power. we need to put the right people, by using law and terms limit, etc, in office and so on, ok! again, they have to qualify in their own right by law. and the law should spell out the character and qualifications and so forth, you know! that's how it should be for a better future of cambodia, really! forget those clinging on to power! put tremendous pressure on the responsibility and accountability aspect of the position so the leader can handle the pressure, etc if they were to be a good enough leader, etc, you know! of course, they have to meet the criteria and qualifications by law, ok! think about it for a better khmer and country's future, you know! enough of the lawlessness already!

You forget to mention one more thing. The difference between Sihanouk and Lon Nol was:
Lon Nol hate Viets. He deported and killed Viets when he was in power. Sihanouk meanwhile embraced Viets, sheltered, armed, feed the viets during the american-Vietnam war. Lon Nol was not perfect in running the country, but he was the least evil as compared to others you mentioned. Hun Sen on the other hand, is even worse. He allowed, facilitated Viets to immigrate to live freely and these viets are allowed to have more privilege than his own citizens. Food for thought, people. There are no best leaders in Cambodia, it's just the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Sihanouk, Viets, Pol Pot, Hun Sen are from the same clan. Hun Sen is Sihanouk step son. Ho Chi Minh is Sihanouk's friend. When Ho Chi Minh died Sihanouk flew to North Vietnam and cried during Ho Chi Minh's funeral. When Sihanouk was deposed by Lon Nol in the 1970' he counted on North Vietnamese Army's help to fight Lon Nol to gain back his power. Sihanouk was Khmer Rouge (including Hun Sen)'s leader in the 1970-75 war and he continued to be Khmer Roulge leader even after victory. The killing of 2M khmers by the Khmer Rouge was committed with an agreement from Sihanouk. Therefore, all four evils are from the same clan.
Under Sihanouk, as Khmer Rouge leader, 2Millions khmers were killed.
Under Lon Nol, all Viet immigrants in Cambodia were either Killed or migrated back to Vietnam.
Under Hun Sen, all Viet immigrants are brough back to Cambodia.
Under Khmer Rouge with Sihanouk as leader, Khmer race was almost wiped out from Cambodia
