During the past 2 days of hearing the KR Tribunal, both Ieng Sary and Khieu Samphan pronounced the name of King-Grandpa Norodom Sihanouk. Ieng Sary, the former minister of Foreign Affairs of the KR regime reminded the court about the pardon he received from the former king. On the other hand, Khieu Samphan, the former president of the KR regime, was puzzled that the co-investigators only accused him, but they did not accuse the former king.

King Father joined the KR whom he had hated for so many years after his fall from power in 1975. My enemy's enemy is certainly my friend! Way to go King Father! You had forgotten that they were all Khmers.
In whose interest was that friendship forged with the KR by Sihanouk to fight against General Lon Nol?
Sihanouk had no hesitation to use his popularity with the peasants to urge them to join the KR in the forest to fight, obviously hoping for some form of dividend with the KR when they won the war. Things did not turn out the way he had expected; he certainly took great risk at the cost of a country and a people he continues to profess to love so dearly.
The cost of a usual civil war was of no concern to him. Of course, China and especially the North Vietnamese took advantage to advance and make materialize their long hidden agendas and dreams.
If Lon Nol were to rule without a civil war with Sihanouk supporting the KR, autogenocide would not have happened no matter how corrupt and dictatorial Lon Nol could be. If that were not the case then at least if the KR still won the war without Sihanouk's help, but always with Vietnamese assistance, then Prince Thomico did not have to defend the undefendable!
King Father did not protest against the evacuation of the people from all cities which caused so much suffering, destruction and death. If he had done it, he would not have been in New York speaking at the UN General Assembly to convince the world to support and recognize the KR new government of Democratic Kampuchea. He used his international connections and friends to help him accompish his mission of making the KR look better than they were in the eyes of the international communitties, of course, always with hope to get something back in return.
When he did not get what he wanted from the KR, he resigned from the position of the Chief of State in March of 1976, the position which Khieu Samphan took over after his (King Father)resignation.
King Father is certainly a seasoned politician surviving quite well through his ability to make deals. His deals with Hun Sen seem quite profitable, of course, to the Royal family and himself more than anyone else and still at the cost of Cambodia and Cambodians.
Well, he stills has so many people lining up on the street to welcome him when he goes to or comes back from China so his mistakes could not have been too bad for the general Cambodian public, could it?
I would prefer to take a good nap in my hammock under a good shady tree on those days.
