Ex-leader: Khmer Rouge atrocities are 'fairy tale'

In this photo released by the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, Khieu Samphan, former Khmer Rouge head of state, looks on during the third day session of a trial of the U.N.-backed war crimes tribunal in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011. Khieu Samphan accused the war crimes tribunal Wednesday of wanting his "head on the block," and insisted he had no real authority during the regime's brutal rule of Cambodia in the 1970s. "I'm not surprised that Nuon Chea, Khieu Samphan and Ieng Sary continue to deny their crimes as the charges against them of genocide, war crimes are very serious," said Theary Seng, a Cambodian lawyer and human rights activist who lost family members under their regime. "Even if I am not surprised, I am however disgusted by their lack of remorse for the suffering they caused. They are delusional in their denial in light of the weight of evidence against them - the mounds of skulls and bones, the horrific testimonies from every survivor of cruelty, the magnitude and scope of evil unleashed by them across the whole of Cambodia."
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) -- A senior Khmer Rouge leader insisted Wednesday he had no real authority during the regime's brutal rule of Cambodia and allegations he bore responsibility for its atrocities were a "fairy tale."

Head of state Khieu Samphan told a tribunal he was a figurehead leader who never joined key policy meetings in the radical communist government, which is accused of orchestrating the "killing fields" and causing the deaths of an estimated 1.7 million Cambodians in the 1970s.

In his rebuttal, he said the prosecutors' opening remarks were exaggerations based mainly on unreliable old news reports and books. "You really want my head on the block," he said.

After the trial of Khieu Samphan and two other top leaders opened Monday, prosecutors have described the pitiless policies - focused on forced labor and abolition of private property - the Khmer Rouge imposed in an effort to build an agrarian utopia.

The tribunal is seeking justice on behalf of the estimated quarter of Cambodia's population who died from executions, starvation, disease and overwork under the Khmer Rouge rule.

The defendants are the most senior surviving members of the regime: Khieu Samphan, 80; Nuon Chea, 85, the group's No. 2 and chief ideologist; and former Foreign Minister Ieng Sary, 86. They are charged with crimes against humanity, genocide, religious persecution, homicide and torture, but have denied wrongdoing.

The Khmer Rouge's supreme leader, Pol Pot, died in 1998 in Cambodia's jungles while a prisoner of his own comrades.

Khieu Samphan stressed the nationalist credentials of the Khmer Rouge, who first opposed French colonialism, then fought against a pro-Western regime and its U.S. backers and finally forced a showdown with neighboring Vietnam, Cambodia's traditional enemy.

He recalled that when he was young, communism gave hope to him as the best way for developing Cambodia, as it did for millions of youth for their own homelands. Yet the picture the prosecution had painted, he said, "would lead people to believe that my youth was that of a murderer."

"You seem to want everybody to listen to your fairy tale," he said.

Prosecutors have described a litany of horrors, large and small, saying the Khmer Rouge sought to crush not just all its enemies, but seemingly, the human spirit. Defense statements have lacked that emotional punch, but their emphasis on politics and history indicates that will be key to the trial.

Khieu Samphan's French lawyer, Jacques Verges, dismissed the prosecution statements as similar to the novels of Alexandre Dumas, author of dashing adventure yarns such as "The Count of Monte Cristo" and "The Three Musketeers."

Khieu Samphan has said he has known Verges since he attended university in France in the 1950s, when both were active in student movements against French colonialism.

"He and I used to attend meetings of student committees against colonialism. That's what bound us together in friendship," Khieu Samphan said in a 2004 interview with The Associated Press.

Verges has defended Venezuelan terrorist Carlos the Jackal and Nazi Gestapo officer Klaus Barbie and is noted for a slashing, sarcastic courtroom style, aimed as much at discrediting the judicial establishment as getting his clients off the hook.

Khieu Samphan, along with Verges, reminded the court that intensive U.S. bombing of his country during the Vietnam War contributed to its misery.

"Can you imagine what my country faced after such bloody killing and war?" Khieu Samphan declared.

While decrying the case against him, Khieu Samphan added that he welcomed the opportunity to explain his role to the Cambodian public.

Khieu Samphan earned a reputation for rectitude and bravery when he was a left-wing lawmaker under a repressive royalist regime in the 1960s before joining his Khmer Rouge comrades in the jungle.

Even today, there is a residue of respect for him.

Um Ros, 82, from Kandal province on the outskirts of Phnom Penh said Khieu Samphan and Ieng Sary were good leaders and never committed crimes against Cambodians. He said Khieu Samphan was member of parliament for his constituency in the 1960s and always was good to people.

"Khieu Samphan is not a communist leader but a real democratic leader and I don't believe he killed Cambodians during the Khmer Rouge regime," said Um Ros, who attended the trial on Monday. He said the court arrested Khieu Samphan because it was unaware of his goodwill and clean hands.

Scholars question the professions of innocence, however.

"Khieu Samphan was promoted up the ranks of his Party and State apparati to become one of the key accomplices in the political execution machine that Pol Pot created," Cambodia expert Stephen Heder said in a 1990 study. "Khieu Samphan became an ever more important assistant to Pol Pot because he remained steadfastly loyal to his leadership and policies" while others who betrayed or were suspected of disloyalty were detained or executed.

"Khieu Samphan's political star rose literally on heaps of corpses," wrote Heder, who teaches at London's School of Oriental and African Studies and worked to help the tribunal prepare cases.

Ieng Sary also spoke briefly Wednesday to reiterate that he would not participate in the trial until a ruling had been issued on a pardon he received in 1996. The tribunal previously ruled the pardon does not cover its indictment against him. He sat in a wheelchair and complained of shortness of breath and heart problems while delivering his statement.

About 600 spectators attended on the third day of the trial, including Buddhist monks, students, civil servants and ordinary people who traveled from the provinces on transport provided free by the tribunal.

Opening statements concluded with Wednesday's hearing, and actual testimony is slated to begin on Dec. 5.

The U.N.-backed tribunal has tried just one case, convicting former prison chief Kaing Guek Eav for war crimes, crimes against humanity and other offenses. His sentence was reduced to 19 years due to time served and other technicalities.

A fourth defendant in the current trial was ruled unfit due to illness. Political and financial pressure has raised concern that a third trial may never exist.

Something that all Khmers need to
think twice just for comparison,
the role between Mr.Khieu Samphan back then and King Sihamoni today.I think their role in terms of power decision
making of these two individual are similarity. All of us Cambodians seeing on uour own eyes nowadays,
what's kind of power that King
Sihamoni has?,even though the
Constitution of Cambodia has inscribed that the King had the
power such and such. But the government of Cambodia (CPP)today
is still adopt the Communist style
to lead the country.

if they are not responsible, why did they hold on to their title as head of state, foreign minister, minister of social affairs, etc, etc? why did they support that regime, knowing that it was brutal and so so? makes no sense to me. deny, shame on these old psychopaths!

Let go back 36 years to when it started?

1/ Compare the communication back then to now. Under the KR communication and technology is weak no where near effective. To have policies cascaded from top down and to have them sync is very difficult in my point of you.
So how effective if they give an instructions to kills peopler how does each sectors/province translate those information and execution? If a spy got hold of those information early and execute and new message...?

It like we have 10 people you tell 1 person to pass on the information to the next person and so on until the last 10 person, we know for a fact that from start to end the information will be completely different to what it intended.

So looking back, does the KR leaders known who is it the KR members at the grass root? For example Hun Sen is a Vietname KR he has alway and favor Vietnam over Cambodia, that ideaology will be differnt to Samphan and Pol Pot KR...so to please Vietnam ..what would Hun Sen and it friend on the Tale end do, how did he lost his eye, did he masicar all the people in the hospital during the KR era?

But let wait and see the development of who is the real Killers KR or Vietname KR?

For minority of Cambodian Khieu Samphan is a bad man.

But to majority of Cambodian Khieu Samphan is still very good man among other Khmer figures.

Khieu Samphan has no money both in local and oversea bank.

Jacques Vergès which is old friend and now become lawyer of Khieu Samphan visited Khieu Samphan at his old wooden house at the Thai-Cambodia boder and Jacques Vergès gave Khieu Samphan 50000 US $ to buy a small land and build a house and Salakrao at Pailin as a friend.

Khieu Samphan is a nominal leader but the reason he supported The Communist Party of Kampuchea to save Cambodia from Indochina Federation .

Communist Party of Kampuchea or Khmer Rouge.

The Communist Party of Kampuchea was a combination of 80 % of former Khmer Viet Minh and 20 % of a Paris students group was created in 1960 by 3 figures as follow:

1. Tou Samouth.
2. Nuon Chea.
3. Pol Pot.

After 1954 Geneva conference there were about 5000 of Khmer Viet Minh fighters in Cambodia .

About 1000 of these former Khmer Viet Minh went to Hanoi with Son Ngoc Minh or better known as Achar Mean including other Khmer Viet Minh like Pen Sovann.

The rest of 4000 of these former Khmer Viet Minh later joined the Communist Party of Kampuchea through Tou Samouth, Kea Mea , So Phim, Rous Yim and many other Khmer Viet Minh senior military commanders.

So that why from the beginning of the foundation of this Communist Party of Kampuchea or Khmer Rouge there were about 80 % of these former Khmer Viet Minh fighters and senior military commanders
such as Tou Smouth, Keo Meas , So Phim and Rous Yim ect…

After the fall down of Phnom Penh to Khmer Rouge or Communist Party of Kampuchea on April 17, 1975 these former Khmer Viet Minh fighters became the chiefs of villages, communes , districts and Zones like So Phim in Eastern Zone Secretary and Rous Yim in Northern Zone Secretary .

Note:

1. Tou Samouth , So Phim , Rous Yim , played important role in joining all former Khmer Viet Mint fighters into the Communist Party of Kampuchea after the Communist Party of Kampuchea was created in 1960.

2. Nuon Chea Played an important role in joining other former Khmer Issarak like Ta Mok , Ke Pok into the Communist Party of Kampuchea or Khmer Rouge after the Communist Party of Kampuchea was created in 1960.

3. The First name of the Communist Party of Kampuchea was the Kampuchea Worker’s Party and renamed to the Communist Party in 1966 after Tou Samouth was arrested and killed in 1962.

4. Between 1960-1975 Pol Pot troops had increased about 40 % or 45 % especially after 1970s.

Pol Pot solders never train in Hanoi or worked under the command of yuon Viet Minh as majority of former Khmer Viet Minh fighers in the Communist Party of Kampuchea were trained and fought side by side wit yuon Viet Minh during First Indochina War 1946-1954 against French colony in Cambodia.

The founder and the members of the Communist Party of Kampuchea or Khmer Rouge are between 1975-1979 are:

1. Pol Pot the Secretary General of Communist Party of Kampuchea.

2. Nuon Chea duputy Secretary of Communsit Party of Kampuchea.

3. Ieng Sary.

4. So Phim.

5. Son Sen.

6. Ta Mok .

i think leaders, if you study them and observe them, they seemed to favor those so-called friendly countries who supported them, who recognized their power, no tolerate them, etc... that's why they lean more toward those countries for support, etc... if you don't support them, they won't lean toward you, you see! i think it has nothing to do with the leader favoring vietnam over cambodia or what have you. it's more like they seek support and got it from that country, thus, they lean more toward that country. it's like that in diplomacy, and has nothing to do with favoring one race over another like in the case of viet/youn and khmer, etc... the countries that gave them a hard time or attached condition or strings to their assistance is usually unfavored or unpopulared with those leaders. trust me, if viet/youn changed their policy toward cambodia, cambodia probably disfavor viet/youn gov't and turn to look elsewhere for support. so, it has nothing to do with favoring one race over another, it's more about support and unconditional assistance, etc... know it and understand it, ok! it's about appreciation or gratitute or reciprication, etc or even exchange of favor, etc....,you know.

it's about reliable! and leaders' mind changes like the wind direction, unless you help and help and help without condition, like love without condition and so forth.

it's not a fairytale when you have a quarter of the population perished under your rule, ok! it was real!

i think the ex king sihanouk was mad, so he joined the KR, but the KR tricked him and used his fame and popularity for their commy propaganda to gain trick and deceive khmer people into supporting them when at the end, they would slaughter a quarter of the population who they deemed did not support their stone age, commy ideology. remember noun chea was the KR's ideology or architect along with ah crazy pol pot as well. they were all very incompetent, no doubt about it!

Anonymous said...

Well...King Sihanouk knew that the Khmer Rouge was winning the war and he want to be seen on the side of the winner and by taking photograph with these Khmer Rouge and he want to assure the Khmer Rouge that he is one of them and so do his ideology! But the Khmer Rouge was too smart for him and they used the photograph of King Sihanouk among the Khmer Rouge as propaganda tool among Cambodian population which the Khmer Rouge knew that majority of Cambodian population still respect and follow King Sihanouk.

Once the Khmer Rouge came to power and King Sihanouk was put under house arrest and shut out from the outside and inside world and no Cambodian people are allowed to come in contact with King Sihanouk. The Khmer Rouge used King Sihanouk and King Sihanouk used the Khmer Rouge!

What did Ms Theary Seng ever publish about the role in the genocide of men who are still in power nowadays?

Nothing?
Why not?

What about Senate president, CPP chairman, Prime minister?

Nothing she ever published.

So I recommend to her either go to the real facts or the real responsibilyties or just shut up, Ms Seng.

You got it?
Smoke a cigar and think three times, because think twice is not enough obviously ;)

Vietnam's bad intention toward Cambodia will be unmasked.

We need to take this land thief, Vietnam, to the international court; otherwise Vietnam will keep creating turmoil in Cambodia.

After 1989, did Vietnam truly withdraw all of its troops back to Vietnam?

Did Vietnam comply with the 1991 Paris peace accord?

Millions of illegal and legal Vietnamese have been residing inside Cambodia, causing extreme concerns amongst Khmer people about the prospect that Cambodia may be the second Kampuchea Krom.

The killings during the Pol Pot's era were committed by the Khmer rouge, the Khmer Vietminh, etc.
Notice that Khmer Vietminh were created by Vietnam to make Khmers fight with Khmers, to make Khmers kill each others.

How about the K5, which killed hundreds of thousands of Khmer people in the 80's? This K5 scheme was totally orchestrated by Vietnam.

We need to take Vietnam to the international court about this K5 issue regarding Vietnam’s catastrophic action in Cambodia.

Theary Seng,

It is apparent that you are now Yuon's slave.
Stop trying to interrupt the court stupid girl.
They will find out who killed Khmer people the most during the POL Pot's era.

As Khmer I've always respected to MR Kiev Samphan, although he was spotted in Khmer Rouge.

Why I state that and who is actually MR Khiev Samphan and why he acted so:

1) MR Khiev Samphan is Khmer tnationalists, who is always againgt Indochina forderation carried out by Viet.

2) MR Khiev Samphan were uncorrupted man. For instance, whereas he was minister in Sihanouk's time, he drove to work by bike, just like politician in France, Germany or UK now

3) Because of his stubbornness against corruption in Cambodia, he proved his undoing, he was offended by the Sihanouk's state apparatus, including tortured and he concludes with the Khmer Rouge. Khmer route consists of a) and b Viet KR) KR and later as Nationalist China KR.

4) Except the Killing Fields, I have never heard what he had wrong doing.

The quesreations of the killing Fileds in Cambodi is that who is the real killers at that time:

1) The Viet Khmer Rouge OR
2) The China Khmer Rouge? AND
3) Why Viet is always put its nose into Khmer internal problem AND
4) Why the Thai policy don't interested in Khmer like Viet, despite Khmer he the tradition like Thai people ??????Vie
5) Why Thai people don't want to live in Cambodia (till now only small group business people) but Viet more than 6 millions in Khmer land ???

6) What is in the next 10 or 20 years later? Will the real Khmers be a Indianer like in USA?

MR Kiev Samphan, all koun Khmers know you very good, you must speak out. Even you worked with communist, but you want to prevent Khmers out from Indochina forderation and claims Sihanouk to appear at ICCC.

One day, when you will die your name must be written in Khmer history, but good more than bad.

but, what was all that killing your own people, from infants to singers to movie stars to teachers, to just about anybody and everybody, how does that loving your country fit it? and starving and enslaving people to dick canal by hands, etc have anything to do with loving your country? maybe this old fart is just making lame excuses about loving country, protecting country from youn or whatever. he know under his group policy, there was nothing good for cambodia, in fact it stunned cambodia's growth and took cambodia back to the stone age or primitive society. what's all of that has anything to do with loving your country, your people, etc? for me, it's more like stupid, ignorant, evil, selfish, communist, authoritarian, dictatorial, tyranny, killer mentality, etc, etc...!

So be careful who we look up to. We should all seek peace, liberty, happiness, rightness and share with people around us. We condemn violence, abuse, exploitations, lies, deception, cheating
