Oakland police investigate morning homicide

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- Residents say the area around East 28th Avenue is a quiet neighborhood most of the time, but Saturday morning was not one of those times when a drive-by shooting killed a father of four.

The Nhep family's life permanently changed at 3:20 a.m. Saturday, the moment a drive-by shooter sprayed their house with bullets. One shot went through Thorn Nhep's bedroom where the father of four was sleeping. Nhep died instantly.

"I kept calling his name, but he didn't response," daughter Anna Sok said.

Some of the bullet holes are from two other drive-by shootings that have happened in the neighborhood. Oakland police won't confirm whether the 46-year-old mechanic was the intended target.

"I have no clue why they'd want to shoot up his house like that," said neighbor Harry Winston.

The early morning gunfire woke up Winston, who lives across the street from the Nhep family.

"Some violence comes close to home," Winston said. "It reminds you that there are people who insist on getting through life that way."

Nhep and his wife immigrated to the United States from Cambodia two decades ago, hoping to find a better life here. Nhep's wife and children plan on moving out of the neighborhood as soon as possible.

Why those killers took their time and lisk to kill this man ?
I don't defend the killers, they still are criminals but I ask myself, the victim must have done something wrong to them.

I don't think this is a proper way to deal with someone that disagree with your political affiliated. I do not support him, if he spoke highly about Hun Sen and the CPP, but living in America, he should has that right to practice without any concern, but it is too late now. Are we going to kill all those that disagree with us? To me , it is not not good enough excuse to take a human life base on his political standard. If we are the SRP supporters think that it is the right way to do so, I must say , our party has become a killing and silencing our competitor kind of political party.

May he rest in peace.

Deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased...

7:19 pm,
Because he drinks too much and he should get killed? What an unwise comment....

10:57 pm and 12:42 pm,
It really shows the colour of SRP once they are in power. They would carry out the same murderous regime as Hun Sen. This is prime example as seen from the cry out for joy from its supporters. What difference does it make if a supporter of CPP living in America can not exercise his/her freedom of speech or believe. I thought America is the master of democracy where one have every right to human rights including freedom of speech. Oh, may be the Khmer-American democracy way!

Khmer people are BAD. They do not resolve their issues through peaceful means. Forget about Youn, Khmer people ourselves are the PROBLEM!

And I agree with 1:38 am.

He maybe threated to other innocent khmer people to follow his doctrine, and/or threated not free and safe to go back to Cambodia if not join his party CPP?
