On 04 January, the joint police force of the 07 Makara district, the Phnom Penh city hall and the security force protecting the Phanimex company put in place their final ultimatum and they shut down any avenue for protesting in the Borei Keila land dispute case.
The authority did not allow any resident to remain on the disputed land starting from noon time on 04 January. The authority evicted 200 families out of a total of 3,000 families which lived there.
The new locations that Phanimex forced the resident to relocate are: (1) Tuol Sambo in Prey Veng province, Dangkao district, about 10km from the city and (2) Phnom Bat, Ponhea Loeu district, Kandal province, about 30km from Phnom Penh.
The forced eviction of the residents took place just one day after the clash between the cops and the residents which led to about 10 injured people on both sides. The cops arrested 8 residents during the clash and all of them were sent to jail pending their sentencing.
Residents ask for intervention from the US embassy
About 100 Borei Keila residents protested in front of the US embassy in Phnom Penh on 04 January in order to ask the embassy to intervene and to inform the government about the hardship faced by the residents after the cops used force to chase them out of their houses.
The residents arrived in front of the US embassy at about 6PM, and they plan to rest for the night on the lawn of the public park located in front of the embassy, but the authority did not allow them.
Sok Penhvuth, the Daun Penh district chief, who was present at the protest location, declared that the authority will not allow the residents to rest in the public park at all. He used protection of public safety and safety of the US embassy as pretext.
The residents and 2 SRP MPs tried to seek intervention from the city hall, but it was futile. The authority refuses to take responsibility about where the residents would live after the cops used bulldozers to destroy their homes and chased them out from Borei Keila.
The residents broke up about 8PM and they still do not know where they will stay overnight. Human rights observers indicated that the authority had no clear plan and it does not take responsibility for its action after it evicted the residents from their houses to take away their lands to give to a private company.
