Letter to The Phnom Penh Post
Dear Editor,
January 7 is indeed a significant day for survivors of the Khmer Rouge. It arrested the macabre convulsions that would have swallowed all of us into a hellish hole if the Vietnamese military had not intervened.
It is a bittersweet day of commemoration through invasion.
And now, unfortunately, it is a day propagandised to be solely the Day of Liberation, neatly sweeping away the equally important fact of it being simultaneously the inaugurating day of an occupation that would last for the next decade.
That occupation began with the barricading of Phnom Penh to facilitate the plundering of its wealth by convoys of trucks heading to Vietnam and the mass crimes of the K5 plan.
My hairdresser remembers returning from Battambang to his home in Boeung Keng Kang I on February 3, 1979, only to find that all the wealthy neighbourhoods of villas and jewellery stores were still barricaded off.
It was an occupation cut short only by the meltdown of the Cold War – specifically, the break-up of the Soviet Union, which funded the Vietnamese occupation of Cambodia.
The rewriting of history in this manner by the current regime is fraught with danger for the longevity of Cambodian stability and peace.
Cycles of past grievances that touch on national identity and humiliation run deep in any society, and no less in Cambodia. Think of the Khmer Kampuchea Kroms and their current suffering and struggles. Think of the underpinnings for the bloodletting in the former Yugoslavia.
It’s not only on January 7 that the regime is revising history to fit its narrow political agenda. The political interference in the Khmer Rouge tribunal speaks to the same dangers.
This regime never wanted the KRT, but once it was inevitable and the regime was confident of its control over the mechanisms of the process, it did everything to achieve and protect its twin goals: to go down in history as the government that put the Khmer Rouge on trial and, concurrently, to erase its own Khmer Rouge history and crimes.
With the United Nations’ stamp of approval, the CPP regime is achieving exactly that.
No counterbalancing, competing narratives are permitted or have the resources and official, institutional dissemination systems to match it.
Thus, January 7 is paradoxical for Cambodians who are simultaneously survivors of the Khmer Rouge, survivors of the K5 plan under the Vietnamese occupation, and continuing survivors of a regime that desperately needs to whitewash its history of the Khmer Rouge and has indebted political ties to Vietnam – a dangerous liaison, in light of the two countries’ historical enmity over territorial annexation.
Stated differently, January 7 is a paradoxical and conflicting date for us who are Cambodian victims of the Khmer Rouge, Cambodian victims of the Vietnamese occupation and Cambodian victims of a regime with unhealthy political and historical ties to both the Khmer Rouge and the Vietnamese military.
January 7 initially made us deliriously grateful, then wearily suspicious. That is the tension.

The international communities should understand Vietnam's true intention of trying to mold Cambodia into a part of Vietnam.
To make this idea materialize, Vietnam must create trouble in Cambodia so that it could take advantage of the situation.
For instance, Vietnam created Khmer Vietminh and brainwashed them to kill Khmers during the Pol Pot's era.
Just curious:
Does international law allow one country to kidnap the children of its neighbors and brainwash them and later use them to attack their own Country and commit the mass killing of their own people?
Vietnam did exactly like that to Cambodia. That's why approximately 3 million Cambodians have perished from 1975 to 1979 because of Vietnam's bad intention toward Cambodia.
In addition, hundred of thousands of Khmer people dies in the 80s due to Vietnam deployment of K5 project.
If the killing of Khmers during the Pol Pot era were not clear that Khmer Vietminh were the culprit, the K5 on the other hand clearly reflected Vietnam’s vicious intention because Cambodia at the time was fully controlled by Vietnam. Vietnam was the chief architect of K5 project.
The United Nations should look into this unique case of Vietnam interference in Cambodia. Even now, Vietnam orders almost every move of the puppet government.
During my young life, I have heard my people lamented that why Khmer people always suffer?
Because Vietnam has its own plan to make Cambodian suffer and exploit it.

Theary's opinion reflects a new Khmer new generation who did not experience the hardship under the Khmer Rouge Regime and political history of Khmer and Yuon. It is true the January 7 th
saved us from the death row, but January 7 created more suffer for Khmer and the destruction of Khmer Nation. Yuon uses January 7 to manipulate new Khmer generation in order to continue its occupation over Cambodia through the ignorant Khmer leaders: Hun, Heng, and chea.
The Vietnamese Army did NOT occupy Cambodia to rescue the Khmer people from the Pol Pot genocidal regime.
They occupied Cambodia and installed their Khmer Vietminh government to get rid of the military attacks against Kampuchea Khrom committed by the Khmer rouge.
And they did occupy Cambodia to complete their old plan: Indochine under Youn rule.
The Viet immigrants to Cambodia since 1979 are the living proof for the Vietnames plan.
It really IS quite that simple.
The yuons had invested so much in Khmer Vietminh but they were disillusioned when they found out most of these Khmer Vietmineh were too nationalist and patriotic , opposing too much the yuon plan. So they sent them to jail or death-Pen Sovan, Chan Si , keo Chenda,eg. The yuon had found good accomplice in the real Khmer Rouge defecotrs -Hun Sen, Heng Samrin, Chea Sim. I twas these KR who signed the 1979,1982, 1985 treaties ceding lands to the yuons, not the Khmer Vietminh.
It is about time Khmer learn to critically evaluate fact, not using emtotion.

Then why Vietnam did not come at 7 Jan 1976 or 1077....etc...when the killings were in full swing? So it would look like a liberation than an invasion, since more Khmer souls would be saved. The fact was it all planned. Hanoi knew the killings were taking place and recognized the regime till 1978.

Vietcong invaded and occupied Cambodia for 10 years! Did Cambodia have economic growth for 10 years? Of course not! Because the Vietcong were so busy plundering Cambodia! The Vietcong never revitalized anything on Cambodia besides sending more Cambodian (Khmer) to die with the help of the Vietcong slaves to protect their occupation over Cambodia!

I think you all manipulated by the yuon. Their intention to enter cambodia were to kill all khmer and since too many khmer die and b/c of international pressured yuon pretended that they were here to save khmer instead. Remembered yuon invaded Cambodia in january 7, 1979 and installed hengsamrin former khmer rouge leader as the head of state. some of the khmer rouge were yuon agent and other factions sided with or with a big support by the chinese. And they are all murderers...eeyore!!
what ms seng theary wrote here is a true reflection of how most khmer people felt about both the KR and the vietnamese occupation, that is, khmer view both the KR atrocity and the vietnamese occupation with ambivalence. although we are grateful to rid of the KR, but we also feel uncomfortable under the viet/youn occupation of our country then. so true on how khmer people feel about these two unwanted so-called saviors. the KR killed its own people indiscriminately while the viet/youn occupied our sovereigned country. although the KR is now history and the viet/youn is no longer occupied cambodia, the controversial date of january 7th brought us both relief and anxiety, that is the honest truth if you ask khmer people from all walks of life, some people are appreciative while others viewed the vietnamese as suspicious occupier.

I agree with Nuon Chea saying that the Communist Party of Kampuchea was under the influence of yuon Hanoi base on the profile and events happening since the creation of the Communist Party of Kampuchea or CPK in 1960 as follow:
CPK or the Communist Party of Kampuchea was created in 1960 under the name of the Workers' Party of Kampuchea to be remained alliance with Hanoi but not under order of Hanoi anymore by :
1. Tou Samouth.
2. Noun Chea.
3. Pol Pot.
4. Ieng Sary.
5. So Phim .
6. And many more of former senior Khmer Viet Minh commander.
Note: Tou Samouth and So Phim played very immportant role in joining former Khmer Viet Minh fighters int the CPK and other played an immportant rol in joining Tamouk and Ke Pok ect.... .
The worker's party was renaming to CPK in 1966 after Tou Samouth was arrested and killed in 1962.
So from the beginning most members and the members of central committee of CPK were former Khmer Viet Minh like Tou Samouth, So Phim , Rhos Nhim.
If there was no January 7, 1979, there will certainly no 21 October 1991 which allowed small political groups politically insignificant to jump on the gold opportunity to assert also their role as patriot (patriots opportunistic after the fall of Pol Pot regime) in the revival of Cambodia for new opportunity of political career because the great powers decide to put Cambodia under UN tutorship and finally to engage a peace processcus because the international political situation has changed.
While they fought for 10 years by risking their lives in extremely difficult conditions the powerful Pol Pot’s forces , we wait quietly without risk the most appropriate time come (21 October 1991) to proclaim patriotic , after the death of more than 1.5 million civilians cambodian.
January 7, 1979 was the date of the liberation of Cambodia from the genocidal Pol Pot’s regime. October 21, 1991 was the date that allowed all other politicians insignificant (they are so many ) to come and eat and enjoy the Cambodia that reborn.
In politics as in business opportunism can sometimes be a better and easy means to succeed.
It is the important political lesson that I retained from January 7, 1979 to October 21, 1991.

The Viet did not intervene Khmer from Khmer Rouge; they did invade Cambodia on Jan. 7th instead. The Viet was behind the Khmer Rouge to kill Khmer people, and then the Viet provoked the war with the Khmer Rouge in order to fight back again the Khmer in the same time INVADE THE COUNTRY. If Youn a real savior, why Youn didn't want withdraw their troop after occupying Cambodia for a decade? They withdrew from Cambodia by The UN’s pressure. After they left the country, they did the coup d’état agaisnt FUNCINPEC through CPP which is puppet Youn’s party. You got to understand that Youn has intension to kill Khmer people in order to replace by its own. What Youn did was “ KILLING KHMER ON THE RIGHT, AND SAVE KHMER ON THE LEFT”. This is called HYPOCRISY. Your action in Cambodia tells me that you have been sold to Hun Sen. I am one of the real Khmer people, you mean nothing to me. You are simply a hypocrite trash serving Youn's plan to Vietnamitize the country. My heart is full of grief when I saw Youn killed many of the Khmer intellectual, but with hope that the younger generation as you rebuilding the country. You have shown your undignified behavior toward Khmer politics which is the most regretful for Khmer people.
Séng Theary, you need to review your own consciousness. You look very stupid to me. Real Khmer don’t act like you. If you are a real Khmer you ought to protest again the land eviction, and tell the world that Youn was behind the Khmer Rouge; Youn is still controlling Cambodia through Hun Sen government. They way you act make a question in my mind that you are simply Youn.
The Big Big Big issue in Cambodia today is Youn have been grown in Cambodia since 1951, they can speak, write Khmer, they have Khmer name, they live in Khmer manner, but they have Youn brain.
