Human rights officials and Borei Keila residents claimed that on 11 Jan 2012, the cops arrested 30 protesting Borei Keila residents, 7 of whom are children.
The arrest was made around 4PM when the residents were protesting in front of the Phnom Penh city hall to demand for compensation for the demolition of their houses.
The cops arrested the residents and forced them into trucks that took them to Prey Speu social center [KI-Media Note: Prey Speu is notoriously known for torturing inflected by the cops] located in Dankao district, Phnom Penh city.
38 Khieu Lai and some of the other residents called over the phone from Prey Speu that they are worried and they don’t know where else they will be sent to.
Nhim Phalla, a woman arrested by the cops and sent to Prey Speu, claimed that she lost her 2 sons – a 10 and a 12-year-old boy – during the arrest.
Regarding this problem, Am Sam Ath, the technical director of Licadho’s investigation department, said that Prey Speu is a housing center for beggars and orphan children, nevertheless, Borei Keila residents were sent there as well.
On 03 January 2012, the Phanimex Company, along with the joint police force, used bulldozers to smash more than 200 homes in Borei Keila. About 200 famlies were taken out to live in Tuol Sambo, Prey Veng commune, Dangkao district, Phnom Penh and at Phnom Bat in Ponhea Loeu district, Kandal province. However, a number of residents refused to leave to the 2 locations above and they continue to protest to demand for justice and compensation stemming from the forced eviction.
