i think politically speaking we should not, but to honor our freedom and survival from the death grip of the commy KR, we should commemorate it as a turning point from one era to another era of time. i don't think people should politicize it. if you study history anywhere, everytime there is a turning point in history, that date was always remembered or marked regardless. just study history and you will see this fact. dates were always marked for history purpose, you know. i think we should look at it as such, not politics.
maybe instead of calling it as "vietnam invasion" date, why not call it as liberation day from the KR brutality or "salvation day" so it reflects its real meaning or significance.

Vietnam intentions toward Cambodia, is clearly NO Liberation; the definition of liberation is "to set free from control by a foreign government and to provide equal rights or full social or economic opportunities for a particular group". We Khmers don't recognize January 7th as Cambodia independence Day! It was the day when Vietnam came to rob Cambodia. They said they came to save Cambodia, but their intention was to invade Cambodia. January 7th was all set up by Vietnam ordering Hun Sen's government to celebrate January 7th as Cambodia independence day. Hun Sen is a puppet of Communist Vietnam. Vietnam and Hun Sen have sent millions of Vienamese immigrants to live in Cambodia today. We Khmers need United Nations helps to examine and overthrow this communist corrupt government. R.Bo

Hun Sen has not been well educated. He did not know anything, but blind and dumb. He thinks he is smart, but he did not know the Khmer history and his story way from thousands of years, from Mongol Empire facing off with Khmer Empire, and so on. Hun Sen is very stupid and does not know anything. He was lucky to have power because of Vietnamese bosses and military form Hanoi who installed him as a stupid and laughable Prime Minister. He did not know how to lead Cambodia into the right direction, but he has listened to his Viet Hanoi bosses what and how to do this or that in the wrong direction to destroy Cambodia including natural resources, trees or forests, water, and so on. When his Vietnamese bosses in Hanoi made money on Cambodian Natural resources, his Viet Hanoi bosses split the money with this stupid and dumb idiot, and then have the power to attack his own people. i wonder do people understand the word "era". era is time and it comes and goes from one era to the next, why people make it such a big deal as if era or time stands still or something. cambodia have different era all the time, good or bad, it's just an era of time, why people don't take time to understand this concept? i suggest they study history to understand the meaning of era, really.
when we try to control abstract, we get so frustrated. learning to let feeling go help calms one down a bit, i think. don't be so hard on one self, breathe and relax and meditate calms the mind a bit, you know. breathe more oxygen into you body and expel the co2 by exhaling.

to understand its importance, one has to ask themself, did i ever live under the brutal KR regime? yes or no. if yes, you can appreciae this date, if no, perhaps you can never fully understand why people on the other side think so, you see. it all starts will self talk, it helps you to understand other people's way better. try it! self talk is god way of talking to you, and it's not crazy, ok, it's thinking. and you don't necessarily have to talk out loud, just mubble to self is enough, really. it's a think process and it calm your mind down and had you think logically as well.

I agree with you on your analysis. But I would not celebrate it if I were Cambodian. I knew so much and so clear about Vietnam's expansionism policies toward her neighbors, and after I knew for facts that the same Vietnam who helped Pol Pot and Hun Sen to power.
All of Khmer rouges: Pol Pot, Nuon Chea, Khiev Samphan, Ieng Sary and others worked for Yuons.
They killed Khmers for Yuons.
Year 1977, Pol Pot went to Vietnam to plan Yuons invasion.
7 january 1979 is the day where Khmer rouges and Yuons reached their goal.
Khmer rouges were Yuon slaves.

I say NO to January 7 celebration. But we can commemorate the day as viet's invastion day so that the next generation khmer won't forget the atrocity that the viets committed on our khmer people. We also need to file a complaint to the UN asking for compensation from the viets for the stealing of khmer natural resources and the killing of innocent people.
