The senate election for the 3rd mandate takes place today. The election will last between 7AM and 3PM on Sunday 29 January 2012.
During the 3d mandate, only two major parties are competing: the CPP and the SRP. 57 seats among a total of 61 are at stake. For the remaining four of the seats, two will be selected by the NatAss and two by the king.
Hun Xen, the CPP vive president and MP from Kandal province, voted at the Hun Xen pedagogic center in Takhmao city, Kandal province, next to his fortress.
During this election, two major politicians will not vote: Prince Ranariddh, president of the Norodom Ranariddh Party (NRP) and opposition leader Sam Rainsy, President of the Sam Rainsy Party whose parliamentary immunity was cancelled after he was sued by the government in regards to border dispute with Hanoi. Sam Rainsy is currently living in exile in France.
The National Election Cheating (NEC) committee will announce partial results in the afternoon of 29 January.
