On 05 January 2012, the US warned that land dispute problems in Cambodia could lead to social unrest.
The US warning came after residents were evicted from their homes this week. The eviction was accompanied by arrest of at least 10 protesters and 40 people were injured in the violent action by the police.
On Tuesday 03 January, the cops shot tear gas and pelted rocks on residents in Borei Keila and the residents returned the fight by pelting rocks, throwing wood and soil on the cops. The events took place when the Phnom Penh city cops used bulldozers to smash more than 200 of the resident’s homes.
Sean Mcintosh, the spokesman for the US embassy in Phnom Penh, told RFA that the US is concerned that a large number of land disputes went unresolved in Cambodia, this situation would lead to social unrest in Cambodia.
During the past few years, numerous human rights groups severely criticized Cambodia for the forced evictions of the people that take place all over the country and this situation led to thousands of people losing their homes, the majority of whom are the ppor.
Last August, the World Bank suspended all loans to the Cambodian government due to land dispute and eviction in Boeung Kak Lake.
US embassy accepts petition from Borei Keila residents
On 05 Jan, the US embassy in Phnom Penh received a petition from Borei Keila residents who asked the embassy to help intervene with the Phanimex company. The residents requested the embassy to help resolve their land dispute problem.
