Two Thai couples were arrested by Cambodian authorities on Sunday night and charged with illegal entry, Burapa Task Force deputy commander Kukiat Srinaka said on Monday.

Col Kukiat said the Thai-Cambodian border coordination office in Sa Kaeo's Aranyaprathet district reported that the four people were arrested while travelling on two pick-up trucks in Thmor Pouk district of Bantey Meanchey province, about 9km from the Thai border.

They were identified as Saran Panphet, 42, and his wife Suriya, 42, and Bai Sodachan, 24, and his wife Wanwisa, 24.

Pol Lt-Col Benjapol Rodsawat, deputy immigration police chief of Sa Kaeo province, said he had learned from the Thai-Cambodian border coordination office that the four sought permission from Cambodian border patrol police to take their vehicles, along with some mining equipment, through the Bung Ta Kuan - Ta Phraya border crossing to make a survey in Oddar Meanchey province without seeking permission from the authorities.

On the way to Oddar Meanchey, they were accompanied by three Cambodian border patrol police.

They were later arrested by soldiers from Cambodia's 51st Infantry Division at a village in Thmor Pouk district and charged with illegal entry as they had no travel documents.

The four were due to appear in the Si Sophon Court this afternoon, Pol Lt-Col Benjapol said.
