If you don’t mind, on this Khmer New Year evening, I would like to share with you a few Khmer Oldies songs. For this occasion, songs that first come to mind are something like “Samelai”, “Phisavong”, “Roam Vong Chhnam Thmei” and “Bot Sandek”:
Sin Sisamouth & So Savoeun - Samelai សាមេឡៃ
Sin Sisamouth & Hem Sovann – Phisavong ភិសាវង្ស
Sin Sisamouth & Ros Sereisothea - Roam Vong Chhnam Thmei រាំវង់ ឆ្នាំថ្មី
Sin Sisamouth - Bot Sandek បូតសណ្តែក
If you grew up around the 70s, you probably remembered these two memorable songs: "Komloh Honda, Kanha PC" and "Kh-nhom Ien Nass":
Sin Sisamouth & Pen Ran - Komloh Honda Kanha PC កម្លោះហុងដា កញ្ញាប៉េសេ
Ros Sereisothea - Kh-nhom Ien Nass ខ្ញុំអៀនណាស់
Do you remember singers Va Sovy and Sisowath Panara Sereivuth? You shouldn't feel bad if you don't because I don't either. I am certain the song "Neavea Komsot" is an interpretation of a western song, but I just couldn't figure what it is. The next song "Baksei Loeung" or Yellow Bird is much easier to guess, however, I am not sure if the singer is really Sisowath Panara Sereivuth. The CD where I got it from indicates that it was sung by a "group". On the web, somebody indicated that the singer is Sisowath Panara Sereivuth. Maybe someone can confirm this?

She was once an up-and-coming singer from the SKD band (Société Khmère de Distilleries, State Alcohol and Wine Companies under Sihanouk’s regime) who featured on Sihanouk’s movie “La Joie de Vivre” (Dolce Vita or The good life), Sieng Dy was quite a celebrity during her time.

Sieng Dy - Phnom Koulen ភ្នំគូលេន
The following two songs by Sin Sisamouth: "Chuob Khnea Chong Kroy Leu Chhner Ksach" and "Oh Oh Ye Ye" are not quite famous as "Any", but they are lovely nonetheless.
Sin Sisamouth - Chuob Khnea Chong Kroy Leu Chhner Ksach ជួបគ្នា ចុងក្រោយ លើ ឆ្នេរខ្សាច់
Sin Sisamouth - Oh Oh Ye Ye អូៗ យេៗ
The next song, Dara Kh-nhom (My Star), is by Ung Nary: Oh my Star, it’s getting quite late but where are you? You always shine alongside the moon (and in my heart)…
Ung Nary - Dara Kh-nhom តារាខ្ញុំ
Finally, to end the evening, let's listen to "Teur Aun Deung Te" by Sin Sisamouth: Do you know that I only love you? I am willing to sacrifice my life just to be near you...
Sin Sisamouth - Teur Aun Deung Te តើអូនដឹងទេ...
Happy New Year! សួស្តីឆ្នាំថ្មី!
