A prominent environmental activist in Cambodia has been shot and killed in a confrontation with military police in a threatened forest region.

The man, Chut Wutty was travelling with two journalists in the southwest of Cambodia, where he'd been helping local people organise protests against land concessions.

Chut Wutty was the director of the Natural Resource Protection Group and had received death threats before.

David Boyle, journalist with the Phnom Penh Post, has been following the case. He says the human rights group has released information that it gathered about the killing.
