BEIJING — China is criticizing British Prime Minister David Cameron for meeting with the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, saying it amounts to support for Tibet's independence from Chinese rule.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters Tuesday that the British government ignored Beijing's objections by going ahead with Monday's meeting in London. Hong said the meeting undermined China-Britain relations and that London should now take actions to improve ties.
Beijing has campaigned for years to counteract the Dalai Lama's international influence by pressuring foreign leaders not to meet with him.
