it is about time miss cambodia re-enter into the miss universe pageant again, really. cambodia has been absent from this important world event since over 30 plus years now. i'm glad that cambodia prettiest and smartest and brightest ladies will be competing again in miss universe pageant, hopefully by 2013. to participate in the miss universe pageant is about pride and honor along with beauty, of course. plus, when cambodia encourage our brave, intelligent, educated beautiful khmer women to entering into the miss universe pageant contestant, it will bring the much needed world attention to cambodia, this way the world will know more and better understand cambodia when they hear the name cambodia and so on. this is smart, wise, clever and enlightened way for khmer smart, educated beauty to participate into miss universe pageant, really. god bless cambodia always.
think about it, if other women in the world can do it, why not cambodia as well? wake up cambodia!

Yes I cannot understand how Miss Pageant be allowed for women over 26 years old if she was in KR. May be the writer misquoted her bio. May be her family members not her. She looks between 28-34.
The article is inaccurate. Bits and pieces of the above story was sourced out from Khmerican's originally article published on Feb 14th. Phanith is 23-years-old and did not live through the 1975-1979 Khmer Rouge regime, however, her parents have. She was born in Kao I Dang refugee camp in 1989 and immigrated to the US in 1991.
She was born in KI Camp at 1989. She is 23. It is good to have Khmer girl represents Cambodia.

She did not live under the Khmer Rouge regime, but thier family, relatives and most of thier friends.
Some of us live outside the country during the years 70, but we still psychology and emotion suffered. It meant we went through all the same situations, just the different ways.
We have to leave the country, live far from home, families and parents and not also as refugee statutes.
From 1975 on, we have lost all connections, did not hear or get information from Cambodia and of course from our families, relatives and all friends.
if cambodia can get back in miss universe contest, it means cambodia is back to normal on track again. this is what cambodia needs, a new name for cambodia. we lost in the past, but we are resilient and now back at it again on world stage, go for it, cambodia, don't let other personal things get in the way of doing what is right for cambodia. be smart, wise, intelligent, enlightened, and be civilized and educated always. take care of ourself! be different yet be aware of our identity as well, nothing wrong with doing multi-tasking either, you know. encourage one another to be educated, brave or courageous. just be smart about it, ok! and be independent minded helps too, really!

When I first read the story, I scratched my head.
If she went through and remembers what went on in Khmer Rouge, she's got to be around 45 yrs., at least.
My old lady is around 45 yrs old and she doesn't even look close to Miss Phanith Rama Sovann But then the article stated she's attending UCLA which means she's younger than 26 yrs. old.
Any way, good luck in your competition in 2013, Miss Phanith Rama Sovann!!!!
