China has appointed military officers at a newly-established garrison in the South China Sea, state media reported Friday, the country's latest step to bolster claims to disputed islands in the area.

The defence ministry announced the appointments Thursday, the China Daily said, two days after China said it had established the city of Sansha on an island in the disputed Paracel chain, along with the military garrison.

China's neighbours reacted furiously to the move with Vietnam, which also claims the Paracel Islands, filing a formal protest and saying it "violates international law".

Manila, which is involved in a dispute over another archipelago, the Spratly Islands, summoned the Chinese ambassador to lodge a complaint against the garrison announcement.

Sparsely populated Sansha is China's smallest city in terms of population and land size. China reckons, however, that it's the biggest when total area is factored in given the wide swathe of the South China Sea it is meant to oversee.

State media have carried photos of a large domed and pillared building that serves as the city's administrative centre on the island of Yongxing, as well as images of a police station, a bank, a telecom office and residents relaxing outside humble wooden dwellings.

The three-floor building that state media said came into use on July 20 appears by far to be the biggest structure on the small island, which from photos appears largely covered in thick, green vegetation, including palm trees.

While Chinese media accounts of Yongxing's population vary, it appears to be not much bigger than 1,000 people.

Defence ministry spokesman Yang Yujun said the new garrison was responsible for guarding the city and disaster relief, among other functions, according to China Daily.

However, he added that a separate maritime garrison under the Chinese navy was responsible for maritime defence and military combat, appearing to suggest that the Sansha garrison would not have such responsibilities.

China says it owns much of the South China Sea, though Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Brunei and Malaysia each claim portions of it.

The dispute has simmered for decades, though tensions have risen markedly recently as China has moved to more strongly assert its territorial claims.

The Association of Southeast Nations (ASEAN) at a summit earlier this month failed for the first time in 45 years to issue a joint statement, as members were unable to agree how to refer to China's behaviour in the disputed waters.

China says it is acting within its rights, though its moves have raised alarm bells in the region and beyond.

Beijing is also involved in a separate dispute with Japan over islands in the East China Sea.

China is seen as unlikely to alter its stance, despite growing international criticism.

Do you even use your brain a little bit. First I am not Chinese. I am Khmer.
Laos and China never had any war , imagine 3 miions Laotian fighting 1.25 billions Chinese " ARE YOU KIDDING OR CRAZY?!!!!" Lol. Laos was already in firmed grip of the Hanoi government, unlike Cambodia Vietnsmes had some influences because Hun Sen got his power from Viets forces.

Now, in 1978 China and Vietnam had a border war. For these main reasons:

1. During Vietnam war both Russian and Chinese backed the Viet Cong, NVA.
Soviets supply NVA with some military advisers and heavy weapons and aircrafts. China supply NVA with a lot of man powers and most light weapons and ammunitions. After Vietnam war the Viets betrayed China by siding with USSR and not pay back China money, so this angry PRC.

2. In the 70s Viets abused Chinese living in Vietnam, so thousand Chinese migrated back to China.

3. Vietnam invade Kampuchea which is China closes all.

4. Chinese government made a very devastating strategic plunder by announcing before the invasion of Vietnam by stating " WE ARE GOING TO ATTACK VIETNAM AS A PUNISHMENTS FOR ABUSING OUR CHINESE PEOPLES AND ATTACK KAMPUCHEA" This itself already tell the Viets that the Chinese attack ONLY temporary, so the Viets just maintained their best unites in Kampuchea. The Chinese will leave after a short term attack. So you can see that the Chinese were not fully committed to take Vietnam with their full strengths. Chinese troops left Viets land after a brief war , they left in their own NOT BY VIETS COUNTER ATTACK. The Viets just claimed A FAKE VICTORY AFTER THE CHINESE LEFT FOR ACCOMPLISHED PUNISHED VIETNAM. This time the Chinese WILL NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKES.

According to every western military analysts and historians, Vietnam won the 1979 war. One does not need to be a military genius to reach that conclusion. Let me sum it up this way. Because China is much larger than Vietnam, it does have the ability to launch an invasion, but possessing the ability to attack a country does not equate to winning the war. Despite having a landmass and a population of 10-15x that of Vietnam, China lost more men in 20 days than the US lost in both Afghanistan and Iraq wars in 10 years, do the math. The end result of 1979 war was that Vietnam dominated both Cambodia and Laos political and military environments. The fact that Vietnam singlehandedly toppled the Khmer Rouge (China’s ally) and evicted China from Cambodia, the fact that Laos, a country that shares borders with both Vietnam and China, yet it was and still is Vietnam that dominated Laos speaks volume of Vietnam’s ability to defend its country but also its ability to project power in neighboring countries at the expense of China, it also demonstrated China’s inability to defend its ally and more importantly China’s inability to project power. China is a clumsy and pathetic giant. Before relying on China to defend Cambodia from Vietnam, one only needs to look at historical facts. History shows that China has never been able to save Cambodia from Vietnam. Cambodia should have been eliminated long ago. It was only the arrival of the French that Cambodia was saved from being relegated to a mere footnote of history.
