Dear Dr Peang-Meth,
I am responding to your article, Cambodia: Respect ideals and concepts, published by the Asian Human Rights Commission.
I cannot imagine why a normally-respected body such as the AHRC should have chosen to publish your rambling, pretentious, largely irrelevant and clearly politically-motivated article.
I also find it difficult to take seriously someone like yourself who once had such strong associations with Cambodia and yet has chosen not to engage himself in the country's democratic process but to snap rudely from the sidelines, from a position of comfortable exile in the United States.
It is rather ironic that you should choose to quote the words of the Lord Buddha saying: "Do not depend on others. No-one saves us but ourselves. We ourselves must walk the path." This from somebody who deserted his countrymen long ago; first to lecture at the University of Guam and now posing as a serious political analyst producing attention-seeking articles for those misguided enough to want to publish them.
The AHRC has also done itself no credit; publishing your latest article and yet at the same time cravenly protesting that it does not necessarily share your views. In which case, one has to ask: why has it provided you with a high-profile platform and the attendant publicity? The AHRC is not a magazine or newspaper seeking to present its public with the widest possible cross-section of views. It is a regional non-governmental organisation with its own very narrow perspective and agenda - which your views seem to admirably compliment.
One can only hope that you will stop writing such virulent criticisms of the democratically-elected government of Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen and those organisations such as the Asian Human Rights Commission will stop pandering to you.
In the interests of balance I will be asking the AHRC to post this letter within the "Views & Opinions" section of its website.

This situation is contradictory with the great potential of the country, especially in terms of archaeological, natural, agricultural and human resources.
The causes of this situation are obviously linked to the dictatorship, which is perpetrated by Hun Sen and his political party, CPP, for more than 30 years now. They hold absolute power with their tight control all over the institutions of the country, especially Justice and Army which are used for political purposes to eradicate Democracy for which all Cambodians have aspirations.
Their methods are well known: political assassination, usage of the justice system to intimidate and oppress people, hijacking of election process for the advantages of CPP, systemic corruption and so on.
The consequences of this dictatorship are the accumulation of power in the hands of a small group of leaders and their clan with a high concentration of economic and financial assets, which is self-sustained by the systemic corruption. All of this practice is perpetuated to the detriment of the whole population, who become poor and don’t have any future because all Cambodia’s resources are decreasing due to the plundering for political and personal purposes.
With this dictatorship, Cambodia and Cambodian population become economically weak as its resources are decreasing. The economic and political weakness and the overwhelming poverty of the population will reduce the position of Cambodia while the economic and territorial hegemony of the neighboring countries is growing continually.

Comment expliquer cette situation alors que le pays possède d'énormes potentiels, notamment en terme de richesses archéologiques, naturelles, agricoles, et bien sûr humaines.
Les causes en sont bien connues, et elles se résument en un mot: la Dictature. Celle-ci est personnalisée par Hun Sen et son parti le PPC depuis maintenant une trentaine d'années. Ils se maintiennent au pouvoir grâce à une emprise totale sur tous les organes de l'état, notamment la justice et l'armée, qu'ils utilisent pour assassiner la Démocratie à laquelle les Cambodgiens aspirent tant.
Leurs méthodes sont bien connues: assassinats d'opposants, détournement du système judiciaire pour soumettre le peuple, détournement du processus électoral aux profits du PPC, la corruption érigée en institution, etc...
Les conséquences de cette dictature sont également bien connues: l'accumulation des pouvoirs aux mains d'une poignée s'accompagne d'une accumulation des richesses par cette même poignée et de son clan grâce à une corruption généralisée. Tout ceci, aux détriments de la population générale qui se paupérise et qui ne voit aucune perspective d'avenir, car les ressources du Cambodge s’amenuisent également.
Sous une telle Dictature, le Cambodge, donc sa population, devient de plus en plus fragile économiquement à mesure que ses potentiels s'amenuisent et les questions économique et politique finissent par se transformer en question existentielle, comme cela est déjà le cas, avec l'hégémonie économique et territoriale des voisins immédiats.

i think constructive criticism is one thing; however, i don't know about bias, prejudice, hate, discrimination, evil, selfish, etc based on personal problem with cambodia or those who represent cambodia. stop bashing cambodia for a change, ok. there are more to cambodia than just your critic. it is easier to critic than do something about it to change, reform, make it better, etc... most people don't mind when it comes to contructive criticism of cambodia, but the bashing part is so unethical and unprofessional, if you ask me, really. that's stupidity, ignorant, hate, discrimination, bias, prejudice, jealousy, mentally sick and uncalled for, really. wake up, people and stop being stupid and ignorant and primitive and outdated in your thinking about cambodia forever, ok. it's not about you, it's about cambodia, so help promote cambodia and khmerness, really. leave your personal issues out of it, ok.
