Champa is gone by Viet. But Cham are still Cham. They cannot Viet. Khmer in Viet ( Kampuchea Krom ) are Khmers too. They cannot be Viet. That is the answer.

people khmer surin and khmer krom people will always be khmer people. don't let political geography scare you from being khmer people, ok. if youn and siem abuse your rights, etc, then you should declare your independence from both youn and siem, really! always fight for khmer surin rights and khmer krom rights. never let siem and youn take away your human rights to be who your are, your origin, etc, ok! and always learn khmer language because you are khmer, never forget your khmer language, even though youn and siem may be your second language, ok! nothing wrong with speaking many many languages if you can, ok! that's all!

Khmers adopted foreign religion Buddhism in 13th century not 12th. It is about 600 to 700 years.

From what I understood, Buddha teaches Dharma for people who want to end the sufferings (no more rebirth), to go to Nirvana and never return. One may be blessed if he or she follows Dharma properly.
We don't see any blessing for all the prayers the Khmers have been praying and cursing for. Yeah billion people who don't believe Buddha, but why do they live in powerful nations showered with wealth? And we Khmers run to live under their umbrella?
I only hope people can find their own Faith to satisfy their freedom of choose, not blindly submit to the tyrants, such as yourself.

You get to understand, Khmer people are being FED UP with these endlessly sufferings. They may go back and dug up their roots and they studied about their ancient great empire, and compare with recent event, so they made their conclusion based on the events.
Jayavaraman vii did a reform, he eliminated Hinduism then elevated only Buddhism as a state religion that showed a decline of Angkor after 13th century.
The Civilization of Angkor ended from him, and Cambodia continued to decline until today. Who do you think the public should blame? The Buddhism is in power, so go figure.
From 13th century until this 21th century is about 700 years not 800 years. The Khmer Kingdom now lost to the hand of Vietnamese which we cannot deny it.
You may be able to shed some light and tell the angry mobs why do you think Buddhism did not destroy the empire instead of cursing them.

True that every body from poor countries in Asia and Africa run to live in the rich Christian countries for a better life. Some of our parents have to work so hard to pay the bills but compare to our poor country, we live better, some collect retired money and never worked at all, those are leeched cannot denied.
My ancestors were Hindu Kings who built the empire, built Angkor Wat.
PLK pray your Buddha to bless your self, we (my kind) renew our ancient legacy of our Hindu ancestors who once were great. Take your Buddhism (destroyers) out of our town.
