In an interview with Khmerican, the second-ever Cambodian-American councilor in Lowell, Massachusetts, discusses why it's important for minorities to gain citizenship, the risks of deportation, the power of active communities, and how a seven-year struggle to turn on a light at a park inspired him to enter politics.
The city councilor survived the Khmer Rouge and lived in the Khao-I-Dang refugee camp before immigrating to Lowell, which just created a district called Cambodiatown. He says elders now feel at home.
