UN rights envoy Surya Subedi’s next week-long mission to Cambodia will begin on May 19, according to a UN official.
“Professor Subedi has indicated he will focus on follow-up to recommendations made in his previous reports, as well as on discussions with the Royal Government, civil society and others on promot-ing respect for human rights in Cambodia,” James Heenan, officer-in-charge of the UN’s Office of the High Commiss-ioner for Human Rights, said.
In his last reports, the special rapporteur urged serious electoral reforms and an over-haul of the land-concessions process, warning that current policies would eventually erode the nation’s stability.
Prime Minister Hun Sen had called these recommendations unfounded and implied they were of little value, saying they relied too heavily on information from NGOs
and the opposition.
