Golden memories ... សុវណ្ណអនុស្សារ

orn euy srey orn - s. sisamouth + r. sereysothea

BN: No accolade in words is quite good enough for this classic movie. I saw only a few Khmer movies, but of these, 'On Euy Srey On' is the most outstanding and most memorable [for me] in pre-war Khmer cinema making. Every scene ebbs and flows so naturally; every facet of the movie - the acting, the storyline, the camera work, the background music as well as the songs scheme and weave the tension, the poignancy, the hope and anguish of the characters into a masterpiece of story-telling, creating a flawless tapestry of moving visual art. If you happen to view this movie again watch out for the acting of the little boy at the beginning where he is desperately trying to organise a meal for the family without rice supply in the house. Finally, if anyone thinks that School of Vice is susceptible to lapses in concentration or to occasional absent-mindedness, just watch the scene in this clip! 12 out of 10!

Dear School of Vice,

Now I'm curious. I thought you don't know how to read Khmer. How would you understand the meaning of Khmer poem you post above these songs ;)

Just curious. And when I'm curious I have to ask; I don't want to keep anything in my head ;)

~Curious Fan in School of Vice classroom, who does not like to read or listen to the instructor ;)

Dear School of Vice,

The cute little boy in this movie is Ms. Virak Dara's son in real life. I love this movie a lot. This scene is very entertaining and funny ;)

School of Vice,

We want to know
Do you , can YOU read Khmer ?
Please Yes or No !
Thank you

So sorry, School of Vice. I guess Jendhamuni, your alien fan talked too much ;)

Keep it up, 2:31 AM, he is going to auto-edit blowing you away from his posts.

Yeah, he is entitled to his being a bit testy from time to time.

Dear 2:37 AM,

I'm just playing with School of Vice about Khmer literature. School of Vice is very humble, kind and compassionate; too kind to blow me a way from any posts ;)

School of Vice is an elderly, sometimes readers' comments got removed due to elderly issue ;)

Anonymous said...

Wait just a minute there 2:54 AM,

Elderly, according to Collins dictionary, means: quite old, past middle age. So we should call him/her "Nak Ming/Loke Omm" or "loke Ta/Loke Yeay" like Yeay Tep? I think you are in a deeper trouble now 2:54 AM.

2:54 AM keeps shooting herself in the foot now. Why not quit while she is still ahead or is it behind?

Jendhamuni said...

Dear 3:06 AM,

According to American jornalism, elderly is much much worse than you had described above. So, I am aware that I'm deeply in trouble ;)

School of Vice might lecture me for 50 years on this matter ;)

Okay then, I'd better quit now while I am still ahead...lolz!!! Portez-vous bien!

Gros bisous à vous deux!!!
Bon weekend!

It does not take much to convince me that Mr. School of Vice does have a good taste for Cambodian song and movie. "Orn euy srey Orn" is, in my view, a very good movie. The small boy in the movie is quite a talented actor in his own right! Watching this movie clip brings back quite a few good souvenirs of the old days.

Having said all of that, Mr. School of Vice, I would sincerely say that I owe you a large bowl of Phnom Penh noodles with the crispy long Chinese doughnuts freshly removed from the cooking wok and Phnom Penh ice coffee to go along for all the good songs and movie clips you have posted on KI site. Ms. Jendhamuni can come along too if she so wishes and has a crave for PP noodles.

Well, good PP noodles can only be found and eaten in Phnom Penh so hopefully one day in the future (near future, of course!), We shall be able to meet each other in Phnom Penh of Cambodia without Hun Sen.

Rest assured, my dear friend, Mr. School of Vice, it will be an honor for me to pay for your treat. By the way, Ms. Jendha, if you choose to come along, You are truly welcome and if I pay for Mr. School of Vice's food, I will pay for yours as well; after all, it would not be fair to fail to mention that you have also done a fantastic job on KI site!

Enjoy your week-end!

More than Pissed off (MTPO) is coming to rescue Jendha now? hehe! I like, I like!!!

P.s. I prefer Belgium waffle to the "Thai San noodle" because of the msg and stuff Mr. 'Pissed off'. Can I join you guys?

Jendhamuni said...

Dear Pissed Off,

So kind of you! Noodle is what I need badly. As long as no sentient beings in my noodle bowl, I'm more than happy. Just noodle and hot water with lots and lots of spicy stuff is perfect. I am not picky at all with food. I don't need any spicy catfish stuff of someone here ;)

Also, I don't mind coming with you, as long as you can convince School of Vice not to lecture me. I don't like to read or listen to lecture, but 'Golden Memories' I'm dying for ;)

Have I told you that you are the best, Pissed Off? Well, I just did!

Enjoy the rest of the weekend,
~Jendhamuni

MTPO at 4:09 AM,

Of course Mr. MTPO, you are certainly welcome to join us!

I am glad you asked!

What about the part that showed Teav peeking from inside her room through the curtain to look at Tum "smote" or chanting? It went like "eut eum dok koh chomha moat, chong chenh prakod tae min hean...pruos Teav chea srey taeng khmass ean..."

hehehe, Belgium waffle....

VPO (very pissed-off, formerly known as FP)

Anonymous said...

Not that many Khmer people eat Belgium waffle like I do. Can you identify yourself besides just being formely known as FP please, 6:46AM? And why are you nicknaming yourself VPO (very pissed off)? Furthermore no one in the right mind would eat catfish for breakfast as they eat noodle (Kuy Teav?)like somebody in here.

Until then, take care!
Kal

Like somebody in here has mentioned, I should say******
Thanks.
Kal

Jendhamuni said...

Kal,

LOL!

Anonymous said...

Kal,

It is just the light and silly side I took for the weekend, trying to one- up Mr. Pissed Off.

FP is just the extreme and more mischievous version of VPO - it is Fukien Paiissatah. :)

And, I agree Belgian waffles are so much better than salty fish with rice pooridge for breakfast!

Karl [Kalonh] Chuck said...

Much obliged 7:22 AM for taking the time to entertain my question. Along with the new word Fukien Paiissatah, I like to thank you also for having tacitly corrected my misspelling of the word Belgian [not belgium] waffle. Whether Mr. Piss off wanted me or not, I'll be there to collect my bet when and if and anywhere that rendez-vouz will take place. Thx again. Take care.

Kal

Karl [Kalonh] Chuck said...

Hey Jen,
Are you LOL(ing) with me or at me? LOL!!! Take care.

Jendhamuni said...

Kal, yes I am LOL (ing) at you because you picked on my 'catfish' subject ;)

Not my fault, because School of Vice seems to be so attached to spicy catfish. Who knows, he might have catfish for breakfast instead of noodle? Only he, himself knows ;))))

You all are cool people, Jen, SOV, Kal and PO. Thanks for creating or maintaining a space for many of us to come and act out seriously, or humorously behind the screens and keyboards.

Jendhamuni said...

Dear 7:59 AM,

MTPO is also cool! I'm not about me. School of Vice might ban me soon for being called 'Elderly' ;) MTPO please do not go anywhere, I need protection ;)))

Anonymous said...

And you all deliberately excluding me "Yeay Tep" to join you (although in spirit) for the lovely meal ?

Dear oh dear !!!! Is it because I'm too old as you might consider me as an elderly, and not fun to hang around with?
Don't you consider that the elder usually take the bill?

FYI, I am forever young at heart, age is not an object.
Have fun anyway with or without me !!!

Dear Yeay Tep,

Looks like all of us, not just Jendhamuni is deeply in trouble. Not my fault, it's Pissed Off's fault :))))

School of Vice said...

Dear Yeay Tep,

Buddha bless one such as yourself for being so wise and thoughtful!!

However, I wouldn't be too disappointed or be hurt by this apparent slight and exclusion if I were you!

Just imagine sharing the meal table with these invitees: one is a fanatical vegan with attitude problem towards spiced catfish, and who mostly doesn't need to sleep at night!; another is controlled by aliens or possibly an alien himself who asks for Belgium waffles for breakfast in Phnom Penh!!; and on top of all that, as you pointed out, they discriminate against the "elderly"!!!

If my premonition is justified [and it usually is] you, me and Pissed Off, who will be organising and paying for the meals won't be allowed to quietly enjoy our breakfast!! Unless of course, the dining table is extremely large and the three of us are sat at one end in diametric opposite to the other three 'aliens' [or suspected aliens!] at the far end of the same table!!!

Now you know why I haven't confirmed my acceptance of the invitation despite it being well meant...

In good faith,

So so very 'elderly' [almost expired...hmmmm...] School of Vice...

Anonymous said...

Yeay Tep and Kal,

Of course, both of you are always welcome to join us in Phnom Penh! In fact, it is even an honor for our group to have you come along. Our planned breakfast will be wonderful with your presence for sure.

Now I have said willingly the word “our“ to include Mr. School of Vice even though he, with unfounded concerns, has not yet accepted the invitation. Jendha will hunt him down all across the world and bring him in one piece to Phnom Penh to preside over the special breakfast; I do not think we should give Mr. School of Vice a choice, do you? He has done a lot for KI site and for that reason for us! What do you say to that Mr. School of Vice?

As for the three aliens, there is no problem in controlling them so any concerns about their presence is groundless. We can order Kuy Teav Phnom Penh with no meat in it for Jenha; MTPO and Kal can bring their own Belgium waffles to Phnom Penh or they can try our Khmer Waffles in rectangle shape always freshly baked which I truly enjoyed very much when I was much younger.

Well, Mr. School of Vice, if I were you, I would seriously consider the invitation since being an elderly, you have no way of outrunning Jendha!

Will see you all in Phnom Penh one day!

Dear Pissed Off,

Your response is way too cool for me! So unexpected from Mr. Pissed Off! I thought you are only too good with politic, but I was soooo wrong! I love it a lot! Don't worry, School of Vice. I spend most of my time, since after high school, taking care of old Buddhist nuns and elderly, so I do know how to take really good care of elderly ;))))

I will run back to my closet if this zone is not safe for me :)))

I forgot to mention that Phnom Penh Lort Chaa is also my favorite food.

Thanks to Mr. School of Vice for having posted the video. Again lots of souvenirs come back when seeing it being made on a hot flat frying pan!

Having not much money when I was young, after running around Psar Silep playing Cambodian “Cowboys and Indians“ with my good buddies, all of whom had tragically perished under the KR regime except one, I ordered a small plate of Lort Chaa with no egg on it as with on egg, it would cost me 3 riels back then and I only had 2 riels the most as my allowance for morning breakfast.

Now a bowl of PP Kuy Teav usually cost then 5 riels if my memory serves me well so you can see that Lort Chaa would be an ideal choice for me. I love it so much that I learnt how to make it in the refugee camp and I consider myself to be one hell of a cook as far as making Lort Chaa is concerned! Lort Chaa in the old days only had eggs as a luxurious addition and no beef.

So Jendha, you can opt for Lort Chaa instead if you want to!

Now I will make Lort Chaa tomorrow.

Dear Pissed Off,

I have a lot of souvenirs with Lort Chaa also when I was a little girl. I bought it off the street [on cart] every day with my baby sister in Kao I Dang. I love it hot and fresh with bean sprout sooo much! I am soooo hungry!!! And yes, I love Lort Chaa a lot more than noodle!!!
