A dance school that has helped to revive the traditional Khmer dance of apsara is marking its 10th anniversary. Amrita Performing Arts’ is celebrating a decade of nurturing both traditional Cambodian dance and modern choreography this month.
Launched by Fred Frumberg in 2003, Amrita today has a company of 15
artists who work alongside international choreographers to create new
works of dance and theatre. To mark the major milestone, an exhibition
is taking place at Java Café showing images of highlights from the
organisation’s journey.
On Friday, Sept. 13, Java Cafe will host a birthday bash where
artists and collaborators who have shared the journey will be on hand to
talk about their experiences. There will be a series of short
performances specially choreographed for the occasion.
This year has been jam-packed with exciting events for Amrita,
including in April when they organised for 130 artists to travel to New
York to take part in the Season of Cambodia, which is part of the
festival of Cambodian Arts. They went on to collaborate with KIKE
Hiroshi Bridge Project to create compelling dance piece, Mahabharata.
Later on this year, Amrita’s piece, Khmeropedies III by Emmanuèle
Phuon, will travel to Singapore to perform at the Esplanade theatre
within the Singapore Dans Festival. They will also present a new solo
by Peter Chin at the World Dance Alliance in Taiwan.
