Cambodia, Japan vow to further strengthen bilateral, regional cooperation

PHNOM PENH, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and visiting Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Saturday pledged to further enhance bilateral cooperation in some key areas for the mutual benefits of the two countries and peoples,according to a joint statement.

The two premiers agreed to further cooperate in the fields of politics and security, democracy and rule of law, economics, development and culture, said the statement released after a one- hour meeting at the Peace Palace. "The two leaders decided to further enhance dialogue on political and security issues, using existing fora such as the politico-military dialogue,"it said."They also decided to advance further cooperation between the defense authorities of both countries including through capacity building assistance."

On regional and international issues, the two leaders decided to promote further cooperation toward regional and global peace and prosperity.

They underscored the importance of settling maritime disputes by peaceful means in accordance with universally recognized principles of international law in order to establish the principle of the rule of law in the Asia-Pacific region while expressing expectation on an early conclusion of an effective Code of Conduct (COC) which contributes to the effective settlement of conflicts in the South China Sea.

Both sides also urged the Democratic People Republic of Korea ( DPRK) to fully comply with its obligations under the relevant United Nations Security Council Resolutions and commitments under the Sept. 19, 2005 Joint Statement of the Six Party Talks, and to take concrete actions for its denuclearization.

Speaking at a joint press briefing after the meeting, Hun Sen said the meeting was fruitful and covered almost all fields of bilateral relations as well as regional and international issues. "We had raised many measures together to further strengthen this relationship, he said.

Abe said he was very satisfied with the relations and cooperation between Japan and Cambodia and vowed to further develop the ties for the benefits of the two countries and peoples. "Japan will not only continue providing official development aid to Cambodia, it will also encourage more Japanese companies to come to Cambodia,"he said.

Meanwhile, two documents concerning training Cambodian peacekeepers for the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations and cooperation in the health sector were signed by the two premiers.

Abe arrived here Saturday for a one-day official visit to further promote Japan-Cambodia ties and cooperation. The trip will take him Laos on Sunday.
