Tourism Minister calls on peaceful protests at tourism sites

Tourism Minister Thong Khon
The Cambodia Herald, November 26, 2013

PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- Tourism Minister Thong Khon on Tuesday called on all citizens, who plan to participate in the Cambodia National Rescue Party's (CNRP) rallies in December, to maintain order and avoid chaos and violence, which could cause trouble for the country’s tourism areas.

His comments came after the opposition CNRP announced that it plans to gather supporters in December for several events throughout the country.

"The protests should be held in accordance with law and follow what authorities and the government has granted," he said in a workshop at the Le Royal Hotel in Phnom Penh.

"All countries have protests, however they should not turn violent," he said.

Protests that follow the permitted criteria is the basis of a real democracy, and in turn will not cause trouble to main tourism areas.

“If we implement the rule of law and democracy, there will be no violence,” Khon said, adding that authorities will follow the law and any violation of the law will not be accepted.
According to a statement issued Monday, the CNRP will gather supporters on December 10th to mark International Human Rights Day in Siem Reap province and continue on to visit Preah Vihear temple the following day.

On December 12th, CNRP senior officials will visit Prey Long forest in Kampong Thom province and will return to Phnom Penh to hold a rally at Democratic Park on December 15th, the statement said.

From December 15th onwards, the CNRP will hold a mass rally every Sunday, the statement added.

there ought to be a system or a proper, designated place for citizens of cambodia with discontent to protest and demonstration peacefully, using non-violence. authority should education the protesters not to protest irradically everywhere, disrupting public peace, blocking traffic, etc...

for your information, cambodia do allow unhappy people to protest, but authority has to make sure it's non-violence because not everybody who protests or not is violent! cambodia wants to show the world community that its citizens can have the rights to protest without using violence to achieve that purpose!

everyone needs to be educated to obey the rule of law and act orderly.

not all protest use violent mean. be smart and wise about it. if they want gov't to hear their concern, they should do it vigilantly and non-violient! that's all!

in order to help facilitate more tourists coming to and fro cambodia, i think cambodia ought to look into getting technical assistance to build larger airports with runway of 4000meters length x 60meters width. yes, start building them in kompong chhnang airport, phnom penh international, siem reap/angkor international and sihanoukvile international. don't wait any longer, build them now! cambodia's airports are still very small compare to regional airports! wake up, cambodia!
