Shukaku is owned by ruling- party senator Lao Meng Khin. The Chinese firm Erdos Hong Jun Investment Company has a 51 percent stake in the project.

 Residents of Boeung Kak’s village 22 yesterday morning prayed for retribution on the government officials they accuse of having corrupt ties to a company that used excavators and police to demolish their homes and businesses on Friday, during a brutal incident that was videotaped and uploaded onto YouTube.

Standing in the rubble where his home stood before Friday, Doung Kea, 43, told the Post that he was praying for spirits to punish corrupt officials who conspired to destroy his house and those of his neighbours. “It is the time of the Pchum Ben festival, so our prayers for action against corrupt officials will be effective,” he said.

Friday’s destruction began early in the afternoon when two excavators moved into the village, accompanied by about 100 district and riot police. Eight houses and shops were demolished as horrified onlookers cried, shouted or tossed stones at them.

A group of lakeside residents gathered at a shrine on the bank of the Tonle Sap river on Tuesday to pray to a spirit to save their homes, as they appeared to be running out of options.

The residents burned incense and prayed to a saint called Dang Keur that their homes be spared by an $80 million development deal between a private company and the city of Phnom Penh. Residents refuse to take a buyout from the company that they say is too low.

Meanwhile, the company, Shukaku, Inc., continues to pump fill into Beoung Kak lake, inundating occupied homes as it moves towards building a residential and business district.

Residents say they have lodged complaints with the city and have already protested multiple times in front of City Hall. They will continue to protest, they said.

Phnom Penh – In the afternoon of 09 Nov. 2010, about 20 representatives of the residents living in 7 villages encompassing more than 2,000 families have gathered at Preah Ang Dorn Keur (in front of the Royal Palace) to held a religious ceremony in which they burnt incense to put a curse on the [Shukaku] company which grabbed their land. The ceremony was held after the residents lost all hope with the government.

42-year old Kong Chantha who represents Boeung Kak residents told reporters at the ceremonial place that: “We have no more choice because our protest did not bring any result at all. Only the deity [can help us]. We are Khmer, only Buddhism can soften the greedy heart [of the company’s owner] and make them become indulgent to the residents. Right now, we have no other choice, we call on heaven and heaven does not hear us, we appeal to the earth, but the earth does not reply to us. So we only have this choice left.” She added that only the deity at Preah Ang Dorng Keur is efficient and he will make Samdach PM Hun Xen see the hardship of the people. May the deity make him come to visit the people whose houses have been buried deep in sand. We have nowhere to live now.”

Mrs. Ly Mom, a resident of Boeung Kak, said that the people believe Preah Ang Dorng Keur, especially the residents of Boeung Kak have 100% confidence that the deity will help them, because this is the most efficient deity in Cambodia. The residents promised to the deity that, should they be allowed to remain without being evicted, they will hold a yearly ceremony for the deity once the residents can live in peace.

During the religious ceremony, the residents prayed the deity to destroy the company which grabbed their lands, to take away the greed from this land-grabbing company, to make the company stop pumping sand, to make the company return to the negotiation table and provide market value compensation to the residents. The villagers plan to hold a demonstration against the land-grabbing company in the near future also.

Residents of the Boeung Kak area have decided to organize a ceremony to put a curse on the Shukaku Co. [owned by CPP-Tycoon-Senator and Hun Sen’s crony Lao Meng Khin] which is currently funding the development of the Boeung Kak region in Phnom Penh city. The residents prayed that this company suffers total destruction.

The prayer for the curse on the Shukaku Co. was organized in the evening of Friday 12 June, and starting at 6PM on that day, all the residents burnt incense in their homes, while others gathered to pray at Village No. 6 of Boeung Kak area to put the curse on this company.

Be Pharom, a resident, said that because the residents no longer trust all levels of government authority to help them solve their hardship, they decided to organize this ceremony to put the curse on the Shukaku Co,: “May Lord Budda help us. Let the spirits guarding this land and water, let the spirit of Boeung Kak Lake, the angels, Indra, Brahma kill those who hurt us with lightning strike.”

The residents added that a few hours after they organized the cursing ceremony, plainclothes government agents, some of whom were armed, came to threaten the residents who dare organize this ceremony.

These agents also confiscated a cane juice container belonging to one of the residents, and they accused her of storing this container on the Shukaku Co. land.

Mom Phal, the owner of the juice container, said: “They used guns to threaten me, but I was not scared. I said shoot me, I am not scared. Even if I die, I still have many relatives left.”

On that same day, RFA reporters crossed the Shukaku Company’s fence to try to obtain information about the accusations made above, however, company agents and police officers in uniform came out to prevent us from asking any questions.

RFA attempted to call officials at the Srah Chork commune office, and officials of the Daun Penh district office, to obtain clarifications on this altercation, but they could not be reached.

Nevertheless, Sa Roeun, chief of Village No. 4 in Boeung Kak Lake area, confirmed that the Shukaku Co. indeed confiscated the cane juice container belonging to the resident, but, he does not have the rights and the duty to resolve this issue.

For the development of the 133-hectare area in Beoung Kak, the Cambodian government gave out a 99-year lease of the lake to the private Shukaku Co. Some of the residents disagreed to this lease and they have held several protests on this issue.
