Villain or victim? Protesters divided over activist pre-trial detention

A fake motodoop protest?

One man, who asked not to be named, said he had been forced to participate – or risk losing his turf.

“If I did not join, I would not be allowed to park and pick up customers from near a market,” he said. “So I had no choice but to join.”
Imprisoned Yorm Bopha has either been unjustly targeted for her role in Boeung Kak lake eviction protests or is responsible for the vicious beating of two motodops, depending on which protesters’ chants were true yesterday.

It was land evictees versus motodops in the capital as two separate protests revealed divided opinion over Bopha’s pre-trial detention in Prey Sar prison since her arrest last week on an intentional violence charge.

Almost 200 motodops, members of the Cambodia for Confederation Development Association, rode from Freedom Park to the Court of Appeal to demand the continued detention of the 29-year-old mother, who along with 65-year-old Borei Keila representative Tim Sakmony, was arrested last week.

Speaking outside the court, CCDA president E Sophors demanded justice for two of his members, who he claimed Bopha beat up at Boeung Kak recently.

Borei Keila protesters, including many who live in squalor under staircases at the site, have already been compensated for losing their homes and have no right to demand more, Suy Sophan, the owner of developer Phan Imex, told the Post yesterday.

About 200 supporters from the Borei Keila and Boeung Kak lake communities gathered yesterday, praying at a pagoda nearby Prey Sar prison for the release of the representatives.

Boeung Kak lake’s Yorm Bopha and Tim Sakmony from Borei Keila were arrested in separate incidents last week.

PHNOM PENH - Phnom Penh Municipal Court is holding two more land protesters, following the detention of one woman on Tuesday.

The two activists, from the Borei Keila neighborhood, were detained after they appeared for questioning at the court Wednesday.

Am Sam Ath, lead investigator for the rights group Licadho, said the courts detained Tim Sak Mony, an activist from the neighborhood, and Top Kim Hong, the former village chief of Borei Keila.

Tim Sak Mony is being held for allegedly inciting violence during a protest, and Top Kim Hong is being held on charges related to corruption.

Am Sam Ath said the arrests appeared to be “unfair” and aimed at reducing protests against the development company, Phanimex.

Two months after their release from Prey Sar prison, members of the so-called Boeung Kak 13 were yesterday at the forefront of more calls for authorities to mark out land promised to their community.

About 50 Boeung Kak women and children gathered outside Phnom Penh City Hall to urge authorities to demarcate 12.44 hectares of land that Prime Minister Hun Sen pledged to them just over one year ago.

Tep Vanny, one of the 13 women jailed for a month and three days after a three-hour trial on May 24, said she held fears for the future of her community.

“As long as the authority doesn’t demarcate our 12.44 hectares of land, our lives will not be secure,” she said.

Heng Mom, another of the 13 convicted for disputing public officials and occupying state land, said the official correspondence the community had received had created confusion at Boeung Kak.

Boeung Kak Lake protest in front of the Royal Palace on 11 June 2012 - Photos by Jennifer Holligan on Flickr

This morning some 100 Boeung Kak community members and friends gathered at the Royal Palace to submit a petition to the King. A truckload of military police hid under trees in the vicinity, and at least 20 security guards in blue uniforms asked the community to stop creating “public disorder” and leave. Eventually, two community representatives were allowed to enter the Palace and submit their petition. later, the group proceeded to the Ministry of Justice to ask about progress in the case of the 15 jailed activists. The Ministry stated they had not yet received documents related to the appeal of 13 representatives currently serving 2.5 year sentences. (Posted at http://freethe15.wordpress.com)

“I think my mother and all villagers are completely free of guilt” - 13-yr old Heng Sreyleak
Four Boeung Kak women convicted to two-and-a-half years in Prey Sar prison went on a hunger strike yesterday as their husbands and children led a 200-strong rally outside, the husband of imprisoned village representative Tep Vanny told the Post.

Ou Kong Chea said he had received a telephone call from Kong Chantha, one of 15 Boeung Kak villagers in Prey Sar, telling him that his wife and three others began refusing food yesterday morning to protest against their three-hour trial and conviction on March 24.

“She said herself and my wife Tep Vanny, Mrs Chheng Leap and Mrs Song Sreyleap were making a hunger strike in response to us supporting them,” he said.
