Editorial: An extreme comparison that cannot be accepted

Tuesday, 15 November 2011

DAP-New

In this editorial by Chey Dara of DAP-news, a mouthpiece of the CPP, it is reported that Hun Xen, in a fit of rage, warned that he will take legal measures against anyone who compare him to Muammar Gaddafi of Libya because it is a scorn against him and against his life. He also issued his warning to a group of opposition officials who compared him to the Libyan dictator who was arrested by rebels and shot dead. Hun Xen is said to be extremely hurt because of this scorn on his life. Naturally, CPP sycophants who analyzed this case said that such comparison is not correct because Hun Xen was elected every 5 years unlike Gaddafi who was never elected during his 42-years rule.

KI-Media wholeheartedly agree with these sycophants, it is completely wrong to compare our august Strongman to Muammar Gaddafi and a disservice to Gaddafi as well because, for one thing, Hun Xen is nothing but a puny dictator whose wealth, stolen through the sale of Cambodian resources, unlike Gaddafi who was more ambitious than this garden variety Asian dictator. On the other hand, there is only one man who is can be compared to our Samd-ach and that man is no other than our Samd-ach’s distant cousin, Strongman Saddam Hussein.

Indeed, just like our august Samd-ach, Saddam Hussein was successively voted to power one election after another. In fact, during the 2002 election, the last one before he was taken out of power, Saddam Hussein won 100% of vote just to prove how popular he was, just like our august Samd-ach. Therefore, ladies and gentlemen, please stop comparing Samd-ach Muor Mao (grumpy) Hussein to Gaddafi and compare him to Saddam Hussein instead. Where’s the rope? After all, a bullet in the head is too easy for a bloody killer.
Strongman Saddam Hussein is now in heaven!

SRP slams Senate-bid rumours

A Sam Rainsy Party spokesman yesterday dismissed a local media report alleging its 25 MPs would resign to boycott the next parliamentary session, amidst speculation of internal strife within the main opposition party.

A report on pro-government website DAP News said the SRP was aiming to ensure the National Assembly would lack the quorum of MPs necessary to pass legislation.

SRP spokesman Yim Sovann said the report was false and failed to “quote from the ... party spokesman”. “What I say is the official SRP position,” he said.

Why DAP never publish anything about Viet encroachments on Cambodia?

Click on the letter in Khmer to zoom in

Translation from Khmer by Oss Dey

Dear Uncle Soy Sopheap,

I am a Cambodian citizen who always follow up information on DAP’s webpage.

I used to praise DAP which always publish up to the minute news in Cambodia and overseas. Now, I have a question that I would like you, Uncle Soy Sopheap, to explain: Recently, I read information on a number of websites about the planting of Cambodian-Viet border post in Takeo province which was done in violation of the Cambodian territorial integrity, however, there is no reaction whatsoever from the [Cambodian] government. Furthermore, in the past, I observed that when there are protests from opposition MPs or from the people, there are always attack and arrests made by the Cambodian government instead. I am a Cambodian citizen and I am truly hurt. I am certain that you are not different from me or other Cambodians either.

I want to ask you, Uncle:
  1. What do you think about the Cambodian-Viet border problems?
  2. Why DAP website never publish about Vietnamese encroachments on Cambodian territorial integrity? Other websites do publish and follow up on this problem.
  3. Is DAP independent or is it biased?
  4. Why is the Cambodian government not freeing itself up from being a Yuon puppet regime?
  5. When will Cambodia receive justice?
I have dozens of other questions that I need answer for and that I have not listed here…

Foreman for Deum Ampil radio antenna installation fell and died

Wednesday, February 24, 2010
Everyday.com.kh
Translated from Khmer by Socheata

The foreman for the installation of the Deum Ampil radio antenna who climbed up to perform a technical check on a 100-meter-high antenna, was met with tragedy when he slipped and fell down. In his fall, he hit a metallic bar supporting the antenna which severed one of his leg before falling to the ground and died on the spot. The accident in which the body of the victim was badly disfigured took place on 22 February 2010 at 1:40PM, at the Deum Ampil antenna station located in Domnak Ampil village, Prek Kompiss commune, Kandal Steung district, Kandal province. Police officers from Prek Kompiss commune indicated that the foreman was 47-year-old Thai citizen named Niyom Sao Kham. He lived at the station and he is technician for antenna installation. The police said that the body was handed over to Ms. Ung Visay Yani, the Thai-English translator and manager of the Deum Ampil station. Doctors have also collected the man’s severed foot and re-attached to his body which is preserved until his family could collect him.

Please stop embarrassing Cambodia!

Friday, November 06, 2009
KI-Media

In a tit-for-tat diplomatic row between Thailand and Cambodia, several embarrassing moments are taking place among those who are involved in diplomacy:

We will close that closed border

Following Thailand’s threat to seal border between Thailand and Cambodia in retaliation to Hun Xen’s nomination of Thaksin as his personal advisor and government economic advisor, Koy Kuong, spokesman for Cambodia’s ministry of Foreign Affairs, thought that it would be wise to give a tit-for-tat reply back to Thailand. DAP news quoted Koy Kuong as saying: “If Thailand closes its border with Cambodia, Cambodia will also close its border [with Thailand]”. If Thailand closes its border with Cambodia, do we really need to close that closed border also?

Is she there yet?
(or Follow You Ay’s minute-by-minute trek from Bangkok to Phnom Penh)

Somebody at DAP news may think that it is patriotic to announce Mrs. You Ay’s, Cambodia’s ambassador to Thailand, trek from Bangkok to Phnom Penh, following her recall by Sok An. On Thursday 05 November, DAP announced that Mrs. You Ay arrived at the Phnom Penh airport (http://dap-news.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3988:elakrsi-ekgkaractutexmrrbcamtirkugagkk-anmkdlrblanyntehahehiy&catid=1:dap-news&Itemid=75). However, at 2:57PM on Friday 06 November, DAP announced that You Ay arrived at Banteay Meanchey province after crossing the Poipet international border gate (http://dap-news.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4011:elakrsi-yu-gy-efvidmenirmkcitdlexttatdmbgehiy&catid=1:dap-news&Itemid=75). One hour later, DAP issued another post indicating that You Ay arrived in Pursat province (http://dap-news.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4017:elakrsi-yu-gy-mkdlexttebaft-satehiy&catid=1:dap-news&Itemid=75). It appears that, obviously, Mrs. You Ay had to take a road trip to travel from Bangkok to Phnom Penh. Now, couldn’t the Cambodian government afford to pay her one-way plane ticket back? Short of that, couldn’t Mrs. You Ay, the owner of vast amount of lands – some of them grabbed from poor people – in Kampong Speu, afford to buy a plane ticket for herself? Short of that still, could DAP news stop publishing her embarrassing road trip itinerary? ... Maybe, we should shut our mouth also?!?!

In a letter published by Deum Ampil news (DAP) on Friday 30 October, detailing threats received by Soy Sopheap, this news agency claimed:
“Deum Ampil Media center is an independent and neutral institution that serves the interest of the society and the nation in general without political and religious discrimination whatsoever.”
In its 30 October 2009 edition, The Cambodia Daily reported that Ros Sokhet, a freelance journalist, was arrested for questioning by the Ministry of Interior police on Wednesday, following Soy Sopheap’s complaint about anonymous text message threats sent to him. The Cambodia Daily also reported that Soy Sopheap “is well known for his close relationship with the government”.

Furthermore, the Phnom Penh Municipal Court – a court known to be easily swayed by government leaders – put Ros Sokhet on immediate trial on Thursday, just one day after Ros Sokhet’s arrest. The trial had to be adjourned as the accused did not have a lawyer to defend him.

On Friday, DAP also published a communiqué issued by the Club of Cambodian Journalists (CCJ) led by Pen Samithy, the editor of the pro-CPP Rasmei Kampuchea newspaper, regarding the arrest of Ros Sokhet. It is interesting to read the following statements in the CCJ communiqué:
“The Club of Cambodian Journalists will follow up with attention [Ros Sokhet’s case] as an neutral institution that serves the common interest of journalists.

The Club of Cambodian Journalists is an independent organization with the mission of serving the interest and defending journalists, as well as raising press freedom and strengthening the journalism profession in Cambodia”
We couldn't help but noticing the coincidence in some of the wordings used in the two statements above. While it is impossible to tell who, between DAP and the CCJ, issued their statement first, it appears to us that the CCJ statement sounds quite reasonable, and if, by chance, the CCJ statement was issued first, it looks like somebody at DAP news tried more or less parroting the CCJ statement, but with a lesser degree of flair and tact. On the other hand, if DAP issued its statement first, it looks like its claim of "independence and neutrality" was shattered by The Cambodia Daily's observation.

RFA Khmer Service is a mess ... CPP mole like Mayarith could be undermining this US-funded radio station

Dear Readers,

The following letter was posted today by Mr. Serey Ratha Sourn on the Camdisc bulletin board. The letter was allegedly sent by Mayarith, a former RFA reporter who resigned to work for Soy Sopheap's pro-CPP newspaper Deum Ampil News (Tamarind tree News). In his letter, Mayarith was complaining about the nomination of Sam Poly as the deputy-director for RFA Khmer Service. Mayarith is concerned that this nomination will lead to more critical reports by RFA against the Hun Sen's regime. If this letter is proved to be authentic, it appears that Mayarith has been working as a CPP mole from within RFA and thus could be undermining the integrity of this US-funded radio station designed "to provide accurate and timely news and information to Asian countries whose governments prohibit access to a free press."

To: Highly respected Samdach Dek Cho Hun Sen, Prime minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia

I, Mayarith, ask for your highest authorization to report the work at Radio Free Asia (RFA).

The main points related to the RFA work are as follows:

On Friday 26 June 2009, an announcement was made by Mrs. Libby Liu, the administrator for the entire RFA [RFA President], nominating an employee without expertise by the name of Sam Poly (Pseudonym used on radio is Pov Ponlok) as the deputy director for the broadcasting of Radio Free Asia [Khmer Service]. This position was previously occupied by Mr. Sam Borin. Currently, Mr. Sam Borin is only occupying the position of executive director for information, in charge of political affairs and responsible for the RFA’s listeners forum program. This major change allows the opposition group to have more opportunity to use RFA to oppose the government because Mr. Kem Sos, the director of RFA Khmer Service, is not a good leader.

The new nomination brought a surprise to all RFA employees, and some of them are even looking to find ways to leave RFA. Based on my phone conversations with RFA employees both inside and outside the country, I learned that they want to find new positions if work is available. I plan to …. [unreadable sentence]… I am asking Samdach’s advice if there are employees who want to quit. [Unreadable hand written notes, they could be from Hun Sen].

I will return back to the US on Wednesday 01 July 2009, and when I will arrive there, I will turn in my resignation letter from RFA. I plan to return back to Cambodia at the beginning of August. Between July and August, I will prepare a new life for my wife and my two sons (my eldest son is currently studying architecture at university, and the other one is currently studying general education). At this time, I could be facing with some difficulties because I no longer receive my salary from RFA anymore. Nevertheless, I and my wife will seek all available means to organize a comfortable living before my return back to Cambodia by myself. I apologize to Samdach PM because I should not tell you all these issues.

In conclusion, I promise to serve to the nation and I am banking my future on the ideal and virtuous leadership of Samdach and the Chumteav [Bun Rany Hun Xen], [to work] in the information framework with Younger Brother Soy Sopheap until the end and this is my grateful payback to Samdach and the CPP leaders who liberated the country from the Pol Pot regime and who are currently developing the country.

DAP, not to be confused with DPA, Germany’s Deutsche Press Agentur, is the acronym for Daeum Ampil, The Tamarind tree, a new weekly webzine launched by CTN reporter Soy Sopheap, which is entirely in Khmer.

Soy Sopheap, a known Cambodian reporter and mediator during political crisis, tries to diversify press support. The new site www.dap-news.com was launched last week at the same time that the weekly Daeum Ampil print magazine is being changed into a bi-weekly one. Furthermore, Soy Sopheap, the director of the DAP, is also about to launch another magazine, Morokot (The Emerald), which will see its debut on 09 February. All these activities were undertaken to answer the needs of Cambodian readers, Soy Sopheap claimed. “There are issues that I cannot handle on TV, I discuss about them in the newspaper. The website also provides an answer to the current new web era. I treat all subjects, without political bias,” Soy Sopheap explained.

On the DAP site, readers can have access to both national and international news. Regarding Cambodian news, activities and speech given by the opposition parties will also be included. Nevertheless, Soy Sopheap is known to be a close associate of Hun Sen. Even if the government views are surely reported, readers will also learn about the alliance between the SRP and the HRP, and they will also learn about Sam Rainsy’s request to the government in terms of budget for the economic crisis. Soy Sopheap’s visit to Preah Vihear province, the border dispute area with Thailand, is also featured on this website.

Returning to the upcoming Morokot magazine, Soy Sopheap explained that it was one of his 10-year-old dreams that is just materialize now. “I want to create an artist association and a magazine. Now, it is done, the opportunity took place in 2006, and the magazine is being published now,” a gleeful Soy Sopheap said.
