In a public declaration, Prime minister Hun Sen recognized that the breakup of the Funcinpec royalist party was his achievement.
Hun Sen declared that Funcinpec weakening was because, in the past, it attempted to interfere in the CPP internal affair.
Hun Sen said: “Funcinpec, I recognize [that I weakened it], why did I do it? Because Funcinpec was interfering too much in the CPP internal affair. Therefore, in April ’97, I splintered Funcinpec from one group into 11 groups, since then, Funcinpec became weakened. If at that time, it did not interfere in the CPP internal affair, I will not touch Funcinpec. But, now I am confirming that whoever that is, whichever party it is, if they dare interfere with the CPP, then you will not be in peace, I will move in until I reach your last refuge directly.”
Up until now, the division of Fnncinpec led to the pullout of Prince Norodom Ranariddh from political life, and currently, this party only holds two seats at the National Assembly.
More recently, a large number of high-ranking Funcinpec officials defected to join the CPP as well.
Hun Sen’s recall of his strategy to divvy up Funcinpec came at a time when he is issuing warnings to other opposition parties which he suspects of wanting to interfere in the CPP internal affair.
Hun Sen said that, the recent sacking of CPP general Ke Kim Yan from the position of army chief of staff led to criticisms from the opposition parties claiming that the CPP are currently facing internal dispute.
Not only did Hun Sen deny this fact, he also warned the opposition from interfering in the CPP internal affair: “Those who attacked the CPP, do you know how many of them vanished? Whoever used to interfere in the CPP’s internal affair, they will face retaliation. Retaliation means that we will hit you inside your last headquarter, this is self-defense. The CPP is only self-defending itself, we will not interfere in your affair, but, because you like to incite [our CPP people], I will hit inside your headquarter.”
Hun Sen said that even within the opposition parties, he has some of his men hidden in there, and his CPP people are leading an opposition to their party leaders during the period of preparation for the non-universal election to select district, province and municipality leaders for the entire country.
There is no reaction yet from the opposition parties on this issue.
