Prime minister Hun Sen announced on Friday 09 May, the circulation of a new 20,000-riel bill bearing the picture of King Norodom Sihamoni, which will start on 12 May.
This is a “gift” to the son of Norodom Sihanouk – which was decided in common with Chea Chanto, the governor of the National bank of Cambodia – for the occasion of his anniversary which will be celebrated next week.
This bill with the new design, which was submitted to King-father and Queen-Mother, will replace the old 20,000 riels bill (which featured the picture of Norodom Sihanouk) which was judged to be “easily duplicable.”
The older bill will be slowly removed from circulation, Hun Sen indicated while underscoring that Cambodia would not suffer from a riel monetary inflation, and that it was quite the opposite.
Reminding that 700,000 Cambodians currently receive their salary in riels, Hun Sen added that he did everything he could to insure the stability of the riel/dollar currency exchange rate.
